💥 Up, up and away! 💥
The Man of Steel is back on movie screens, and thankfully, this one's not a sourpuss: David Corenswet takes his turn with the cape and tights in James Gunn's "Superman," an exciting intro to the rebooted DC superhero universe. The character has been a pop-culture icon for 80-plus years, so anytime there's a new one, it's a big deal. Also worth watching is "Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires," the latest in Disney's teen musical franchise with rising star Milo Manheim. And speaking of kids, yours might be watching more than usual since it's summer break, so we've got new guides for what and how much to watch.
Now on to the good stuff:
See David Corenswet as the newest Man of Steel in James Gunn's 'Superman'
I talked with a bunch of "Superman" cast members, and while they all say similarly, Rachel Brosnahan says it best about David Corenswet: "He is Superman." I had an in-depth conversation with the latest Man of Steel about bringing "dad energy" to the role as a new father and what qualities he shares with the big blue Boy Scout. "We can be a force for calm and reassurance and centeredness even in the most tumultuous times in life," Corenswet says.
And he's the main reason why "Superman" works so well. Director James Gunn has created a highly enjoyable adventure in a busy universe that feels electric and meaningful. (Peep my ★★★½ review.) Also, as part of our round-the-clock "Superman" coverage, we've got an exclusive look at the Daily Planet, a parent's guide for those with superhero-loving kids, an updated ranking of the top 50 superhero movies, plus a rundown of the best screen Supermen.
Stream Disney's 'Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires' with Milo Manheim
As the father of a tween girl, I was an early adopter of Disney's "Zombies," the 2018 fantasy musical comedy about a football-playing zombie (Milo Manheim) going to a "normal" high school and falling for cheer captain Addison (Meg Donnelly). It was a breezy and fun flick that birthed a loyal fandom, more movies and more monsters (including werewolves and aliens).
For the premiere of "Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires," Manheim stopped by our studio for a photo shoot, plus we chatted about his "weird" career and recent run as Seymour in the off-Broadway revival of "Little Shop of Horrors." Being in the show "fueled everything," he says. "It fueled my drive, my excitement, my passion. It also fueled my fear, for sure, but that's the best part of it."
"Zombies 4" is among several new movies on streaming this week, a list that also includes the thrillers "Opus" and "Drop," plus Tyler Perry's latest "Madea" comedy.
Get a handle on your kids' screen time this summer
Summertime means no school for the youngsters and more hours to watch TV and spend time on various screens and devices. TV critic Kelly Lawler talked with doctors, media experts and television creators, exploring how to navigate screen time, what children should be watching, and the things that you may want them to avoid. She's included a guide to the best TV shows for elementary-age kids, such as "Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man," "SpongeBob SquarePants" and "Percy Jackson and the Olympians."
Kelly doesn't forget the adults, though: She has a guide to all the new TV streaming this week, like the return of Michael C. Hall's fan-favorite serial killer in "Dexter: Resurrection."

Bill Belichick, North Carolina football docuseries coming to Hulu
It appears Bill Belichick's first season with North Carolina football will find its way on TV after all. A docuseries featuring Belichick and the Tar Heels is reportedly coming to Hulu, according to Front Office Sports on Friday, July 18. North Carolina was nearly the team to be featured this offseason on HBO's "Hard Knocks," a show that chronicles one NFL team during training camp each season. The Tar Heels would've been the first college program ever featured on the show, although the plans reportedly fell through just days before the show was set to be announced. REQUIRED READING: Bill Belichick says Jordon Hudson 'doesn't have anything to do' with North Carolina football Multiple reports added Belichick's girlfriend, 24-year-old Jordon Hudson, played an "instrumental role" in HBO moving away from North Carolina for "Hard Knocks," as she requested to be heavily involved in the docuseries. Belichick recently gave his answer on the potential "Hard Knocks" series during a podcast appearance with Ryan Clark on the "Pivot Podcast." 'Hard Knocks is training camp, and we're not training camp. We're just not,' Belichick said. 'That's not what we are. The drama of training camp, who's a cut and all that. Like, we're a season, and they don't want that. Yeah, there are film issues too, but forget about the film issues. Just say you could straighten all those out, Hard Knocks just didn't fit for us.' Belichick, 73, is a six-time Super Bowl champion head coach with the New England Patriots, which he coached from 2000-23. The 2025 season marks his first year coaching in college football, despite being the oldest head coach in Division I FBS. Belichick has been one of the largest subjects of discussion of the college football offseason, from his decision to coach at North Carolina to his relationship with Hudson. A docuseries by Disney-owned Hulu featuring Belichick and the Tar Heels is set to be appointment viewing for numerous college football fans.

James Gunn Reveals Why He Pulled the Plug on a Greenlit DCU Movie - "We Can't Make This Film" — GeekTyrant
James Gunn had to make tough call when it came to a DC movie that was being developed that he was intially excited about. In a recent interview with NPR, the DC Studios co-CEO revealed more details about a previously greenlit DC film that he ultimately scrapped after multiple drafts of the script failed to improve. "We had a movie that was greenlit. We got [the] second draft and [the] third draft, and it just wasn't changing. It wasn't getting better," Gunn explained. "It was staying in the same place. And I said, we can't make this film. We can't. It's not good. We know it's not good." Gunn went on to stress that having a talented team doesn't guarantee success if the story isn't working: "Just because we have a good director attached and a good screenwriter, it doesn't mean the script is working. Everyone is going to be upset at the end of this. 'It's going to come out, the movie's not going to be good. Director's going to look bad, screenwriter's going to look bad and we're going to look bad. So I don't want to have this. We're not going to make the movie. And so we killed it." While Gunn didn't reveal which project it was, the admission shows how committed he is to quality over simply pushing out content for the sake of a schedule. The DCU officially launched its theatrical slate with Superman , starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Up next is a Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow set to hit theaters next summer, and a Clayface movie that begins production later this year. What do you think, was Gunn right to axe a movie that wasn't working, even with big names attached?

David Corenswet Chooses STAR WARS Over SUPERMAN 2 While Taking a Lie Detector Test — GeekTyrant
David Corenswet might be the new face of Superman in James Gunn's DCU, but if the Force called, he'd be ready to trade in the cape for a lightsaber. During a Vanity Fair lie detector test interview with his Superman co-star Nicholas Hoult, Corenswet was put on the spot with a tough choice: Would he rather play Superman again in a sequel… or take on the role of a Jedi Knight in Star Wars? He didn't hesitate for long. With a deep breath and a sheepish grin, Corenswet chose Jedi Knight. Hoult's reaction? Pure shock. But before the DC fandom gets too worked up, Corenswet made it clear that he's still locked in as the Man of Steel for future films. 'In the end, as many things do, it came down to the money. I'm already under contract for a sequel, but I'd be fresh negotiating with Star Wars,' he joked. That's not the only time Corenswet's Star Wars fandom has shown through. He's been openly enthusiastic about the galaxy far, far away during the Superman press tour, even revealing a personal tradition: 'I just started a Star Wars marathon every New Year's Eve,' he said in the same interview. So while a Superman 2 is likely already in the cards, and in his contract, it's clear Corenswet has a deep affection for both iconic franchises. Can you blame him? He's living every geek's dream right now!
