Barcelona captain misses first pre-season session for individual training
Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who has been at the centre of transfer rumours this summer, did not join his teammates on the pitch. Instead, the German goalkeeper stayed indoors, completing gym work due to minor discomfort.

As it turns out, there has been no official injury report from Barcelona. The club only released a short update confirming that Ter Stegen trained separately.
'Ter Stegen worked separately from the group, doing exercises in the gym,' read the statement from the club.
What happened to Ter Stegen?
According to SPORT, this is simply a precaution due to slight physical issues, not a serious injury.
Ter Stegen's future has come into question after Barça signed Joan Garcia from Espanyol. The club sees Garcia as their new first-choice goalkeeper, with Wojciech Szczesny expected to arrive as the experienced backup.

In this situation, keeping Ter Stegen as a third-choice option is not realistic, either financially or competitively.
Ter Stegen is one of the club's highest earners, and with the World Cup approaching, he will not want to spend a season on the bench.
Barcelona open to letting Ter Stegen leave
Despite this complicated scenario, Barcelona have been transparent with Ter Stegen. Last Friday, head coach Hansi Flick sat down with the German keeper to clarify the club's position.
Barcelona do not want to force him out, given his importance over the last decade. However, they also understand that his role will now be different.

Ter Stegen has a contract until June 2028, including salary deferrals from previous seasons. He is not planning to terminate his deal easily, but he is open to listening to options.
The final decision will depend on whether he receives offers from other top clubs. However, the goalkeeper market in Europe is moving fast, and there are fewer and fewer positions available.

‘Big logistical issues' to fix before Open Championship returns to Trump Turnberry, says R&A chief
President Donald Trump has been warned that 'big logistical issues' remain a barrier to his Turnberry resort course hosting the Open Championship. The Scottish venue — widely rated as one of the finest in the world — last staged golf's oldest major in 2009 when Stewart Cink famously defeated veteran U.S. star Tom Watson. Advertisement Trump purchased the five-star resort in 2014 and has regularly queried why it has not returned to the rota of courses used for the tournament. A key consideration for the Royal & Ancient Golf Club (R&A), which organises the Open, is infrastructure. Turnberry is revered but also remote and with few transport links, which limits attendance. In 2009, around 123,000 spectators attended the tournament. This week, around 280,000 spectators are expected to descend on Royal Portrush for the 153rd edition of the competition. Asked at a news conference on Wednesday about Turnberry's chances of a return, R&A chief executive Mark Darbon revealed that he has been in dialogue with Trump's son, Eric, but reiterated the problems posed by the course. 'I think we have been extremely clear on our position in regard to Turnberry,' Darbon said. 'We love the golf course but we have some big logistical issues there. 'You've seen the scale of the set-up here (at Portrush) and there's some work to do on the road, rail and accommodation infrastructure around Turnberry. 'We've explicitly not taken it out of our pool of venues but we'd need to address those logistical challenges should we return. 'We need a venue that can accommodate a modern Open Championship from a logistical and commercial perspective and we want to be at venues that enable us to continue to tell the wonderful story that underpins the world's oldest major championship.' He added: 'I met a couple of months ago with Eric Trump and some of the leadership from the Trump golf organisation and from Turnberry. We had a really good discussion. I think they understand clearly where we're coming from. We talked through some of the challenges that we have so we've got a good dialogue with them.' Darbon took over from Martin Slumbers as chief executive of the R&A last year, so this was his first time addressing media ahead of an Open. Advertisement Slumbers had previously suggested Turnberry would not be a host venue while Trump was involved in American politics, as it would create unwanted coverage that would overshadow the tournament. Asked whether that remains the case, Darbon replied: 'It's a somewhat hypothetical question in that unless we address the logistical challenges, it's difficult for us to go back.' While golf fans would welcome a return to Turnberry as many enjoy the variety of Open Championship venues, the focus in more recent years has been on access, availability of tickets and the overall experience. Getting to a major golfing event in the UK is difficult because the demand far outweighs the supply. Venues across England and Scotland have also worked hard to improve public transport links, accommodation and hospitality offerings to cater for the large audience, so there is an expectation that everything is in place when spectators visit. If Turnberry can guarantee all these factors have been improved then it should be a suitable host. After a nearly decade-long absence, Trump National Doral Golf Club is expected to return to the PGA Tour circuit in 2026, according to the Sports Business Journal, so it will be interesting to see if the Scottish venue follows in the future. Turnberry was not the only venue in discussion today, as another Scottish links, Muirfield, has been waiting for a recall since 2013. Darbon added: 'There's some things that we need to evolve at Muirfield, the practice ground in particular is a challenge for us with a modern Open and there's some work we need to do with the venue to facilitate some of the infrastructure that we require, some cabling to enable the scale of the production that we have these days. But it's a good dialogue and we'd love to be back there in the future.' (Top photo of Trump at Turnberry in 2023:)

'Great club legend' Lucas Vázquez ending long stint with Real Madrid
MADRID (AP) — Lucas Vázquez, an important player for Real Madrid during one of its most successful eras, is ending his stint with the Spanish powerhouse. The club and the player said Wednesday that he is not returning for another season. 'I'm leaving Real Madrid, but Real Madrid will never leave me,' Vázquez said on social media. 'Wherever I go, I will proudly say that I had the honor of playing for the best team in the world. Thank you for joining me on the most beautiful journey of my life.' Madrid is preparing a farewell ceremony on Thursday for the 34-year-old Vázquez. 'Real Madrid would like to express our gratitude and affection to Lucas Vázquez, one of the great legends of our club,' it said in a statement. Vázquez is one of the winningest players with Madrid, having helped the club capture 23 titles, including five Champions Leagues and four Spanish leagues. He made 402 appearances, playing mostly as a right back but also as a forward, attacking midfielder and contributing off the bench. 'Lucas Vázquez represents in an exemplary way the values of Real Madrid, which has made him one of the most loved players by our fans,' club president Florentino Pérez said. 'The figure of Lucas Vázquez symbolizes the hard work, perseverance, humility and winning spirit that are essential for success in this shirt. He is a player who has the affection and recognition of all madridistas. Real Madrid is and always will be his home.' Vázquez joined the club's youth academy in 2007 as a 16-year-old. After a season on loan at Espanyol, he made his debut with Madrid's first team in 2015. He did not immediately announce his plans for the future. Madrid is coming off a disappointing season by its high standards, losing the Spanish league title to Barcelona and failing to reach the final in the Club World Cup or the Champions League. ___ AP soccer:

New Abbott And Real Madrid Program Puts Health At The Center Of Soccer's Future
Abbott and Real Madrid teamed up to launch the inaugural 'Abbott Dream Team,' which is a ... More first-of-its-kind initiative that blends elite training with health education to empower the next generation of soccer players. This summer, Abbott and Real Madrid have teamed up to launch the inaugural 'Abbott Dream Team,' which is a first-of-its-kind initiative that blends elite training with health education to empower the next generation of soccer players. Through a series of five tryouts across the U.S., the program will identify 11 standout athletes aged 18-19 who will travel to Madrid to train at Real Madrid's world-class facilities. Notably, the program was designed with a deep commitment to gender equity, with the program offering equal opportunity for both women and men to shine. For Abbott, this initiative isn't just about skill development; it's about building lifelong habits for health, resilience, and leadership for young athletes chasing their dreams in sports. 'It's not just about sports. Participants are all going to learn about health, sports nutrition, healthy lifestyles, and healthy habits,' said Chris Miller, the Divisional Vice President, Global Brand Strategy & Innovation at Abbott. 'As a health company, we're leaning in to show what health allows you to achieve, and then giving an opportunity to have 11 players come experience the best facilities and players in the world.' At its core, the Abbott Dream Team is a health initiative disguised as a soccer opportunity. For many young athletes, access to expert nutrition advice, injury prevention strategies, and recovery guidance remains limited. Abbott and Real Madrid are working to change that by embedding those lessons into a powerful, high-visibility program that blends aspiration with action. What makes the Abbott Dream Team especially notable is its commitment to gender equity. From day one, the program was designed to be open to both men and women to provide equal opportunities. 'It wasn't a decision; it was a given,' said Miller. 'This program is for athletes. Full stop. But we're also being intentional about encouraging young women to see themselves as athletes and to show up.' As part of their efforts to encourage young women to participate, Abbott partnered with former NWSL goalkeeper Brittney Wilson Isenhour to promote and take part in the tryouts. Wilson took to Instagram to reflect on her time with the Abbott Dream Team: 'Being at the Abbott Dream Team Tryouts reminded me exactly where it all began. These athletes aren't just chasing a win—they're building something bigger. Because what happens off the field—what you fuel with, how you recover, how you prepare—is what shapes the future. Abbott is helping the next generation of athletes build those habits for long-term success. Their dream could start right here.' Each of the five tryouts, located in Dallas, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Chicago and Los Angeles, has been designed for participants to receive elite-level coaching from Real Madrid's staff and personalized health and nutrition education from Abbott's team of experts. Each athlete will leave with a health toolkit and access to Abbott FC, which is a digital hub for ongoing wellness and community support. At the conclusion of tryouts, 11 selected players will travel to Madrid and have the chance to train at Ciudad Real Madrid and gain behind-the-scenes access to Real Madrid's medical and performance teams. The final two tryouts of the 'Abbott Dream Team' program will take place on Thursday, July 17, 2025 in Chicago, IL and on Thursday, July 24, 2025 in Los Angeles, CA.
