Tom Rafferty, a Super Bowl-winning OL with the Cowboys, dies at 70

Fox Sports06-06-2025
Tom Rafferty, an offensive lineman who won a Super Bowl and played with two Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterbacks in Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman over 14 seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, has died. He was 70.
Rafferty died Thursday in Windsor, Colorado, where he had been hospitalized since early May following a stroke, his daughter, Rachel Powers, told The Dallas Morning News.
A year after getting drafted out of Penn State, Rafferty's first season as a starter was at right guard in 1977, which ended with the Cowboys' 27-10 victory over Denver in Super Bowl 12. He played the same position a year later when the Cowboys lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers 35-31 in the title game.
After a move to center, Rafferty threw one of the key blocks on Tony Dorsett's record 99-yard touchdown run in a 31-27 loss at Minnesota on Jan. 3, 1983. Dallas had 10 men on the field for that famous play.
Rafferty's final season was Aikman's rookie year in 1989, when he started eight games at center for a 1-15 team.
Rafferty is one of 12 Dallas players to spend at least 14 seasons with the franchise. He was teammates with seven players on that list.

Sights and sounds from Day 1 of Washington Commanders training camp

We are back for another year of first player to the field, day one of training camp is … *drumroll* … Cole Turner Welcome back, football. Training camp opened on Wednesday for several NFL teams, including the Washington Commanders. It marked the start of a new year for Washington. Fans are excited to see what the Commanders do for an encore after last season's surprising success. A return to practice also meant the return of star quarterback Jayden Daniels. Wednesday's practice featured the Washington debut for future Hall of Fame edge rusher Von Miller. Miller was working through drills with his fellow 2011 draft alum Ryan Kerrigan, who is now Miller's coach with the Commanders. The duo has a combined 225 career sacks. The Daniels to Deebo Samuel connection already looks promising as the pair hooked up for a touchdown in the early portion of practice. It was a beautiful day in Ashburn for the opening of camp. ESPN analyst picks Rams' signing of Davante Adams as the best offseason move in the NFL

Matt Bowen is incredibly high on Adams' fit with the Rams this year The Los Angeles Rams started their offseason with a bang by signing Davante Adams before free agency began. That addition came after some aggressive recruiting tactics by Sean McVay, showing just how badly he wanted to bring Adams to Los Angeles. Adams is effectively replacing Cooper Kupp next to Puka Nacua at wide receiver and ESPN's Matt Bowen views it as a significant upgrade. In fact, Bowen ranked the Rams' signing of Adams as the best move made by any team in the NFL this offseason, putting it No. 1 on his list of the top 50 signings, trades and draft picks. It was one spot ahead of the Titans drafting Cam Ward, with the Bears acquiring Joe Thuney ranking No. 3. Here's what Bowen wrote about the Rams' addition of Adams. Adams is an immediate upgrade over Cooper Kupp given his ability to still shake press coverage and separate as the "X" receiver. Opposite Puka Nacua, Adams can isolate to win one-on-one or attack the schemed voids in Sean McVay's pass game. With five straight seasons of 1,000-plus receiving yards, he is at the top of this list because he can elevate a Rams team primed to make a run in the NFC playoffs. Bowen obviously believes this move is one that could put the Rams over the top and make them a real Super Bowl contender in the NFC. It's a perfect match between a team that's vying for a ring and a veteran who's seeking to win one after playing for bad teams in recent years. Adams is thrilled to be back home in California as a member of the Rams and the team couldn't be happier to have him on the roster. Follow Rams Wire on X, Facebook and Threads for more coverage!

Ex-Falcons wide receiver signs with Las Vegas Raiders

Former first-round pick Phillip Dorsett signs with Las Vegas Raiders as camp begins The Las Vegas Raiders have signed former Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Phillip Dorsett to their roster just in time for the start of NFL training camp. Dorsett, a former first-round draft pick, spent last season on the Falcons' practice squad and did not appear in a single game. After initially signing a reserve/futures contract with Atlanta over the offseason, Dorsett was released by the team in May to make room for linebacker Caleb Johnson. A former Super Bowl champion with the New England Patriots, Dorsett joins a revamped Raiders team led by former Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll. It will be the veteran wide receiver's second stint with the Raiders, and second time playing for Carroll. Dorsett, 32, has played for eight different teams since being selected by the Indianapolis Colts in the first round of the 2015 NFL draft. His best season came in 2016 when he recorded 33 catches for 528 yards and two touchdowns. The Falcons did not select a wide receiver in the 2025 NFL draft, but they signed former San Jose State wideout Nick Nash as an undrafted free agent. Nash recorded 1,382 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns during his final collegiate season. Atlanta's rookies and veterans reported to training camp on Wednesday and the team's first official practice is set for Thursday morning. Check out the Falcons' updated 90-man roster and open practice schedule for training camp.
