2 injured in overnight shooting at Wynwood high-rise, police say

CBS News12-06-2025
Two people were shot overnight at a high-rise in Wynwood.
According to Miami police, just before 12:30 a.m. they received a call about a shooting at 2150 N Miami Avenue. They said when officers arrived, they found two men who had been shot in their legs and a third man who had a head wound from being hit by a gun. All three were taken to the Ryder Trauma Center where they were listed as stable.
A man who lives in the building said a security guard told him that the three people broke in and made their way to the eighth or tenth flood.
That's where police said the two men were shot and the third man was hit over the head.
The man who lives in the building said the trio made their way down to the lobby, but didn't realize they had to press a button to get out. He said they rummaged through some of the offices on the ground floor and then left through a side door.
Police confirmed they had detained a person of interest. They have not said if the person is the one who fired the shots, or if there are any suspects who have not been apprehended.

1 Teen, 15, Dead and Another, 14, Hospitalized in 'Serious Condition' After Jet Ski Crash

One teenager is dead, and another was seriously injured after a jet ski crash in Sydney. The New South Wales Police Department shared in a press release that it launched an investigation into the accident, which occurred on Sydney's south shore and killed one 15-year-old boy and left a 14-year-old boy hospitalized. Police said the incident took place on Tuesday, July 22 at around 6 p.m. They received reports of a 'jet ski crash' that left 'persons in the water' and arrived on the scene on the Sylvania side of Tom Uglys Bridge on the Georges River to investigate. Officers found a 15-year-old boy already 'deceased in the water,' who was 'unable to be revived.' A 14-year-old 'was treated at the scene for a severed arm.' The teenager was sedated and placed into an induced coma before being transported to the hospital, according to The Nightly and 7News Australia. He was later transported in 'serious condition' to Sydney Children's hospital by paramedics, police said. 'A crime scene has been established and investigations commenced into the circumstances surrounding the incident,' police said in a statement. The boys had been riding on the same jet ski when the crash occurred, according to initial reports from The Nightly and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). Sutherland Shire Police Area Command Inspector Tim Carter said in a news conference, per ABC, that they suspected they hit something prior to the accident. "At this stage, it would appear the jet ski has collided with an object or obstacle in the water, which has then thrown these two boys from the jet ski, where they have sustained these injuries," he said, per the outlet. The New South Wales Police Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for additional information on the incident. One witness, Alexandra Farrugia, told ABC that she had seen a body floating near the bridge while walking nearby with her partner. "We just saw a lot of lights on the water, a lot of police on the water, and they brought someone up on his stomach," she recalled. The Georges River, where the jet ski crash occurred, is a popular site for people riding various water crafts including jet skis and boats, according to Sky News. Read the original article on People

D-Backs' Ketel Marte says he lost $400K in home burglary during All-Star Game

Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte said he lost $400,000 worth of items in a break-in at his Phoenix-area home during All-Star Game festivities. Marte went on the restricted list last Friday; Arizona reinstated him on Sunday, and he played against the Houston Astros on Monday. 'Everyone is clear that it's not a situation that we can feel good about. I'm losing about $400,000, and I think that's a lot,' Marte told reporters in Spanish after the Diamondbacks' 6-3 loss. Advertisement 'It was a bit of a tough situation, but we came back here to try not to think about those things that have happened. It doesn't feel good. Everyone knows what happened. And we're hoping that things are remedied.' Police last week said that no one was home at the time of the break-in and that there were signs of forced entry at the Paradise Valley, Ariz., house. Police said that numerous personal items and jewelry were missing. The Scottsdale Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for an update on the situation. The break-in is the latest in a string of burglaries targeting professional athletes, particularly when those athletes are away competing. Other recent burglaries include Mike Conley Jr., Karl-Anthony Towns, Luka Dončić and Bobby Portis in the NBA, Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Joe Burrow and Linval Joseph in the NFL and Tyler Seguin and Evgeni Malkin in the NHL. The Athletic's Maria Torres contributed reporting.

Prisoners' Phone Calls Will Soon Be Free in New York State

New York will make phone calls free for incarcerated people starting next month, lifting a financial burden for the loved ones of the state's more than 30,000 prisoners. It will join five other states and New York City, all of which have moved in recent years to adopt similar policies. But the change by New York State is not being accomplished legislatively; instead, it is a result of negotiations between the New York Department of Corrections and Community Supervision and its telecom provider. Beginning August 1, the department will pay the provider, Securus Technologies, 1.5 cents per minute for the calls, which the agency described as one of the lowest rates in the country, and spend $9 million on the initiative this year. Currently, the state's prisoners receive up to three free calls per week, each lasting up to 15 minutes. Calls beyond that cost 2.4 cents per minute plus service fees, which the state does not now cover. Daniel F. Martuscello III, the agency's commissioner, said phone calls created a safer environment in prisons and prepared incarcerated people for life on the outside. 'We have to provide them with services that return them to society as productive members, as mothers, fathers, husbands, wives,' he said. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.
