Strengths, weaknesses and wildcards at Cowboys TE position in 2025
For as bland as the competition looks on paper there are plenty of storylines to follow. A simple SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) shows much is hinging on a variety of factors making concern and excitement valid emotions this preseason.
Strength of Cowboys TE group: Jake Ferguson
For as terrible as Ferguson looked last season, he has undeniable chemistry with Dak Prescott and is a shoo-in to be the Cowboys' No. 3 passing option in 2025. Ferguson is just one year removed from a Pro Bowl and is entering the last year of his rookie contract. He has plenty of motivation to bounce back and should see plenty of opportunities with CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens dominating the defense's attention
Weakness of the Cowboys TE group: Depth
It's not a specific player per say, but rather a role that's concerning. The Cowboys don't appear to have a credible threat to push Ferguson in 2025 and if the TE1 has a repeat of last year, that could put Dallas in an ugly situation this season.
Luke Schoonmaker is a better player than many give him credit for, but he hasn't shown the ability to truly take over as a starter. The third-year player out of Michigan is a solid TE2 but he's not someone the Cowboys want to lean on just yet. Schoonmaker is a player to watch this preseason because not only must he produce this season, but he's probably the favorite to be the starter next season.
Wildcard at TE on the Cowboys: Brevyn Spann-Ford
Spann-Ford had an inspiring rookie season as an undrafted free agent. The 6-foot-7, 270-pound monster out of Minnesota hit the ground running as a blocker. He's likely the best blocking TE on the roster heading into training camp and has the potential to be something special someday in the NFL.
Whether that happens or not depends on his maturation as a pass catcher. Spann-Ford may never become someone who's dynamic after the catch, but his size and frame make him a mismatch machine if he can just play with more reliability and consistency as a route runner and pass catcher.

2 New York Giants named to unusual 'best of' list
We are fully into the NFL's most boring part of the year. The majority of player movement is done, although there will be more when roster cuts come next month. Training camp is still weeks away, and players are working through their respective offseason workouts. So, while we wait for that, CBS Sports recently compiled a list of the best players wearing every number from 0-99. They went through and analyzed every player wearing each number and determined which player truly "owned" their number. The New York Giants saw two players land on the list. First up was long-snapper Casey Kreiter. No. 59 - Casey Kreiter One of the few unquestioned vets of the Giants, the Pro Bowl long snapper earned a new deal this offseason after another reliable campaign as a special teams captain. Next up was center John Michael Schmitz. No. 61 - John Michael Schmitz This isn't an endorsement of Schmitz as a top-shelf center -- he's still got a ways to go trying to anchor Brian Daboll's offensive line -- so much as an admission that most elite blockers aren't wearing No. 61. Kreiter isn't a surprise; he's consistent and reliable. Schmitz, well, even the author admitted that not many elite blockers wear that number, so it was more of a lack of competition than owning his number. Notably absent from this list is Dexter Lawrence. Instead, the authors chose Nick Bosa for No. 97, snubbing Sexy Dexy. They claim Bosa has "enjoyed the greatest peaks when healthy, however, putting on a pass-rushing clinic for several Super Bowl bids in San Francisco." The Giants will debate that statement all day long.

6 most explosive Cowboys heading into the 2025 season includes two defenders
THERE GOES CEEDEE FOR THE 65-YARD SCORE 🔥💿(via @NFL) The Fourth of July is known for fireworks, and with the Dallas Cowboys known as America's Team, it feels like an appropriate weekend to identify their most explosive players. The Cowboys weren't a team that excelled in lighting up the scoreboard in 2024, but this offseason has changed the outlook for 2025. With a healthy Dak Prescott back at quarterback, the offense could return to grilling up 40-burgers once again. The Cowboys added speed and explosive pieces to a team that already had some playmakers, which should make them fun to watch; and it's not just on offense where the team has exciting players. Here's a look at the six most explosive players on the Cowboys. He might not be known as a speedster, but when the All-Pro wide receiver has the ball in his hands, he makes big plays. Lamb gets open with ease and if he makes a defender miss, he's off to the races and rarely caught. Lamb has eight touchdowns of at least 40 yards in career, a number that swells to 11 if including scores of at least 35 yards. He's a premiere WR and a threat to score anytime he touches the ball. One of the biggest pieces the offense added in the offseason was trading for the vertical threat who thrives on big plays. Pickens led the NFL in yards per catch at 18.1 in 2023, and he did that without a top-tier quarterback. Finally pairing Pickens with a top caliber QB like Prescott means fans should expect fireworks. One of the more overlooked playmakers in Dallas is their kick return specialist, who also contributes on offense. Turpin is an All-Pro kick returner who scored on both punt and kick returns last season. KaVontae Turpin goes 99 yards for the TD 🔥📺: #DALvsWAS on FOX📱: Turpin has grown as a WR in each of his three years with the Cowboys and can also be used out of the backfield. The speedy, twitchy Turpin has found the end zone as a receiver five times, as well as a runner once, making him one of the most versatile and explosive players on the roster. The rookie RB hasn't made a play in the NFL yet, but his speed and explosion will make defenses sweat. Blue had the second-fastest 40-yard time at the combine, running a 4.38 and he plays to his elite timed speed. JAYDON BLUE, HOW DO YOU DO?!?! 🔥A 77-YARD TOUCHDOWN TO MAKE IT A TWO-SCORE GAME VS. CLEMSON 😱 Blue not only excels as a runner, but also creates big plays in the passing game, making him a significant threat out of the backfield. The Cowboys desperately needed speed at RB, and Blue is a great fit as he will scare defenses, and the rookie RB can score anytime he touches it, from anywhere on the field. It's not just on offense where the Cowboys have playmakers. On the defensive side of the ball, Parsons brings elite speed and athleticism. There aren't many pass rushers who can turn the corner and pursue the QB like Parsons, who has begun his career with four consecutive double-digit sack seasons. #Cowboys DE Micah Parsons has his 30th career sack. Parsons is a game-wrecker on defense who needs to be accounted for on each snap. The perennial All-Pro also has a touchdown on a fumble return that showcased his special athletic ability. Many may not think of Bland as an explosive player, but one doesn't luck into the record holder for pick-sixes in a season without being a playmaker. Bland had 14 interceptions in his first two years, before not securing a pick last season when he missed the first 10 games due to injury. Being a ballhawk is great for the defense, but being able to turn those turnovers into points is a special trait. INT No. 6️⃣Pick-six No. 4️⃣ @DaRon_Bland 😱 He didn't have an impact last year, but that should change in 2025; Bland is one of the real big play options on the Cowboys' defense. Pro Football Focus ranks two star Aggies as Top 50 college players
Texas A&M will enter the 2025 season stacked with talent at every position. Still, most importantly, the players at the top of the depth chart bring a ton of SEC snaps to the table, especially across the offensive line and at linebacker. In the trenches, left tackle Trey Zuhn III, left guard Chase Bisontis, center Mark Nabou, right guard Ar'maj Reed-Adams, and right tackle Dametreous Crownover all possess NFL potential. However, Adams represents the entire group due to his elite run-blocking skill set, paired with his violent demeanor and overall toughness, making him a likely first or second-round selection in the 2026 NFL Draft. This offseason, Adams has been praised by nearly every college football outlet, including Pro Football Focus. Paired with junior linebacker Taurean York, the former three-star recruiting prospects have surpassed their expectations and will be heavily relied upon throughout the 2025 season. This week, PFF released its "50 best players" list, comprised of the site's top-ranked college players heading into the fall. Unsurprisingly, Adams landed at No. 16 and is the fourth offensive lineman ranked below Clemson's Peter Woods (No. 3), Utah tackle Spencer Fano, and Florida center Jake Slaughter. "Reed-Adams dominated in his first year with the Aggies. The Kansas transfer ranked second in PFF overall grade, PFF run-blocking grade and PFF WAA among Power Four guards. He is a powerful player at 6-foot-5 and 330 pounds who can excel in any run-blocking scheme. Reed-Adams led all Power Four guards in gap PFF run-blocking grade and ranked fourth in zone PFF run-blocking grade this past season." Linebacker Taurean York is regarded as the best or second-best prospect at the position behind former Texas A&M commit Anthony Hill Jr., who has since thrived during his last two seasons with the Longhorns. York's instincts and elite run-stopping ability should result in his best season yet as he continues to improve in coverage. Just a three-star recruit, York hasn't let his recruiting profile dictate his college career. He has been a starter in each of his first two college seasons and leads all returning Power Four linebackers with 59 run-defense stops since 2023. His 122 plays with first contact on ball carriers are tied for fourth in the Power Four. York has a stocky build at 6 feet and 235 pounds, and he is an excellent tackler. In the upcoming College Football 26 video game, Adams possesses the highest rating on the team (93), with York tied for third (90).
