Ex-police officers charged with child sex offences

Yahoo14-03-2025
Two retired police officers have been charged with child sex offences dating back to the 1990s.
West Yorkshire Police said two of its former officers each faced charges of rape and indecent assault against a girl aged under 16, with the alleged offences committed between 1992 and 1995.
William Baker, 78, of Hayle in Cornwall, and Ian Hopkinson, 63, of Redcar in Cleveland, would face Leeds Magistrates' Court on 7 May, the force said.
The pair were arrested in June 2024 after a woman came forward the previous year to report the offences which were alleged to have taken place in West Yorkshire while they were serving officers.
Both men were working at the time in the Mounted Section, then based in Pontefract, where Mr Baker held the rank of sergeant and Mr Hopkinson was a constable, the force said.
Mr Baker is charged with three counts of indecent assault on a girl under the age of 16 years and two counts of rape of a female under 16 years.
Mr Hopkinson is charged with five counts of indecent assault on a girl under the age of 16 years and five counts of rape of a female under 16 years.
A third former West Yorkshire Police officer was also arrested over the allegations, but has since died, with the force adding that "it was determined there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death".

‘Blackout challenge' blamed for death of child in shocking ‘tragedy': ‘A boy full of dreams'

A 12-year-old UK boy named Sebastian has died after allegedly participating in the dangerous TikTok 'blackout challenge,' which hypes a form of self-strangulation by challenging users to see how long they can go holding their breath. It's sadly claimed the lives of multiple youngsters. According to a statement by the West Yorkshire Police, authorities had been tipped off by ambulance services about the dire condition of a youth at a house in Castleford on June 27, Yorkshire Live reported. The boy was transported to the hospital, but unfortunately died shortly thereafter. The coroners are currently probing the deceased's cause of death, which they don't believe to be 'suspicious' in nature. GoFundMe organizer Agnieszka Czerniejewska described Sebastian (pictured) as a 'boy full of dreams, passion, and incredible talent.' GoFundMe On a GoFundMe page launched on behalf of Sebastian's parents, organizer Agnieszka Czerniejewska said that the boy lost his life due to participation in the 'blackout challenge.' This dangerous game — one of several potentially fatal fads to circulate TikTok — can restrict oxygen to the brain, potentially resulting in seizures, serious injury or death. In 2022, the Independent reported that at least 20 deaths had been linked to this asphyxiation game in 18 months, with 15 of the victims being just 12 or younger. Czerniejewska dubbed the youngster's death a 'tragedy beyond words.' Parents need to be more aware of what their children are partaking in online. Getty Images 'His parents gave him all the love and care in the world — but that one moment online changed everything,' she wrote on the page, which has garnered over $6,000 in donations at the time of writing. She described Sebastian as a 'boy full of dreams, passion, and incredible talent.' 'He taught himself to play the guitar and keyboard, and he loved to draw,' lamented the organizer, who is using the incident as a cautionary tale against the perils of online challenges. 'Talk to your children about what they do online,' she implored. 'Ask what they watch, who they talk to, what inspires them. Be present. Don't assume: 'My child would never do that.' The online world can be as dangerous as the real one — sometimes even more so.' Czerniejewska said she wanted to ensure that Sebastian's passing wasn't 'in vain.' 'Let it be a quiet call for awareness — a reminder to stay close, to talk more, to protect the ones we love,' she declared. 'So that other children may live. So that no other parent has to experience this unimaginable pain.'

Drivers seen 'racing' at illegal street car meet

More than 100 vehicles were seen at an illegal car meet on the borders of North and West Yorkshire, police have said. An organised event involving "racing on the roads and dangerous driving" took place on a road between Sherburn in Elmet and South Milford on Sunday evening. North Yorkshire Police said the "cruise" put passing members of the public "at risk of serious injury or worse". The force said details of registration plates had been taken and those involved could face prosecution. Insp Clive Turner said: "Driving in such a dangerous manner on public roads is completely unacceptable and risk the lives of those driving, those watching, and innocent members of the public." Many drivers who were not detained when officers broke up the gathering would receive court summonses by post, he added. Police have appealed to the public who may have any footage of the meeting to come forward. North Yorkshire Police have released previous warnings about illegal car meets and street racing in the area, and in March 2024 closed down an event at Selby Fork on the old A1. Drivers were reported to be parked in live lanes and a crackdown on the gatherings in partnership with West Yorkshire Police was announced. Boy, 12, dies in social media challenge as family condemns 'dangerous' online world

The family of a 12-year-old boy has warned of the "danger" of social media after their son died in an online challenge. Police were called to an address in Castleford, West Yorkshire, on Friday by paramedics. The child, Sebastian, was taken to hospital where it was "later confirmed he had died", West Yorkshire Police said. Enquiries to "establish exactly what happened" are ongoing, the force added. "That one moment online changed everything," an appeal on a Go Fund Me page said. It added that a "dangerous internet challenge" took Sebastian's life and that it was a "tragedy beyond words". The appeal said: "No parent should ever have to bury their child. No one should ever endure such heartbreak." Urging people to "talk to your children about what they do online", it said: "Ask what they watch, who they talk to, what inspires them. Be present. Don't assume 'my child would never do that'. "The online world can be as dangerous as the real one - sometimes even more so." Sebastian is described as a boy with a "gentle spirit" who was "full of dreams, passion, and incredible talent" and who "taught himself to play the guitar and keyboard". The appeal said: "Let Sebastian's passing not be in vain. Let it be a quiet call for awareness - a reminder to stay close, to talk more, to protect the ones we love. "So that other children may live. So that no other parent has to experience this unimaginable pain." West Yorkshire Police said in a statement: "Police were called by ambulance colleagues to an address in Manor Grove, Castleford, at 6.06pm on Friday following reports of concern for the safety of a child. "Officers attended the location and the boy was taken to hospital where it was later confirmed that he had died. "Enquiries are ongoing on behalf of the West Yorkshire Coroner to establish exactly what happened. The incident is not being treated as suspicious." Read more from Sky News:
