Ex-police officers charged with child sex offences
West Yorkshire Police said two of its former officers each faced charges of rape and indecent assault against a girl aged under 16, with the alleged offences committed between 1992 and 1995.
William Baker, 78, of Hayle in Cornwall, and Ian Hopkinson, 63, of Redcar in Cleveland, would face Leeds Magistrates' Court on 7 May, the force said.
The pair were arrested in June 2024 after a woman came forward the previous year to report the offences which were alleged to have taken place in West Yorkshire while they were serving officers.
Both men were working at the time in the Mounted Section, then based in Pontefract, where Mr Baker held the rank of sergeant and Mr Hopkinson was a constable, the force said.
Mr Baker is charged with three counts of indecent assault on a girl under the age of 16 years and two counts of rape of a female under 16 years.
Mr Hopkinson is charged with five counts of indecent assault on a girl under the age of 16 years and five counts of rape of a female under 16 years.
A third former West Yorkshire Police officer was also arrested over the allegations, but has since died, with the force adding that "it was determined there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death".

Drivers seen 'racing' at illegal street car meet
More than 100 vehicles were seen at an illegal car meet on the borders of North and West Yorkshire, police have said. An organised event involving "racing on the roads and dangerous driving" took place on a road between Sherburn in Elmet and South Milford on Sunday evening. North Yorkshire Police said the "cruise" put passing members of the public "at risk of serious injury or worse". The force said details of registration plates had been taken and those involved could face prosecution. Insp Clive Turner said: "Driving in such a dangerous manner on public roads is completely unacceptable and risk the lives of those driving, those watching, and innocent members of the public." Many drivers who were not detained when officers broke up the gathering would receive court summonses by post, he added. Police have appealed to the public who may have any footage of the meeting to come forward. Boy, 12, dies in social media challenge as family condemns 'dangerous' online world
The family of a 12-year-old boy has warned of the "danger" of social media after their son died in an online challenge. Police were called to an address in Castleford, West Yorkshire, on Friday by paramedics. The child, Sebastian, was taken to hospital where it was "later confirmed he had died", West Yorkshire Police said. Enquiries to "establish exactly what happened" are ongoing, the force added. "That one moment online changed everything," an appeal on a Go Fund Me page said. It added that a "dangerous internet challenge" took Sebastian's life and that it was a "tragedy beyond words".
