FIVE TO FOLLOW
KINGSTON CHARM (6th, Race 1)
She didn't get the clearest passage in the straight and was untested late when she looked to have plenty to offer. There is another Midway race over a mile in a fortnight that has her name on it.
SPYWIRE (2nd, Race 5)
Early signs indicate the gelding operation has done the trick with this gelding, which would have gone even closer had he got out earlier. Take nothing away from King's Secret, he was excellent too.
BEREZKA (4th, Race 5)
Just ended up too far back on the inside but made up good ground in the straight behind King's Secret. She is building towards a win for sure.
PIGGYBACK (3rd, Race 8)
The Ciaron Maher-trained mare got caught in traffic in the home straight and was only able to build momentum late to finish third behind Misterkipchoge. She's racing well and another win isn't far away.
BELVEDERE BOYS (2nd, Race 9)
New import Elamaz's win in the McKell Cup had plenty of merit first-up in Australia while this Matt Dunn-trained stayer surged home to just miss. He will be ready to win third-up.

STEWARDS SAY
New Pharoah (Race 1): Reared when the gates opened and lost seven lengths at the start. He will be forced to trial to the satisfaction of stewards before racing again.
How Much Better (Race 1): Apprentice Anna Roper was suspended for careless riding after her mount caused Pretty Tavi to lose its rightful running after shifting in at the 1000m.
Vella's Best (Race 5): Winona Costin was suspended for careless riding after shifting in on this galloper when insufficiently clear of Loafer, resulted in it being carried in onto Sovereign Hill.
Sir Artie (Race 6): Gave ground over the final 100m. He was found to be 1/5 lame in the near-foreleg post-race.
Step Aside (Race 6): Came under pressure at the 600m with jockey Ash Morgan indicating he laid out rounding the home turn and did not respond to riding. No abnormalities were found other than a superficial abrasion to the near-fore bumper.
Townsend (Race 9): Was found to be 1/5 lame in the off-foreleg.
Deprivation (Race 10): The gelding was a late scratching at 1.46pm after being fractious en route to the course and sustaining a haematoma to its hip.

CRUNCH TIME
Red Rags To Bulls (Race 2): Near last on the turn, she rattled off a slick 33.70 seconds last 600m to win. All three of her closing splits of 11.61, 10.96 and 11.73 were the best of the race.
Changing Colours (Race 4): Only had one runner behind turning for home before finishing off with a race-best last 600m of 34 seconds. Her final furlong of 11.44 was the difference.
Elamaz (Race 9): Ran the best first three splits of the race to control the McKell Cup before running his last 600m in 34.76 seconds. Runner-up Belvedere Boys run home of 34.18 saw him just come up short.
Slinky (Race 10): The fastest last 600m of the meeting went to this Bjorn Baker-trained mare, which settled a clear last in the final event before rocketing home in 32.88 seconds.

TRACK TALK
'I am quite taken by him. His demeanour was good, his action remarkable.' Jockey Josh Parr on McKell Cup winner Elamaz.
'I have been going to Brisbane and it has been a whitewash to be honest.' Parr after returning to form with a winning treble.
'I still think the best is yet to come, once we get him up over a bit further.' Bjorn Baker on Rosehill winner Puntin.
'We are just hanging in there…I'm hoping we can get to 100 but are going to struggle.' Baker again on his season pursuit of 100 metro winners.
'Autumn Glow, Lady Shenandoah and Aeliana have had good spells, and we will see how they come up before deciding on their spring programs.' Champion trainer Chris Waller's star fillies have returned to work.

Carlton captain Patrick Cripps calls on teammates to step up amid club crisis
Carlton captain Patrick Cripps says he's about to find out who among his teammates will 'step up and dig in' amid a horror on-field run that moved one former player to suggest the Blues could consider trading the skipper. A day after Carlton president Rob Priestley committed to keeping coach Michael Voss in the chair until the end of the season, Cripps said his job included trying to block the 'external' noise that is growing louder by the day in the wake of last week's horror loss to Port Adelaide. Former Hawthorn premiership star Jordan Lewis floated the idea that Cripps, as well as star forward Charlie Curnow, could provide the Blues value on the trade market. Cripps conceded times were indeed dark at the moment but in a new vodcast said staying positive, and creating 'energy', was as much as he could do in order to keep the wheels turning. 'The thing I really try to focus on as well with the other leaders is making sure we're all on the same page but also trying to keep the energy high … as much as you can, you've got to try and block the external out and it can be loud,' Cripps told the new vodcast On The Inside. 'Like for the moment, for us, it's really loud on the outside, so (it's about) how you can keep eyes in and really control and live the standards but also create the energy.' Crisis is not new to Carlton, or Cripps, who has watched two coaches be sacked since 2019 before Voss was installed, taking the Blues all the way to the preliminary final in 2023 and an elimination final in 2024. But the wheels have fallen off this season, and things don't get easier with a clash against ladder leaders Collingwood on Friday night followed by a match against reigning premiers Brisbane. With the walls closing in, Cripps said now was the time he would find out a lot of about himself as a leader and his teammates' capacity to come through it all. 'You find out a lot about yourself, I reckon, (in) these times, not only as a player but as a leader, but also (about) guys around you, the ones that really want to step up and dig in versus, like I said before, the ones that want to step away,' he said in the sit-down with fellow Brownlow medallists Tom Mitchell and Lachie Neale. 'But I feel like we've got the right group of people at the club to really band together and stick together. 'And we've got your (Mitchell's) mob this week, mate, so it's always a big clash, big rivalry, which usually brings out the best in both sides.'

AFL 2025: Jordan De Goey concussed at Collingwood training
The impending return of defensive bull Brayden Maynard for Collingwood's Friday night showdown with Carlton was offset by a 'sad' concussion injury for Jordan De Goey further setting back his return from injury. As he stepped up his rehab of an achilles injury, De Goey copped an accidental head knock early in a Tuesday morning training session forcing him off the track and he was subsequently put in to concussion protocols. Magpies coach Craig McRae labelled if a 'sad' setback for De Goey who has only played only 18 games since the Magpies' premiership triumph in 2023 after battling groin and abdominal injuries in 2024 before more injury disruptions this season. 'Jordy got a concussion in the fundamentals … it's a bit of a sad one for Jordy, he was just starting to get there,' McRae said. 'He's obviously going to be in the protocols for the next 10 to 14 days.' But while De Goey's return has been delayed, McRae said Maynard was ready to return against the Blues after a longer than expected lay-off due to a plantar fascia injury which had sidelines him for the past five weeks. Veteran Steele Sidebottom has 'man flu' and could miss the Carlton clash while Norm Smith medallist Bobby Hill remains a week by week prospect after being a late withdrawal from last Saturday night's win over West Coast for personal reasons. 'It was great to see Bobby back today … we haven't seen him around for a few days, and he's trained really well. We're excited to have him back,' McRae said. 'He's a day-to-day thing at the moment … we're not sure if he'll be available this week, but it's really great to see him back in the club.'

Gehamat Shibasaki eyes State of Origin debut with Queensland Maroons
They call him "Gem" and the rise of Gehamat Shibasaki from rugby league limbo to Queensland debutant is the ultimate diamond in the rough story. The 27-year-old centre has gone from zero to hero at Brisbane after not having an NRL deal in the preseason. Now, after scoring 12 tries in 15 matches for the Broncos, Shibasaki will make State of Origin history as the first player on a development-list contract to play Origin football. Maroons coach Billy Slater said this week that Shibasaki had "an inspirational story" to tell and the pride and emotion with which he spoke in camp on Tuesday was palpable. The phone call he fielded from Slater to tell him he was playing in the Origin decider in Sydney next week was a dream come true. Now he wants to make the most of the opportunity and ensure his first match as a Maroon is not a one-off. "I didn't have Billy's number saved so I answered it. It was a wholesome conversation and one I dreamed of as a kid," he said. "I am trying to soak it all in and focus on each day. My family is so happy and there's been a lot of happy tears. "I will take this experience and fingers crossed it's a continuing thing playing for Queensland. "I am ready. I am prepared for this. Madge [Broncos coach Michael Maguire] said to me that if you prepare well, you will be ready and I will be prepared for this. "I've done the hard work." Shibasaki, a former three-time Queensland Under 20s representative, was playing for Townsville Blackhawks in the Queensland Cup last year. By chance it was a conversation with fellow Broncos and Maroons teammate Pat Carrigan that inspired him to aim higher. "I was pretty happy with working and playing footy at the Blackhawks," he said. "The pressure of NRL, I didn't feel like going through that again, but Patty came to town to play the Cowboys and that lit the fire again. "It was just a 'wake up to yourself' sort of thing where Patty said to come back for one more try and 'come and live with me if you want'. "Now he is asking me for fuel money. "I gave Wynnum a call, they gave me a chance, and it's gone from there." Shibasaki still had no guarantees and had to earn his chance, moving from a train and trial deal with the Broncos to the development list contract he is currently on. "I'm on a development deal so I have a lot to prove. I am just playing my best footy," he said. "Six months ago, I didn't have a contract. I was just scraping through … fighting my way through the pre-season and trying to get fit. "I just kept working hard and I knew after Christmas the footy would come along. "It's all paid off. We have some outstanding players in the background at the Broncos so we are all fighting each other for a spot. "I'm just focusing on my role." AAP
