The Indian cricket team, which is staying in the heart of Birmingham in the United Kingdom, was told to stay indoors after a suspicious package was found at the nearby Centenary Square, close to their hotel.
The alert was sent out by Birmingham City Centre Police on its social media account. A BCCI source told PTI that the Indian cricketers were asked to stay indoors and not venture out in view of the security alert.
'We've currently got a cordon in place around Centenary Square, Birmingham city centre, while we investigate a suspicious package,' read a post from Birmingham City Centre Police on X.
The message read: 'We were alerted just before 3pm, and a number of buildings have been evacuated as a precaution while it's assessed. Please avoid the area.'
Usually the Indian cricketers explore the areas close to the team hotel and ahead of the second Test, they were frequenting the bustling Broad Street. Also Read | IND-W vs ENG-W 1st T20I live streaming: When & where to watch India women vs England women on TV & online; probable XIs

Shubman Gill Makes Massive Admission On 1st Test Loss vs England: "Your Mistakes..."

Heading into the second test against England at Edgbaston, Indian skipper Shubman Gill reflected on the first Test defeat and emphasised the need to minimise mistakes against a strong team. Ben Duckett 's masterful 149 set the tone for a historic run chase as England chased down the target of 371 to defeat India by five wickets at Headingley. With the win, England take a 1-0 lead in the five-match Test series. "We played well in many moments of the match, but in the moments that were not that good, we played very badly. When you play against such a team and you have to make sure that you are doing the right thing and your mistakes are not so bad that you get completely out of the game," Shubman Gill said in the pre-match press conference. "And on Day 5, we all knew that it wouldn't be that easy, even though there was 350 score on the board. But there was not that much help in the wicket for the bowlers. We had to put in very consistently tight lines, which I think we did very well in the first session. They didn't score that many runs in the first hour and in the first session." Gill said that the Duke's ball, as they get older, made scoring easier, and the lack of wickets prevented them from controlling the runs despite good, consistent bowling. "We saw with Duke's ball, especially on this ground, that as the ball gets older, it becomes easier to make runs, and if you don't take out the wicket, it becomes very difficult to contain the runs. So we did good bowling, we did consistent bowling, but because we couldn't take wickets, we didn't get half chances," Gill said. Gill reflected on the drop catches by Indian fielders and said it is not easy when you are constantly dropping catches, especially when the bowlers are creating chances. "We dropped some catches in the whole period. It's not easy when you are constantly dropping catches, especially when the bowlers are creating chances. But I think overall, we had a lot of positives in the last match as well. I think they didn't lose any wickets in 200 runs," he added. Gill also reflected on the learnings from the first test, "I could have had a 50-run worth more partnership out there with Rishabh. That was my learning from when I was batting. And when we were bowling, there were learnings like once the ball gets old and it's getting soft, there isn't much happening. So, how would you contain or how would you control the run flow, especially with the way they bat," Gill said. Going into the second Test at Birmingham, India is trailing 0-1. During the last game, India failed to defend a 371-run target, despite having four fast bowling options in Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna, Shardul Thakur, and Mohammed Siraj, and only one spinner, Ravindra Jadeja. The fast bowlers, except for Bumrah, leaked runs at a high economy, which ultimately cost India the match as much as their poor batting in the lower order. From 2018 to 2025: Shubman Gill Hopes To Take Measure Of Dukes Balls' Changing Behaviour

The rapidly evolving behaviour of Dukes, including the ball going soft 40 overs onwards, has created a major challenge for the Shubman Gill-led India in England. Gill has been getting inputs from the likes of KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja, who have been to England multiple times, on how the Dukes has evolved in the last 7-8 years. At Leeds, India missed the services of a second spinner on day five as England made short work of the 371-run target to go 1-0 up in the five-match series. India needed their pacers to strike in the run chase but, barring Bumrah, none was able to make inroads. By the time the new ball was due, the game was as good as over. On Tuesday, Gill spoke about his preference for an extra spinner in the 40-60 over phase over a pacer who would find it tough to contain the aggressive England batters. 'I have spoken to some of the players who were part of the 2018-19 series and they said the balls were slightly different in that series. Even in the 2021 series as well, the ball was doing a little bit more. The ball stopped doing between 40-60 (overs) but then 60-80, the ball started doing again a little bit,' said the captain. 'And in this match that we played and even in WTC that we saw, after the 40 overs or 45 overs, the ball becomes quite soft. 'So even if there is something happening from the ball because it's soft, it's not the carry or there's not enough from the ball where you keep creating chances from the ball. 'We felt that it is easier to contain the runs for spinners than for fast bowlers, especially when the ball is old. In these conditions, the ball does not swing as much after 30-40 overs,' he added. Sighting the red cherry, a problem area India dropped as many as seven catches at Leeds and that hurt them badly. Gill hoped that the worst is behind the team on the fielding front and the players can sight the ball better going ahead. 'This is one factor that the ball swings behind the wicket. You must have seen here that there are many problems in sighting the ball, especially when the fielders are standing in the square behind the wicket. 'Their team and our team, when there are stands behind the wicket or there are visuals behind the wicket, sometimes the ball is in sight very late. But we all know that it is difficult to sight the ball and the ball swings behind the wicket. 'It is very rare that 5-7 catches are missed in very few matches. Hopefully, it will not happen in the future,' added Gill.
