Shubman Gill Makes Massive Admission On 1st Test Loss vs England: "Your Mistakes..."

NDTV18 hours ago
Heading into the second test against England at Edgbaston, Indian skipper Shubman Gill reflected on the first Test defeat and emphasised the need to minimise mistakes against a strong team. Ben Duckett 's masterful 149 set the tone for a historic run chase as England chased down the target of 371 to defeat India by five wickets at Headingley. With the win, England take a 1-0 lead in the five-match Test series. "We played well in many moments of the match, but in the moments that were not that good, we played very badly. When you play against such a team and you have to make sure that you are doing the right thing and your mistakes are not so bad that you get completely out of the game," Shubman Gill said in the pre-match press conference.
"And on Day 5, we all knew that it wouldn't be that easy, even though there was 350 score on the board. But there was not that much help in the wicket for the bowlers. We had to put in very consistently tight lines, which I think we did very well in the first session. They didn't score that many runs in the first hour and in the first session."
Gill said that the Duke's ball, as they get older, made scoring easier, and the lack of wickets prevented them from controlling the runs despite good, consistent bowling.
"We saw with Duke's ball, especially on this ground, that as the ball gets older, it becomes easier to make runs, and if you don't take out the wicket, it becomes very difficult to contain the runs. So we did good bowling, we did consistent bowling, but because we couldn't take wickets, we didn't get half chances," Gill said.
Gill reflected on the drop catches by Indian fielders and said it is not easy when you are constantly dropping catches, especially when the bowlers are creating chances.
"We dropped some catches in the whole period. It's not easy when you are constantly dropping catches, especially when the bowlers are creating chances. But I think overall, we had a lot of positives in the last match as well. I think they didn't lose any wickets in 200 runs," he added.
Gill also reflected on the learnings from the first test, "I could have had a 50-run worth more partnership out there with Rishabh. That was my learning from when I was batting. And when we were bowling, there were learnings like once the ball gets old and it's getting soft, there isn't much happening. So, how would you contain or how would you control the run flow, especially with the way they bat," Gill said.
Going into the second Test at Birmingham, India is trailing 0-1. During the last game, India failed to defend a 371-run target, despite having four fast bowling options in Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna, Shardul Thakur, and Mohammed Siraj, and only one spinner, Ravindra Jadeja.
The fast bowlers, except for Bumrah, leaked runs at a high economy, which ultimately cost India the match as much as their poor batting in the lower order.
India's Test squad for England series: Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav.

2nd Test: Jaiswal makes 87, Gill unbeaten on 42 as India reach 182/3 at tea

Birmingham: Yashasvi Jaiswal's promising knock ended in him making 87 while captain Shubman Gill showed enormous patience to be unbeaten on 42 as India reached 182/3 in 53 overs at tea on day one of second Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test against England at Edgbaston on Wednesday. It was a session where old-fashioned attritional cricket took centrestage, as India made 84 runs in 28 overs. Though Jaiswal fell 13 runs short of his sixth Test hundred, Gill continued to hold fort in his unbeaten 109-ball knock laced with just three boundaries. With Rishabh Pant unbeaten on 14 off 28 balls, India will look to pile more runs, as another session of toil awaits England's bowlers. The second session began with Gill and Jaiswal picking up singles whenever an opportunity came. While Jaiswal got a boundary by slicing over the slips, Gill got his boundaries off edges through gully twice, while being severely tested on playing around his front pad. Woakes continues to test Gill around the middle stump line in the hope of getting him playing across his front pad, but the Indian skipper, batting outside the crease, handled it well with his sturdy forward defence. With Tongue and Bashir coming in, Jaiswal and Gill got a four each as they brought up the fifty-run partnership. But Stokes once again pulled a rabbit out of a hat to get England a vital breakthrough, as Jaiswal tried to cut one away outside off and got a thin edge behind to keeper Jamie Smith, with the England skipper ecstatic in his celebration. While Gill continued to be happy in getting singles on both sides of the wicket, Pant took his time and respected some good bowling coming his way before dancing down the pitch to smack a half-volley from Bashir over long-on for six. The duo knocked off singles in the last two overs before tea break arrived. Brief Scores: India 182/3 in 53 overs (Yashasvi Jaiswal 87, Shubman Gill 42 not out. Rishabh Pant 14*; Brydon Carse 1-26, Ben Stokes 1-33) against England

Ankeet Chavan to coach Mumbai Under-14; Omkar Salvi retained as Ranji coach

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has appointed former left-arm spinner Ankeet Chavan as head coach of Mumbai Under-14 team. Chavan was one of the three Rajasthan Royals players who was banned for life for the alleged spot-fixing in 2013. They were allowed to resume their competitive cricket two years ago after the Indian cricket board had reduced their ban to seven years. Chavan continued to play club cricket in Mumbai for Karnataka Sports Club and later cleared his Level-1 exam as for coaching. 'I'm looking forward to it (on his new assignment). It's a second innings for me and there is always a turn around. I really want to thank MCA for showing faith in me. Coaching was certainly on my mind and I know what challenges it has going ahead. As it's Under-14 cricket I want to work on the basics of players and show them the path so that they can improve their game,' Chavan told The Indian Express. In 2013, the BCCI disciplinary committee had found S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Chavan guilty of spot-fixing in the IPL and had handed them life bans. However in 2015, a Delhi trial court dropped all charges against these players for lack of evidence. However, the BCCI continued to impose a life ban. In June 2021, the BCCI reduced the ban of all cricketers involved in spot fixing scandal to seven years. Chavan played 18 First-Class matches and 20 List A games apart from 13 IPL matches. The MCA announced its appointments of coaches and selectors across age group cricket on Wednesday. The MCA has decided to retain its head coach of the Ranji Trophy team Omkar Salvi for next domestic season. MCA president Ajinkya Naik in a statement said, 'His (Salvi) outstanding leadership and coaching over the past two seasons have played a vital role in the team's strong performances. His ability to bring out the best in players has been exceptional.' On the back of his Ranji Trohpy show, Salvi was appointed as bowling coach of Royal Challengers of Bangalore last season. Sandip Patil will also continue as the chairman of the selection committee.

Manolo Marquez and AIFF part ways mutually; Federation to put out advertisement for head coach role

The Manolo Marquez chapter in Indian national team football ended on a rather anticlimactic note as the All India Football Federation (AIFF) mutually agreed to part ways with the Spaniard on Wednesday. The decision was one of the many taken at the AIFF Executive Committee Meeting today. 'Mr. Marquez did not resign. After discussions with the AIFF, it was mutually agreed that he will not continue as India (men) coach. Accordingly, he was let go,' M. Satyanarayanan, the acting general secretary of the AIFF, told Sportstar. Marquez, who guided Hyderabad FC to the Indian Super League (ISL) title in 2022 and won the Super Cup with FC Goa this year, had succeeded Igor Stimac as India coach a year ago. India did not win any competitive match under the Spaniard, despite Sunil Chhetri, India's record goalscorer, coming out of retirement earlier this year. His last match was a 0-1 loss to Hong Kong, India's first competitive defeat to the opponent in 32 years. Marquez was in two minds after the draw with Bangladesh in the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers in March and had eventually made up his mind to move on. However, there were discussions between the AIFF and the coach, with the latter pushing for Marquez to continue. That ultimately hinged his decision on the third round qualifier against Hong Kong on June 10, where the loss acted as his breaking point. The Blue Tigers played eight matches under him, including friendlies, losing thrice and winning just once, a 3-0 victory over the Maldives. The Federation will now put up an advertisement for the vacant position, with Jamshedpur FC head coach Khalid Jamil one of the names expected to be on the shortlist as a replacement. Khalid, like Marquez, has been a coach in the Indian Super League (ISL) and is the only Indian manager in the league. He has taken two ISL sides, Jamshedpur FC and NorthEast United FC, to the ISL Cup semifinals, while the former was the Super Cup runner-up last season. 'Jamshedpur FC has not officially received an offer from AIFF for Khalid, and he has a contract with the club till 2026. If at all such an offer comes, the club will decide then,' a source told Sportstar.
