Detectives say the arrest comes after great concern in the Johnston area following the alleged sexual assault.
A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "A 38-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the serious sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl in Johnstone on Sunday, 13 July, 2025.
"He is due to appear in court at a later date."
Detective Inspector David Hardie said: "We know this incident has caused concern in the local community and I would like to thank members of the public for their support during our enquiries."

Scots footballer on parole weeks after jail sentence for £600k drug smuggling plot
Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, 34, was jailed for four years in June for orchestrating the importation of a 60kg (132lb) haul but has now been released on parole after his time on remand was taken into account. A Scots football star who took part in a £600k drug smuggling plot has begged for forgiveness while driving a flash Tesla and getting his hair braided after being released on parole. Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, 34, was jailed for four years in June for orchestrating the importation of a 60kg (132lb) haul but has now been released on parole after his time on remand was taken into account. Speaking for the first time since being released, Emmanuel-Thomas apologised to Greenock Morton - the club he was playing for when arrested. Posting on his personal Instagram, the striker - who also played for Arsenal, Aberdeen and Livingston, among other clubs - said: "Apologies to all affiliated with Greenock Morton. "I let you guys down big time, hopefully you can forgive me. If the chance comes along I will right my wrongs but that will be up to the club, if it does not I wish you all the best and thank you." He also posted a video of himself driving a Tesla, getting his hair braided and training on a football pitch - seemingly in London. Emmanuel-Thomas was arrested after a drugs haul was found at London Stansted Airport, Essex, on September 2. His girlfriend, 33-year-old Yasmin Piotrowska, and her friend, Rosie Rowland, 29, had been recruited to travel to Thailand and smuggle the cannabis back. After landing in London on a flight from Bangkok, the pair were stopped and their suitcases searched - with officers finding a total of 60kg of cannabis in their four suitcases. Piotrowska, of Kensal Green, London, and Rowland, of Chelmsford, Essex, were also charged with smuggling cannabis. However, the women said they believed they were transporting gold, and they were acquitted. It is believed Thomas, who was living in Gourock, near Glasgow, was the intermediary between suppliers in Thailand and drug pushers in the UK. The investigation revealed that with Thomas's encouragement, the women had made a near identical trip - all expenses paid and a promised payment of £2,500 - a few months earlier in July. On his way to custody after being arrested, he said unprompted: "I just feel sorry for the girls." Emmanuel-Thomas was once a prodigy at Arsenal, and tipped for the top but he slid down the footballing pyramid and was tempted into crime during "significant financial hard times" when out of contract, his barrister said during sentencing.

Moment out-of-control TRACTOR ploughs into house after Mercedes crash outside petrol station sent it veering off course
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A DRIVER has been sentenced after causing a tractor to veer of the road and into a nearby house. The driver was found to be under the influence of drugs when he slammed into the tractor on April Fool's Day this year. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 3 A silver Mercedes can be seen barrelling into a yellow tractor Credit: Cheshire Police 3 The tractor bounced down the road, following the collision Credit: Cheshire Police 3 Finally, the tractor smashed into a nearby house destroying it Credit: Cheshire Police In the video, the yellow tractor can be seen driving down the road on April Fool's Day - when the silver Mercedes drives straight into its path. The tractor jolts from the impact, temporarily lifting its front wheels into the air. The massive vehicle then barrels forward, continuing to bounce along the road at a rapid speed. Meanwhile, the silver Mercedes pulls into the road with part of its front plating hanging off. The tractor, carrying a giant, red agricultural tanker behind it, then blasts through a front lawn fence and smashes into a nearby home. Then, it crashes through the wall of a house and shatters the building into pieces. Plumes of smoke begin to billow from the crash site, while a yellow flash can be seen in the cockpit. The footage, released by Cheshire police, was taken from a Shell garage on Vicars Cross Road. Matthew Cumpsty was hauled before Chester Crown Court on July 15 to be sentenced in relation to the shocking road accident. He represented himself at court and said he was "devastated" at what had happened. He added: "I would just like to say I have never been in trouble before." Cumpsty was handed a 12 month community order, which includes 200 hours of community service. The 52-year-old was also ordered to pay £85 in costs and a £114 surcharge. During the court appearance, he admitted to having a previous caution for unlawful drug possession from 2008. After the April 1, 2025, crash, a road side drug test found cocaine in Cumpsty's system and a following blood test found that he had 65mcg/l of BZE in his system. The legal limit is 50mcg/l. After the sentencing, police constable Richard Phillips said: "While Cumpsty has shown remorse for his actions, the impact of his actions that day were life-changing and it was pure chance that nobody suffered any serious injuries. "As a result of one bad decision to get behind the wheel while under the influence, several families were left homeless and commuters travelling into Chester were left with serious disruption for several weeks while repair work was undertaken. "In addition, Cumpsty is facing a lengthy driving ban, I hope that this ban will give him time to reflect on his actions that day." Cumpsty was insured and any compensation will be covered by his insurance company. A fundraiser has More to follow... Amess family ‘deeply hurt' after Home Secretary letter following Prevent review
Radd Seiger said Sir David's family were 'deeply hurt and angered by the utterly dismissive tone' of Yvette Cooper's letter and that her 'piecemeal approach… will never deliver the whole truth, accountability and justice.' He also said the family were given 'next to no notice' of the timing or advance sight of the report, adding media leaks were a further insult to the family. The Amess family have said they will respond in full to the report once they have consulted their legal team. In her written statement laid before Parliament, Ms Cooper said: 'My department remains steadfast in its commitment to keeping the public safe and safeguarding people at risk of radicalisation. 'The victims, their families and those who survived the Southport attack but continue to live with the physical and emotional pain, and Sir David Amess's family remain in our hearts and prayers.' In his review, Independent Prevent Commissioner David Anderson KC said 'intensive' efforts have been made to improve Prevent processes, but the 'jury is out' on some of the changes In the Home Secretary's letter, seen by the PA news agency, Ms Cooper said she realises the 'seriousness' of the failings in Sir David's case and that she hoped the family found Lord Anderson's report to be 'thorough and considered'. Sir David's terrorist killer Ali Harbi Ali was referred to Prevent seven years before the so-called Islamic State fanatic stabbed the veteran MP at his constituency surgery in Essex in October 2021. He was sentenced to a whole-life order the following year. In her letter, Ms Cooper said Lord Anderson had 'conducted an incisive analysis of the perpetrator's case management, the findings of the Prevent Learning Review and the impact of changes made since then'. She added: 'I realise the seriousness of these failings and it reflects the deep concerns you have long held about what went wrong. 'Lord Anderson acknowledges improvements made to Prevent since then but also identifies further important opportunities for change in the wider Prevent system.' Her letter added: 'My determination to make whatever changes are considered necessary is unflinching and a further formal Government response to Lord Anderson's report will follow in the autumn. 'However, I want to be clear that it is without question that where recommendations can be implemented immediately, I will ensure that these are delivered.' Mr Seiger told PA the letter had left the family 'retraumatised, blindsided and feeling marginalised'. He said: 'This is an absolutely appalling letter from the Home Secretary who frankly should know better than to insult the family in this way. 'They are deeply hurt and angered, by the utterly dismissive tone as well as the timing of the Home Secretary's letter accompanying the publication of Lord Anderson KC's report. 'It is difficult to see it as anything other than a calculated exercise in damage limitation, designed not to support the family in their search for answers but to protect the Government following its failings. 'Yet again, we see victims being kicked when they are down. 'This supposed act of courtesy has left the family retraumatised, blindsided, and feeling marginalised in a process that should have had their voices and wellbeing at its heart from the outset. 'The Prime Minister and Home Secretary must understand that a piecemeal approach, which is what they are taking, however well-dressed in public relations, will never deliver the whole truth, accountability and justice for Sir David.' The Home Office has been contacted for comment.
