Ryanair cancels 170 flights because of French air traffic control strikes
The Irish carrier said the cancellations on Thursday and Friday will affect flights to and from France, and also flights over the country to destinations such as the UK, Greece, Spain and Ireland.
Ryanair chief executive Michael O'Leary renewed calls on EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to take 'urgent action' to reform European Union air traffic control (ATC) services in light of the disruption, which comes at the start of the European summer holidays.
Mr O'Leary said: 'Once again, European families are held to ransom by French air traffic controllers going on strike.
'It is not acceptable that overflights over French airspace en route to their destination are being cancelled/delayed as a result of yet another French ATC strike.
'It makes no sense and is abundantly unfair on EU passengers and families going on holidays.'
Ryanair has long-campaigned for an overhaul of ATC services across Europe.
It wants the EU to ensure ATC services are fully staffed for the first wave of daily departures, as well as to protect overflights during national ATC strikes.
'These two splendid reforms would eliminate 90% of all ATC delays and cancellations, and protect EU passengers from these repeated and avoidable ATC disruptions due to yet another French ATC strike,' Mr O'Leary added.
Ryanair also said on Wednesday it had been hit by the recent conflict in the Middle East, and it cancelled more than 800 flights last month.
It is among those to have cancelled and rerouted flights amid the conflict between Israel and Iran, as well as continued attacks in Gaza.
Last week, flights were halted at Dubai airport in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as passengers were told to expect further delays and cancellations.
Ryanair said it still operated more than 109,000 flights in June, indicating that fewer than 1% of flights were affected.
The Ireland-based business carried 19.9 million passengers in June, representing a 3% increase on the same month last year.

The lively Dover Yard bar (one of my personal favorites in London) offers an extensive whisky and spirits collection, and an immersive cocktail menu. In fact, the new cocktail menu, Regenerative Forces, has just launched, which draws inspiration from the restorative forces that drive nature, fire, water, earth and wind. Last but not least, make sure to dine at the iconic Dove Tale restaurant, led by 2-Michelin Star chef, Tom Sellers. The raw bar offers fresh oysters and caviar, alongside various types British seafood, while the Land section of the menu gives the carnivores among us some fantastic choices. Sharing plates are also offered alongside fresh pasta dishes. The ingredients are all locally sourced, with the fruit and vegetables are sourced within a four hour radius of London. Ryanair and easyJet cancel hundreds of flights amid air traffic control strikes
Thousands of passengers have had their travel plans disrupted after low-cost airlines Ryanair and easyJet cancelled hundreds of flights due to French air traffic control strikes. Ryanair said it was forced to make 170 cancellations on Thursday and Friday as the strikes affect flights to and from France – and also flights over the country to destinations such as the UK, Greece, Spain and Ireland – impacting more than 30,000 passengers. Luton-based rival easyJet said it had cancelled 124 flights today and was scrapping 150 tomorrow due to the industrial action. EasyJet said customers have been contacted directly and have the option to transfer to another flight for free or receive a refund, but advised all passengers to check the status of their flights in case of further disruption over the next two days. 'While this is outside of our control, we will do all we can to minimise the impact of the strike action,' easyJet said. OpenAI Blasts Robinhood for Selling OpenAI Tokens
OpenAI warns consumers that Robinhood's sale of "OpenAI tokens" will not give them equity or stock in the company. On Monday, Robinhood, the stock, options, and crypto trading platform, announced it was making tokenized shares of OpenAI and SpaceX available to users in Europe. Robinhood said users in the European Union who onboard to trade stock tokens by July 7 will receive 5 euros worth of OpenAI and SpaceX tokens. CNBC reports that the company is offering $1 million worth of OpenAI and $500,000 worth of SpaceX. The news sent Robinhood's shares up nearly 13%, hitting a new all-time high for the company. That's all well and good for Robinhood, but OpenAI was not so pleased, and tweeted a response that leaves no doubt about how they feel about it: "These 'OpenAI tokens' are not OpenAI equity. We did not partner with Robinhood, were not involved in this, and do not endorse it. Any transfer of OpenAI equity requires our approval—we did not approve any transfer. Please be careful." (A special purpose vehicle, or SPV, is a subsidiary created by a parent company to isolate financial risk, per Investopedia.) Meaning they are offering ownership of the vehicle that owns OpenAI shares, not direct OpenAI shares. Robinhood's help center further explains: "When buying stock tokens, you are not buying the actual stocks — you are buying tokenized contracts that follow their price, recorded on a blockchain. You can buy, sell, or hold stock tokens — but you cannot send them to other wallets or platforms at this time." If that's confusing to you, perhaps this isn't the investment opportunity for you.
