Indian Express21 hours ago
Around twenty-four hours after the body of a minor was recovered from a forest area near her house in West Tripura district, her maternal uncle and a neighbour were arrested on Monday for allegedly raping and killing the girl, the police said in Agartala.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, an officer from the local police station said: 'We have arrested two persons accused of being involved in the crime,' and added that they will produce both the accused before a local court with a plea to remand them in police custody.
Officers said the girl used to live with her brothers at their house which was located close to her maternal uncle's residence.
According to the police, the murder is likely to have taken place on the night of Friday, though further investigation is underway to determine the exact time and cause of the death.
'We received information on Monday that a body was found in the jungle. Our police team reached the spot and found that the girl's relatives took her body to her house. We started our investigation from there,' an officer said.
The girl's brother filed a complaint at the local police station on Sunday on the basis of which the police lodged a case under section 103/1 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and section 8 (sexual assault) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act.
During the primary investigation, the police found no injury marks on the deceased girl's body except for some blood on the lower limbs.
An officer said, 'She may have been strangulated as per our preliminary probe. Her maternal uncle noticed the body first and informed the locals. Our investigation is on.'

In a tragic case from Sharjah, UAE, a 33-year-old woman from Kerala, Vipanchika Mani, and her one-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Vybhavi, were found dead in their apartment on July 8. She claimed her in-laws criticised her wedding for not being grand enough and demeaned her for not bringing a car as part of the dowry. They allegedly referred to her as 'homeless' and accused her of begging for money despite her earning a salary. The note also included serious accusations against her husband, alleging sexual abuse inspired by pornography, physical assaults, and being denied food and shelter, including being thrown out of the house while seven months pregnant. She further claimed her husband's father behaved inappropriately with her, and when confronted, Nitheesh allegedly responded, 'I married you not just for myself, but for my father too.' Her head was shaved to make her look less attractive, suggesting a motive driven by complexion-based insecurity, as she was fair-skinned while her in-laws were darker. Live Events Family, legal action and investigation Vipanchika's family has alleged that the incident is not a simple suicide, but a case of 'double murder', accusing the in-laws of prolonged cruelty and mental torture. The Kollam Police have registered an FIR against her husband, sister-in-law, and father-in-law under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961. The charges include: Section 85 BNS – Cruelty by husband or relatives Section 108 BNS – Abetment of suicide Section 3 – Penalty for giving or taking dowry Section 4 – Penalty for demanding dowry According to Mathrubhumi, Vipanchika was employed as a filing clerk at a private company in Dubai for the past seven years. Her husband, also working in Dubai, was reportedly living separately. The couple had initiated divorce proceedings prior to the incident. The UAE authorities are conducting a parallel investigation into the deaths. Both the Indian and UAE police are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the case to determine whether it was indeed a suicide or a result of sustained abuse leading to murder.

Madras High Court orders Tamil Nadu cop's suspension over mishandling SC/ST case

The Madras High Court has directed the Director General of Police (DGP) to suspend Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sunil, posted in Kottakuppam, Viluppuram district in Tamil Nadu, for what it termed a serious procedural lapse in handling a case filed under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, case relates to a 2024 complaint lodged by Senthamarai, a Dalit woman. The court noted that instead of forwarding the case to the jurisdictional Magistrate as required under the law, DSP Sunil allegedly closed the inquiry and sent the papers directly to the District Collector. The bench described this act as 'wholly impermissible'.advertisement'The procedure adopted by Deputy Superintendent of Police Sunil is completely contrary to law and amounts to a gross violation of the statutory mandate,' the court said. It further warned that such deviations could result in a denial of justice, particularly in cases involving vulnerable communities. Highlighting the gravity of the lapse, the court stated, 'Forwarding the papers to the District Collector, without placing them before the Court, reflects a serious procedural irregularity.'Alongside ordering DSP Sunil's suspension, the High Court also directed the DGP to circulate clear instructions to all police officers across Tamil Nadu. The directive includes a reminder of the legal requirement under Section 173 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), 1973, which mandates that final reports must be submitted to the jurisdictional Special Court, accompanied by a Report on Completion of Investigation (RCS) notice.- Ends IN THIS STORY#Tamil Nadu
