Will reach out to Centre seeking protection of Kakinada wetlands: BJP leader

The Hindu13 hours ago

Former Kakinada District BJP President Chilukuri Ram Kumar, announced on Sunday that the party would reach out to the Central government to protect and conserve the Kakinada wetlands, under the control of the Salt Commissioner's Organisation (SCO), as they are crucial for the coastal security of the Kakinada Smart City in Andhra Pradesh.
The announcement follows after the Department of Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) under the Ministry of Commerce and Trade, in principle, consented to transferring 1,245.28 acres of land to the Andhra Pradesh Maritime Board (APMB). The Kakinada District authorities are now engaged in assessing the cost of the 1,245.28 acres of land that is under the jurisdiction of the SCO.
The Chollangi and Gurajanapalli wetlands are spread in 626.37 acres of the 1,245.28 acres of land near Kakinada city.
In an official release, Mr. Ram Kumar said; 'The decision to transfer the wetlands (SCO's lands) to APMB cannot be welcomed. The Chollangi wetland, adjacent to Coringa mangroves, falls in the Central Asian Flyway zone of migratory birds and qualifies to be declared as an Important Bird Area in Andhra Pradesh. The Chollangi wetland needs to be protected as the Smart City of Kakinada is expanding. This wetland can be compared to the Navi Mumbai wetlands of Mumbai city that play a vital role in coastal security.'
He added that public representatives are being consulted before reaching out to the Central government authorities for the protection of the wetlands.' Additionally, Kakinada-based environmentalists and Non-Governmental Organisations are also being consulted in regards to the conservation of the wetlands.

DMK govt ‘running on commission, collection and corruption', says EPS

KALLAKURICHI: AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Sunday alleged that the DMK government is 'running on commission, collection, and corruption'. Speaking at a welfare assistance distribution event in Ulundurpet, Palaniswami said, 'Corruption has worsened under the DMK regime. Every department is affected. No land registration happens without bribes. Even at Tasmac, a bribe of Rs 10 is collected per bottle. Law and order has also deteriorated. Movement of banned substances has increased.' Palaniswami said no one can take over the AIADMK. 'MK Stalin is unable to tolerate our alliance with the BJP. He says the AIADMK is finished, but he is daydreaming. Look at the gathering here, everyone should work for the victory of AIADMK and alliance candidates. Youth and women should work to ensure our victory in all five Assembly constituencies of Kallakurichi district.' Palaniswami said even after MGR's death, DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi could not destroy the AIADMK. After Jayalalithaa's demise, Stalin tried to topple the AIADMK but failed. 'In 2026 election, the AIADMK will win and form the government with a clear majority,' Palaniswami asserted. Responding to Stalin's repeated remarks that AIADMK lost 10 elections under his leadership, Palaniswami said, 'How many times did the DMK lose from 2011 to 2021? In 2011, the DMK couldn't even sit in the opposition benches. The DMK came to power with false promises. The DMK has failed to fulfil its poll promises of getting NEET exemption, increasing working days under 100-day job scheme, education loan waiver and restoration of old pension scheme.'

AAP hand in glove with BJP-led Central government, says Punjab Congress chief Warring

By Harpreet Kaur , Hoshiarpur Jun 30, 2025 08:42 AM IST Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring on Sunday alleged that the AAP government in Punjab is hand in glove with the Centre and that's why chief minister Bhagwant Mann acted against the farmers. Hoshirpur, Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring addressing a rally in Hoshiarpur on Sunday. (Harpreet Kaur/HT) Addressing a 'Samvidhan Bachao' rally, Warring said that agriculture was Punjab's lifeline and the BJP-led government was bent on destroying it by enforcing farm laws and denying minimum support price (MSP) to crops. The rally was organised by former minister Sunder Sham Arora. 'The Centre thinks that if it will touch their raw nerve, the whole Punjab will feel the pain. Then it will be easy for it to enforce its ideology', Warring alleged, stating that the BJP-led Union government was weakening the state as it refused to accept RSS ideology. Warring said that the RSS and the BJP never accepted the Constitution and after coming to power, were strategising to weaken it. 'The Congress, under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi would never allow it. It was because of the Constitution that the Indians had become 'citizens' or else they would still be 'subjects' of their rulers. The Constitution brought equality and secularism and gave people the right to live respectfully. It is the responsibility of every citizen to save the Constitution,' he added. Later talking to the media, Warring said that there was no rift in the party. 'Like other families, the Congress family too has some differences but you cannot call them rift. These are temporary and when Punjab's interest will be at stake, all will come together,' he said.

Expelled leader Eshwarappa hints at return to BJP

Ballari: Expelled BJP leader K S Eshwarappa on Sunday indicated a possible return to the party, saying 'the BJP was his life' and there was no question of him joining any other political outfit. He said he was considering meeting senior BJP leaders and that some within the party were also open to his return. The BJP had expelled Eshwarappa, a former state president and Deputy Chief Minister, for six years last year for violating party discipline and contesting the Lok Sabha polls as an independent from Shivamogga, rebelling against the party's official candidate. Eshwarappa had entered the fray, accusing state BJP chief B Y Vijayendra and his father, veteran leader B S Yediyurappa, of denying his son K E Kantesh a ticket from Haveri. Vijayendra's brother and sitting MP B Y Raghavendra was the BJP candidate from Shivamogga. 'I don't know the details. I only heard through TV reports that BJP workers from the Kuruba community (to which I belong) held a meeting and demanded my return. Some of them spoke kindly about me, but beyond that, I'm not aware of anything,' Eshwarappa said. Speaking to reporters, he said, 'Where will I go if I leave the BJP? My life is at this party. Let's see, I'm thinking of speaking to some senior leaders. I've also heard that some of them are considering my return. After discussions, things may take shape. But I will not leave the BJP for any other party.' Asked whether he had received invitations from other parties, Eshwarappa said some ministers in the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government had approached him, offering suitable positions for him and his son. He also claimed that Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav had invited him. 'Hindutva is like my breath. I joined the BJP because of Hindutva. Even if I die, I won't leave the BJP or Hindutva. So, there is no question of joining any other party,' he added.
