Will reach out to Centre seeking protection of Kakinada wetlands: BJP leader
Former Kakinada District BJP President Chilukuri Ram Kumar, announced on Sunday that the party would reach out to the Central government to protect and conserve the Kakinada wetlands, under the control of the Salt Commissioner's Organisation (SCO), as they are crucial for the coastal security of the Kakinada Smart City in Andhra Pradesh. The announcement follows after the Department of Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) under the Ministry of Commerce and Trade, in principle, consented to transferring 1,245.28 acres of land to the Andhra Pradesh Maritime Board (APMB). The Kakinada District authorities are now engaged in assessing the cost of the 1,245.28 acres of land that is under the jurisdiction of the SCO. The Chollangi and Gurajanapalli wetlands are spread in 626.37 acres of the 1,245.28 acres of land near Kakinada city. In an official release, Mr. Ram Kumar said; 'The decision to transfer the wetlands (SCO's lands) to APMB cannot be welcomed. The Chollangi wetland, adjacent to Coringa mangroves, falls in the Central Asian Flyway zone of migratory birds and qualifies to be declared as an Important Bird Area in Andhra Pradesh. The Chollangi wetland needs to be protected as the Smart City of Kakinada is expanding. This wetland can be compared to the Navi Mumbai wetlands of Mumbai city that play a vital role in coastal security.' He added that public representatives are being consulted before reaching out to the Central government authorities for the protection of the wetlands.' Additionally, Kakinada-based environmentalists and Non-Governmental Organisations are also being consulted in regards to the conservation of the wetlands.

Centre consents to transfer 1,245 acres of Salt Commission's land to AP Maritime Board in Kakinada
The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), under the Ministry of Commerce and Trade, has in principle, consented to transfer 1245.28 acres of land under the Salt Commissioner's Organisation (SCO) to the Andhra Pradesh Maritime Board (APMB). The land transfer will be done through the SCO under the DPIIT's Internal Policy Guidelines (IPG)-2024. This move by the DPIIT came in response to a request made by the APMB for the transfer of a huge chunk of the SCO's land in Kakinada city and its surrounding areas, which are primarily wetlands and fall in the Central Asian Flyway Zone for the migratory birds. According to an official release issued by Kakinada District Joint Collector Rahul Meena, the 1245.28 acres of land sought to be transferred to the APMB is in Kakinada city and Karapa and Tallarevu mandals — 626.37 acres in Gurajanapalli and Chollangi, 501.37 acres in Penuguduru village, and 117.65 acres in Jagannadhapuram and Kakinada city. The Chollangi wetland, which is adjacent to Coringa Mangroves, is a renowned wetland that qualifies to be declared as an 'Important Bird Area' in Andhra Pradesh. Kakinada Collector Sagili Shan Mohan told The Hindu, 'A request to transfer the SCO's land has been made to the Government of India by the AP Maritime Board. Clarity will come once the land transfer is done to proceed with the proposals for various projects.' Responding to the directives by the Office of the Deputy Salt Commissioner, Chennai, the Kakinada District Revenue and Registration and Stamps officials began an exercise to assess the cost of the land to be transferred to the APMB. The Internal Policy Guidelines (IPG)-2024 have fixed the price index meant for the land that is to be transferred to the States, Central government departments and Public Sector Units. The cost is fixed based on the nature of the land and transfer is done on 'as is where is' basis. The IPG-2024 states, 'Land falling under mangrove/protected forest/creeks/waterbodies/ecological fragile areas may be transferred 'free of cost' to State governments concerned on 'as is where is' basis.' Headed by Collector Mr. Shan Mohan, a team of District Revenue Officer J. Venkata Rao and other officials is engaged in assessing the land cost to submit a report to the Deputy Salt Commissioner.
