Larry Lamb, 77, retires from acting after emotional Gavin and Stacey finale

Metro9 hours ago
After a 'very fortunate career', TV icon Larry Lamb is unlikely to return to our screens as he retires from acting following Gavin and Stacey's farewell.
The last ever Gavin and Stacey episode aired at Christmas, dubbed The Finale, and proved an emotional one as we said goodbye to the beloved characters.
However, it turns out fans will have to let go of more than just the Shipmans, as Larry, 77, admitted that it will be his last major TV role.
Focusing on his new novel, the EastEnders legend revealed he would consider small roles just to 'keep my face in' but he's stepping firmly out of the spotlight.
Speaking of his time as Mick Shipman, father to central character Gavin and a fan favourite, Larry told the MailOnline: You get so involved with these characters that they become your favourite at that time.
'They are the focus of your life, but to finish up in my 70s playing a character like Mick who is beloved by millions of people, you have to give the writers credit… at this stage in my career Mick is the closest to my heart.'
During the sitcom's run, Larry was praised for his natural, playful chemistry with on-screen wife Alison Steadman (Pam) as well as iconic moments — who could forget when Mick was 'on the telly'.
Written by Ruth Jones and James Corden, the sitcom became a cultural icon and ran in total from 2007 to 2024, with extended breaks between specials.
Gavin and Stacey ran for 22 episodes, comprised of three series and three Christmas specials, with each member of the core cast appearing in every single one.
The show was set against the backdrop of a long-distance romance between Gavin (Mathew Horne), who lived in Essex and Barry Island's Stacey (Joanna Page).
However, it quickly developed into far more than this as a complex relationship between Nessa (Ruth) and Smithy (James) became the central thread.
From mysterious fishing trips to unforgettable neighbours — both in the form of Pete (Adrian Philip Scarborough) and Dawn (Julia Davis), as well as the late Margaret John as Doris — the show was bursting with laughs.
A mind-boggling 12.3 million viewers tuned in on Christmas Day to watch the end of this 20-year journey, breaking its own 2019 viewership record.

Alongside his role as Mick, Larry is well known for his turn in EastEnders as the devious Archie Mitchell and numerous other TV appearances over six decades. More Trending
'I have had a very fortunate career; I've done so much that I am really proud of that maybe not so many people know,' he continued.
'If you have been through a life in entertainment and people don't all know you to suddenly where pretty much everybody knows you as a character… I find it's a reward, it's better to be known than unknown as far as I'm concerned.
'Particularly if you are known as a character that people really love… what a way to finish your working life.'

Princess Charlotte, 10, breaks from tradition with sweet make-up nod to Diana

Wimbledon welcomed Prince William and Kate Middleton, along with their eldest children Prince George and Princess Charlotte, into the royal box on Centre Court earlier today Princess Charlotte has made a sweet reference to her grandmother, the late Diana, Princess of Wales, at Wimbledon. The royal box at Wimbledon hosted Prince William, Princess Kate and their eldest two children at the men's singles final this afternoon. They were among the guests at Centre Court for the final day of the tennis tournament. Prince William and Princess Kate, both 43, were seated on the front row of the box on Centre Court with Prince George, 11, and Princess Charlotte, 10, earlier. They then watched as reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz competed against rival tennis player Jannik Sinner for the title. ‌ The family were spotted at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London. Princess Charlotte, who is third in line to the British throne, has attracted some attention over her choice of makeup, with her nails having been painted pink ahead of the visit. ‌ Her choice of nail polish was on display at times as she watched matches on the court, including when Princess Charlotte covered her mouth. The colour was also visible when she held a fan amid the heatwave this weekend. Princess Charlotte's bright nails could be seen as her breaking from tradition, given previous speculation, though that doesn't appear to be the case. There's been speculation over the years that members of the Royal Family are encouraged to wear neutral colours and pale shades. ‌ Commentators have shared their thoughts on the situation in the past. Richard Fitzwilliams once told MailOnline: "[They] are encouraged to use neutral, understated colours for their nails." It's been described as a "rule" and a "protocol" in the past, though it's thought that there isn't actually a ban or a formal rule on any colour or shade of nail polish. Princess Charlotte's mother, Princess Kate, has herself opted for bold colours on occasion, for example, and pink isn't thought to be prohibited either. ‌ Queen Elizabeth was said to have worn one shade of pink nail polish for over 30 years. The late monarch reportedly favoured the brand Essie's Ballet Slippers shade after first wearing the colour, described as "pale pink", since 1989. The choice of colour by Princess Charlotte could be seen as a tribute to her late grandmother, Diana, who had been known to sport pink outfits. Pink was her "favourite" colour, according to the likes of British Vogue. ‌ The exhibition Princess Diana: Accredited Access, which had been on display in London last year, suggested similarly in a post shared on social media in 2023. Alongside photos of Princess Diana in pink, it described the colour as "nurturing". The post shared by the exhibition on Instagram read: "Princess Diana's favourite color was … PINK! Pink is a nurturing, playful, and nostalgic color that takes people back to their childhoods and can also represent universal love and friendship."

Simon Heath, who heads up World Productions, believes it's time viewers learnt more about the 21 victims of the IRA attack. 5 Six men from Northern Ireland served 16 years in prison after being wrongly convicted for the bombing in 1975. They became known as the Birmingham Six. The new drama will focus on the lives of the victims and their loved ones who have campaigned for justice. Brummie Simon said: 'Everyone knows about the Birmingham Six, but the families of the 21 victims still don't know who planted the bombs. 'They don't get the publicity they deserve. But there's a script and we're going to try. 'I just want to support the city. 'I don't think it has had a fair crack of the whip.' He said: 'I came back and it hit me so hard that I'm not still out there doing it. I think I want to do nature stuff for the rest of my life, in any sort of capacity. 'Any trip I do or TV show, I hope it has a nature element in it, because that's what I'm happy doing. 'I feel connected to what we actually are, just creatures of Earth, without sounding cheesy. Gavin & Stacey star announces retirement after finale 'what a way to finish your working life'

Gavin & Stacey star announces retirement after finale 'what a way to finish your working life' Larry Lamb has announced he is retiring from acting after starring in the Gavin & Stacey Christmas finale Larry Lamb, 77, has revealed his intention to retire from acting for good, following his final appearance as Mick Shipman in the Gavin & Stacey Christmas special that captured millions of viewers on Christmas Day. The veteran actor expressed his joy at concluding his distinguished career with a role in the beloved BBC series. He shared his contentment with ending on a high note, stating he's ready to pass on the 'bigger roles' to others. ‌ During his noteworthy career spanning six decades, Larry became familiar to audiences as both the endearing Mick in the Ruth Jones and James Corden crafted sitcom and the notorious Archie Mitchell in EastEnders. ‌ Despite his variety of parts over the years, Larry holds his portrayal of Mick in Gavin and Stacey closest to his heart. Talking about his career, he told the Daily Mail: "You get so involved with these characters that they become your favourite at that time, they are the focus of your life, but to finish up in my 70s playing a character like Mick who is beloved by millions of people, you have to give the writers credit... at this stage in my career Mick is the closest to my heart." Larry Lamb has announced his plans to step back from acting (Image: Daily Mirror ) He also reflected on his vibrant acting journey: "I have had a very fortunate career; I've done so much that I am really proud of that maybe not so many people know. I have worked at the Royal Shakespeare company, the National Theatre, I have been in 12 West End shows, I have done all the principal fringe theatres in London, on Broadway, I have been very lucky and now I am quite happy to let someone else play the big roles," reports the Mirror. Article continues below Larry expressed that many people are unaware of the diversity in his acting career. "If you have been through a life in entertainment and people don't all know you to suddenly where pretty much everybody knows you as a character... I find it's a reward, it's better to be known than unknown as far as I'm concerned. Particularly if you are known as a character that people really love... what a way to finish your working life." Larry had a reunion with the Gavin & Stacey cast at the Bafta Awards in May this year, where they were tipped to win the Memorable TV Moment award. However, they were narrowly beaten by Chris McCausland on Strictly Come Dancing, who performed a 'blackout dance' with the lights dimmed. ‌ Gavin and Stacey: The Finale (Image: BBC ) Gavin & Stacey picked up a nomination for the moment Smithy asks Larry's character Mick for his opinion before deciding not to marry girlfriend Sonia. Larry revealed that Ruth Jones had asked him to speak on behalf of the actors and crew if they had won the award. ‌ After fans finally got to watch the highly anticipated finale, Larry admitted he was 'relieved' it was over. He said: "In a funny, sad sort of way I'm relieved that it's finished because in the end people were desperate to see the end of it, and then to know that the whole thing's all been wrapped up, the story's told, and it's had its life. Gavin & Stacey: The Finale moment where Mick stands up in the church and Smithy realises he cannot marry Sonia Article continues below "You know, that's what I like about it – we can all sit back and say this is a completed story." The show's Christmas 2024 finale episode saw Neil 'Smithy' Smith, played by co-writer James Corden, finally decide to marry Vanessa 'Nessa' Jenkins, played by fellow co-writer Ruth Jones, after leaving Sonia (Laura Aikman) at the altar. Prior to the final episode, the show spanned for three series following the lives of Essex-born Gavin and his Welsh wife Stacey and their friends and family, after they first met on work phone calls.
