Stealing display speaker: Man gets six months

Kota Kinabalu: A 34-year-old undocumented man was sentenced to six months' jail by the Magistrate's Court here, Monday, for stealing a RM1,699 worth of display speaker from a retail outlet. Hasanal Ismail pleaded guilty before Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin to committing the offence on July 6, this year, at 6.14pm, at the EWT Technology store, on the second floor of Suria Sabah Shopping Mall. The charge, under Section 380 of the Penal Code, carries a jail term of up to 10 years, and a possible fine, on conviction. The facts of the case, presented by the prosecution, stated that the incident came to light when the store owner lodged a police report at 12.41pm on July 8, stating that a unit of the Marshall Middleton display speaker had gone missing and was believed to have been stolen. Investigations revealed that on July 6, at 7pm, while the complainant was in the store's office, an employee named Bing alerted him that the speaker was missing from the display shelf. The complainant then reviewed the store's CCTV footage, which showed an unidentified man cutting the cable securing the speaker and placing the item into a shopping bag before walking out of the premises. The act was captured at 6.14pm on July 6. Unrepresented, Hasanal requested for a lenient sentence while the prosecution called for a deterrent sentence. The court ordered Hasanal to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest and be referred to the Immigration Department thereafter. In another case, a 26-year-old unemployed man was charged with disposing of stolen jewellery. Md Shah Rizz Mali pleaded not guilty to committing the offence involving a gold bangle worth RM5,178 belonging to one Chua So Ting on May 31, this year, at 1.14pm, at a jewellery store in Suria Sabah here. Md Shah was charged under Section 414 of the Penal Code. Inspector Yusdi Basri, who prosecuted, informed the court that the offence was non-bailable but proposed bail be set at RM7,000 if the court decided to allow it. Counsel Lim Chun Yuan, representing Shah, applied for a lower bail amount, citing unemployment. The court fixed Sept 11 for pre-trial case management (PTCM) and released the accused on a bail of RM1,600 in two sureties with the additional condition to report to the Manggatal Police Station once a month. Meanwhile, a 20-year-old jobless man was charged with attempted theft. Undocumented Haikal Alez claimed trial to attempting to steal two compressor fan blades, a compressor cover plate, six pieces of copper pipe, a roll of electrical wire and two units of pliers belonging to Bafang Industrial Sdn Bhd at Bandar Sierra, in Manggatal, on July 13, at 6.30pm. He was charged under Section 379, read with Section 511, of the Penal Code. DOE intensifies patrols, drone surveillance to fight open burning and haze
KUALA LUMPUR: As a proactive measure, the Department of Environment (DOE) has intensified ground patrols and physical monitoring in fire-prone areas, particularly agricultural lands, peatlands, bush areas, abandoned plantations and landfills identified as high-risk. DOE director-general Datuk Wan Abdul Latiff Wan Jaffar said the department has been conducting patrols and enforcement operations to prevent open burning, which contributes to haze, especially during the current hot and dry spell. "Since July 8, 2025, the delegation of authority to various enforcement agencies has come into effect. This strategic initiative is aimed at strengthening enforcement actions on the ground, particularly in addressing the issue of open burning, which contributes to haze situations. "This delegation of authority allows swift, integrated and more comprehensive actions to be implemented quickly by the relevant agencies," he said in a statement yesterday. As of July 21, 2025, the DOE had conducted 4,121 ground patrols and 640 drone surveillance operations. Enforcement actions included 58 directives, 27 court proceedings and 59 compounds issued against parties found to have committed open burning offences this year. Wan Abdul Latiff said that for improved preparedness and coordination, the National Open Burning Action Plan and the National Haze Action Plan were activated on Feb 26 to streamline agency responses nationwide. "In addition, joint patrols and monitoring efforts are also being conducted with strategic partner agencies such as the Civil Defence Force (CDF) and other enforcement agencies at the state and district levels," he said. He urged the public not to engage in any form of open burning, particularly for agricultural purposes such as land clearing, waste disposal or use of abandoned land. "Stern action will be taken against individuals or parties found to be in violation of Section 29A of the Environmental Quality Act 1974. Offenders convicted of open burning can be fined up to RM1 million or imprisoned for up to five years, or both. "In addition, a compound of up to 50 per cent of the maximum fine may be imposed for each offence," he said. "At the same time, all operators of industries such as quarries, palm oil mills, premix plants and other industrial sectors are required to ensure their air pollution control systems are functioning properly. Emissions from chimneys must be constantly monitored and controlled to prevent air pollution that could affect public health," he said. He added that the DOE remained committed to enhancing monitoring and enforcement efforts, while collaborating with stakeholders to maintain national air quality standards. Kelantan cops stand firm, gay gathering raid not linked to health programme
KOTA BARU: Kelantan police have stood by their earlier statement that the gathering in Kemumin here, which was raided last month, was not related to any health programme but was instead a social event involving members of the gay community. State police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said that, based on intelligence gathering and public interviews, the Kelantan Police Task Force found that invitations to the gathering had been sent through specific WhatsApp groups. "Investigations showed that the invitations to the programme did not mention any involvement or organisation by official bodies such as non-governmental organisations (NGOs), health clinics, or the Health Ministry. "There was also no information indicating that the programme had received approval or was being monitored by any authorised party," Yusoff said in a statement late last night. On the day of the raid, Yusoff said the police Task Force had been monitoring the venue since 5pm, as the event was scheduled to take place between 8pm and 11pm, according to the invitation. He added that at around 8pm, the number of attendees had increased to about 100 people, who were observed dining and engaging in casual conversation. "By around 11pm, the majority of attendees had left the premises. The raiding team took precautionary measures and only conducted the operation at around 1am to ensure it proceeded smoothly without posing any risk to public safety. "During the raid, police found 20 men at the premises, and they admitted to being part of the gay community. "It was also established during the raid that no representatives from NGOs or any government health agencies, including the Health Ministry, were present." He added that documentation conducted on the 20 men revealed that 18 were from Kelantan, one from Perak, and one from Besut, Terengganu, who is a student at a higher learning institution in Kelantan. "Checks on their mobile phones revealed that three of them possessed pornographic videos involving same-sex activities. Some also admitted to having engaged in same-sex activities. "Police also found hundreds of condoms and several boxes of HIV medication in one of the rooms," he said. Yusoff stressed that police action was based solely on verified intelligence and lawful evidence, with no intent of discrimination. "Our responsibility is to maintain public order and safeguard the moral values of society. I hope this explanation will dispel confusion and speculation circulating online. "The public is urged not to spread unverified information and to continue cooperating with the authorities to preserve harmony in the state," he said. It was reported that three men, including two students from tertiary education institutions, were fined a total of RM11,000 by the magistrate's court on Sunday for possessing obscene images and videos. The trio was among those arrested by police during the raid at a house in Kemumin last month.

Doctor Arrested Again Over Molest Claim By Another Patient
BALIK PULAU, July 22 (Bernama) -- A doctor has been arrested again for investigations into an alleged molestation of a female patient at a private clinic in Bayan Baru here. Barat Daya police chief ACP Sazalee Adam said the 43-year-old male doctor was detained at the Barat Daya police headquarters (IPD) at 8 pm yesterday after being asked to attend a query into the case. "Police received a report regarding the incident from a woman who claimed that at 11.46 am on June 29, she had sought treatment at a private clinic in Bayan Baru for abdominal pains. "While in the examination room, the doctor treating her told her to take off her clothes and touched her breasts. The victim, who was unhappy with the conduct, filed a police report regarding the incident on July 18," he said when contacted by Bernama today. He said following the detention of the doctor, who works at a hospital in the state, police also seized a mobile phone belonging to him to help in the investigation. Meanwhile, acting Penang police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin confirmed with Bernama that the doctor was the same medical officer who was previously arrested for indecent behaviour towards female patients in the state. He said the man has been remanded for three days until July 23 to assist in investigations under Section 354 of the Penal Code. Previous media reports said a doctor was detained three times after allegations of indecent behaviour at a hospital and two private clinics in the Northeast district involving three female victims. The man was investigated then under Section 509 of the Penal Code for insulting modesty and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955 for indecent conduct.
