Unbelievable twist as aspiring businessman, 21, is stabbed to death in the driveway of suburban home while girlfriend watched on in horror - as cops reach a terrifying conclusion
Luke Manassa, 21, and his girlfriend arrived at a home on Driftway Drive in Pemulwuy, greater western Sydney, on June 26 where he was allegedly ambushed and attacked.
Two unknown men, dressed in dark clothing and disguises, allegedly stabbed the 21-year-old entrepreneur with hunting-style knives, NSW Police said.
It is alleged Mr Manassa then got back into his car and drove a short distance before being overcome by his injuries.
Homicide Squad detectives have charged two teenagers over the fatal stabbing of a man in Pemulwuy last week.
The squad's commander, Detective Superintendent Joseph Doueihi told reporters on Friday it was believed to be a botched killing.
'We believe that these these young offenders were contracted by someone to conduct this killing,' he said, adding that the alleged intent was murder.
'We don't know who those people are, or if they're involved with any particular organized crime group.'
'I can indicate that, by the way this offense was executed by these two young persons, it was very amateurish, which certainly assisted our investigation,' he said.
Emergency services were called to the home at about 10.45pm that evening regarding reports that a man had been stabbed.
NSW Ambulance paramedics treated Mr Manassa but he could not be revived and died at the scene.
Strike Force Hickety was established and, on Thursday at about 6am, detectives carries out searches in South Penrith, Mt Druitt, and Woodcroft.
In South Penrith, police arrested a 17-year-old boy who was taken to Penrith Police Station.
He has been charged with murder and failure to comply with digital evidence access order direction.
The teen was on bail at the time and police allege that, at the time of the incident, he had a curfew in place.
Officers also arrested a 16-year-old boy in Mt Druitt, who was taken to Mt Druitt Police Station and charged with murder.
Both are linked to western Sydney street gangs and were refused bail. They are due to appear in children's court on Friday.
During the search warrant in Woodcroft, police seized what they will allege was used as the getaway car from a separate residence. Two knives have also been seized.
The investigation continues. No motive has been established so far.
Det. Supt. Doueihi said Mr Manassa was not adversely known to the NSW Police but the occupants of the home were. The young man would visit there occasionally.
'This could well be a case of mistaken identity,' he said.
'It's probably too early at this stage to absolutely confirm that Luke was a mistaken identity, but (it's) certainly heading towards that.'
Mr Manassa's family own a demolition company and the aspiring businessman had studied property economics at UTS.
He described himself as a young businessman on a podcast last year and discussed his entrepreneurial endeavors and 'side hustles' like selling designer sneakers.
'I knew what I wanted to do for a long time. I wasn't concerned with much else,' he said.
Basketball club Inner West Bulls also said their thoughts were with Ms Manassa's family.
'We remember Luke not only for his talent, but for the kindness, energy, and brotherhood he brought to the team,' the Facebook post said.
'He was a valued member of the Bulls - strong, kind, and respected by all who knew him. We will carry your memory on the court, always.
'You will be deeply missed by the entire Bulls community.'
It comes nearly two months after innocent plumber John Versace, 23, was shot dead as he got out of his ute at his family's home in Dalton Avenue in Condell Park, in Sydney's south-west, about 10.30pm on May 19.
The shooter unloaded about 10 rounds of bullets, with Mr Versace suffering four gunshot wounds to his chest and stomach. He died at the scene.
Det. Supt. Doueihi said on Friday that Mr Manassa's killing was indicative of violence on Sydney's streets.
'More broadly, we're seeing some very young people being involved in very horrific crimes across Sydney,' he said.

A cannabis addict who smoked five joints the day before he shook his baby daughter to death has been jailed for life. Thomas Holford, 25, killed his five-week-old daughter Everleigh Stroud by shaking her with such 'excessive and severe' force she was left with 'catastrophic' brain and bone injuries. Everleigh had been left alone in her father's care on the night of April 20, 2021 and was 'only just' breathing when her grandmother, Kelly Stroud, called an ambulance the next morning. Holford was 'under the influence' of cannabis at the time of the shaking, and later lied to police about his drug use, having smoked at least five joints to celebrate '420' the previous day, which the court had heard he agreed was a 'big day for cannabis smokers'. While his baby was rushed to Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital in Margate, Kent, on April 21, he showed 'little emotion' and continued to download and play games on his phone, jurors heard. Text messages shown to jurors suggested that he tried to buy weed from a contact known as 'Milo' because he knew he was looking after his daughter. He sent a text which read: 'Could you strap me anything, as I've got the little one on my own tonight. Going to be f****** stressful.' On Thursday, Holford, of Ramsgate, was found unanimously guilty of murder and actual bodily harm of his daughter by a Canterbury Crown Court jury. Today, Mr Justice Michael Fordham sentenced Holford to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 16 years and told the court that he had 'robbed' his former partner and her family of 'any type of deep happiness' for the rest of their lives. The judge said: 'Overnight on 20th to 21st of April 2021 when you were just 20 years old you shook your five-week-old baby daughter Everleigh. 'That act of shaking caused severe and irreversible brain injuries, she died 13 months later as a result of those injuries. 'The jury were sure that at the moment of shaking Everleigh you intended to cause her really serious injury.' Along with brain injuries, Everleigh also had bone fractures, bruising to her face, and atrophy to her eyes leading to her going blind, having spent the night before in her father's care, the court heard. Everleigh, who was born on March 13 2021, spent more than a year in hospital before she died aged 14 months on May 27 2022. Mr Justice Fordham continued: 'Kelly Stroud has described in her statement the impacts of what you did, how your actions denied Everleigh a life, how your actions denied a lifetime of hopes and dreams to Casey, a wonderful young mum who never gave up fighting for her daughter.' He added: 'Your actions robbed the Stroud family of any type of deep happiness leaving a grief on all members of the family for the rest of their lives.' While giving evidence, Holford told jurors he had at least five joints on April 20 2021, before being left in charge of Everleigh that evening. 'You were under the influence of cannabis when you injured Everleigh, I am sure that is right,' said Mr Justice Fordham. When police arrived at his address in Ramsgate, where Holford, then 20, lived with his then 16-year-old girlfriend and her parents, they discovered a cannabis grinder and joint butts next to a milk bottle in his bedroom. A witness statement written by Everleigh's grandmother, Ms Stroud, and summarised in court heard how hard it had been to face her death. 'The shock was something that they have not experienced before, albeit they had a short period of denial and desperately searched for answers,' said prosecutor Eloise Marshall KC. The statement read: 'In a blink of an eye our world came crashing down in the most heartbreaking and traumatic way.' Holford also received a two-year concurrent prison sentence for actual bodily harm of Everleigh's anus which happened the same night. In the sentencing hearing, Ms Marshall said: 'The actual bodily harm undermines any suggestion that this was one single act born of one motivation and the motivation was described by the defence as perhaps frustration or flash of anger. 'We say that suggestion is undermined by the actual bodily harm.' During the trial Holford also admitted he had 'manipulated' his girlfriend's family into taking care of his cannabis for him and allowing him to smoke it. While in the witness box, he often answered questions to the effect of being unsure or not remembering what had happened the night he attacked Everleigh. 'The jury were sure that whatever your memory then or now you shook her meaning to cause really serious injury,' said Mr Justice Fordham. A horrified father has admitted he had grave fears about his son's 'weird and creepy' childcare worker three years before the alleged monster was arrested for sickening crimes against children. But the devastated dad told Daily Mail Australia he didn't raise the alarm for fear of being branded homophobic for speaking out against Joshua Dale Brown, 26. The man's child was two years old when he was placed in Brown's care at Creative Garden Early Learning Centre Point Cook, in Melbourne 's west, for a year in 2022. Brown has since been charged with more than 70 child sex offences, including the sexual penetration of a child and producing child abuse material. Brown was described as socially withdrawn and unsettling around children by the father-of-one, who said he always had a bad feeling about Brown. He said Brown would regularly wear inappropriate 'skin-tight jeans and leather boots' to work in the childcare centre and went out of his way to avoid the boy's dad. The father said Brown also refused to make eye contact and dodged any conversation with the parent. 'I would try and interact with Josh when I dropped my son off and chat, and he would always turn his head and never look me in the eye,' he said. 'It was strange. 'He acted shady, would just look away or at the floor, and my son never wanted to go to him, but he would run to the other educators. 'I spoke to my wife about it and said something is not right here. 'But I was worried if I followed up, I'd be "that guy" and labelled homophobic, which I am not.' 'I had no proof and what could I say? "He wears skin tight skinny jeans and leather boots with one-inch heels and looks like he is going clubbing, not to work?" 'I didn't want to be that person.' The family was among hundreds who received a text from the Department of Health and Victoria Police on Tuesday about the investigation into 'alleged incidents in childcare centres'. 'We understand this may be upsetting, and we want to assure you that help is available,' it read. The text also explained they would receive an email with more information. 'I just thought there must have been something weird that happened in our area, but later I saw an article with Josh's name and photo,' he said. 'And bang, it was out there and I remember just thinking this can't be real. 'I messaged my wife and told her she better sit down before sending it to her and I just thought back to seeing him every morning and knowing that guy was shady.' Brown was also charged with recklessly contaminating goods to cause alarm or anxiety, which is understood to refer to the alleged contamination of food with bodily fluids. 'I know the chef who was there at that time and she had a child who was attending there too,' he added. 'She would be devastated and is an alleged victim too. So many people have got life sentences from what he has allegedly done.' Brown's charges relate to his employment at the day-care where he worked between October 2021 and February 2024, though he also worked at more than a dozen other centres across Melbourne between 2017 and 2025. Police said the alleged victims were between five months and two years of age. After the news broke and the parents of 1,200 children were urged to have them tested for infectious diseases, the dad rushed to collect his son who is still attending the same daycare. 'I picked him up on Tuesday and said, "Do you remember Josh?" and asked if he ever hurt him, and he said, "No", and I didn't want to push it any further. 'When my wife was watching the news, he said, "There is my school, oh look there is Josh" and my wife and I talked about it again and decided not to go into it with him. 'I feel like he would have said something. He is a talkative child and we also know that his behaviour didn't change either. 'He wasn't quiet around that time or not himself - he hasn't changed.' While the dad believes his family may have had a lucky escape from the alleged crimes committed against at least eight other children, he feels for the staff and other parents involved. 'I'm disgusted. How can anyone do that? What the hell goes through your head?' he said. 'I'm angry and upset and hurt - it's a rollercoaster of different emotions. 'I feel so awful for the people who have to get tested and wait for the results, and my heart goes out to the other educators.' The father said he has offered support to the women educators at the centre who he said have cared for his son 'like their own' since he was a baby. 'This is not on them. They didn't know - they are mums themselves. I have asked them if they were ever suspicious like me. 'But they just thought he was really great with the kids,' the dad said. The Victorian government is already reviewing the state's Working With Children Check system and has now ordered the early childhood regulator to investigate the conduct of the childcare operators who employed Brown. Although there have been calls to ban men from working in the industry, with a class action already underway over the allegations, the dad doesn't believe that's the answer. 'Kids benefit a lot from having another male role model in their lives,' he insisted. 'They just need to do more thorough background checks and look deeper into who these people are. 'I don't think it's appropriate to sue anyone. It's unfortunate it allegedly happened, and Josh deserves everything he gets if he is convicted. 'But there are so many other people who are struggling. They may lose their jobs, and they have families to feed too.'
