Trump's post on his Truth Social platform abruptly took that spat into the very real - and rarely publicised - sphere of nuclear forces. "Based on the highly provocative statements," Trump said he had "ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that." "Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences, I hope this will not be one of those instances," the 79-year-old Republican posted. Trump did not say in his post whether he meant nuclear-powered or nuclear-armed submarines. He also did not elaborate on the exact deployment locations, which are kept secret by the US military. But in an interview with Newsmax that aired Friday night, Trump said the submarines were "closer to Russia." "We always want to be ready. And so I have sent to the region two nuclear submarines," he said. "I just want to make sure that his words are only words and nothing more than that." An AFP analysis on Friday showed that Russian forces had launched a record number of drones at Ukraine in July. Russian attacks have killed hundreds of Ukrainian civilians since June. Putin, who has consistently rejected calls for a ceasefire, said Friday that he wants peace but that his demands for ending his nearly three-and-a-half-year invasion were "unchanged". Those demands include that Ukraine abandon territory and end ambitions to join NATO. Putin, speaking alongside Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, said Belarusian and Russian specialists "have chosen a place for future positions" of the Oreshnik missiles. Trump responded by calling Medvedev "the failed former President of Russia, who thinks he's still President." Medvedev should "watch his words," Trump posted at midnight in Washington on Wednesday. In Kyiv on Friday, residents held a day of mourning for the 31 people, including five children, killed the day before, most of whom were in a nine-storey apartment block torn open by a missile. JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) said United States (US) President Donald Trump's decisions on the reciprocal tariffs come as no surprise. On Thursday, Trump announced he was imposing 30% tariffs on South Africa, which will come into effect on 4 August. And while the ANC said it's leaving it to the government to wade through the choppy economic waters, its seecretary general, Fikile Mbalula, said the matter is definitely on the agenda. ALSO READ: DA blames Trade & International Relations ministers for unfavourable trade deal with USA 'We will, among others, discuss the implications of the tariff increase, in terms of the economic trajectory and the path forward, how it impacts our economy, and what the options [are].' Despite concerns from some, including the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Johannesburg, Mbalula insists the City of Johannesburg is and will be ready to hold the much-anticipated G20 Summit later in 2025. He has also shared his thoughts on news from the US president that he might not make it to the country to participate in the event himself. 'They've now decided to not send the head of state of America; they decided to send somebody because South Africa will hand over to the United States with regard to the G20, our government must deal with that.'

Government finalising support package for companies vulnerable to US tariffs
The government says it is finalising a support package for companies, producers and workers affected by the tariffs on South African exports to the United States (US). This as the Trump-led administration stands firm on imposing a 30% tariff on local exports. Zululand Observer reports that President Cyril Ramaphosa said, while they continue to engage the US on the subject, a support package, to be detailed at a later stage, will be in place to assist those vulnerable to the reciprocal tariffs. 'The reciprocal tariffs have been imposed by the US on a significant number of its trade partners and South Africa has not been spared. South Africa will continue negotiating with the US regarding the 30% tariff announced by the US, which will come into effect on or after 12:01 eastern daylight time, seven days after August 1,' said Ramaphosa. He said all applicable exceptions published in the previous US Executive Order are set to remain in force. These exceptions covered products such as copper, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, lumber articles, certain critical minerals, stainless steel scrap and energy and energy products. 'South Africa and US trade relations are complementary in nature, and South African exports do not pose a threat to US industry. Importantly, SA exports to the US contain inputs from the African continent and contribute to intra-Africa trade. 'South Africa will continue to pursue all diplomatic efforts to safeguard its national interests. It is important that as a country, we keep our people at work and our companies producing some of the high-quality products destined for many parts of the world,' said Ramaphosa. He said they are exploring alternative markets as part of a diversification strategy in hopes of creating resilience of the country's economy. An export support desk has also been established to provide updates on development and provide advisory services to exporters. 'The details are to be published by the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition on its website,' said Ramaphosa.
