AgustaWestland case: HC reserves order on accused Gupta's plea to quash NBW
A Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court had issued an "open ended" NBW against him in August 2020.
Gupta is alleged to have left for the UK (London) in 2019 after the federal probe agency summoned him for questioning.
An Interpol Red Notice was issued against him in August 2023.
The ED filed a supplementary chargesheet in February 2022 naming Gupta as an accused in the VVIP chopper case.
It has attached assets worth Rs 21 crore in the probe as part of two money laundering investigations against Gupta, director of real estate company MGF Developments.
The second PMLA case against is over Rs 180 crore.
According to officials, Justice Neena Bansal Krishna on Wednesday heard Gupta's plea of quashing the NBW issued against him.
The judge rejected the request of Gupta's counsel for adjourning the case and reserved the matter for judgment, they claimed.
Gupta's legal team informed the court that their client is ready to join the investigation via a video conference link and they have also moved a fresh application seeking the court's permission for allowing the same, they said.
The court observed the counsel for the petitioners have been seeking repeated adjournments in the matter and such a conduct was not expected from them, the officials claimed.
Senior advocate Vikas Pahwa, representing Gupta, argued in court that his client was unable to come to India "at this stage" owing to certain medical conditions and he was ready to join the investigation via video conferencing which is permissible in law.
He said the court reserved its verdict on the applications including the one for attending the probe virtually.
The ED has alleged that offshore entities "beneficially owned and controlled" by Gupta received "proceeds of crime" worth more than Rs 28.69 crore (Euro 1,912,000 and USD 3,457,180) in the Rs 3,600 crore AgustaWestland VVIP Choppers "scam".
In a statement issued in January, the ED had said it was "pertinent to mention that Shravan Gupta is also an accused in the ED case of AgustaWestland helicopter scandal and has fled the country." Gupta was the managing director and executive vice chairman of Emaar MGF Land Limited between 2005-2016.
It is alleged by the ED that during this time, Gupta came into contact with another accused in the case Gautam Khaitan, who later introduced him to Guido Haschke (an alleged middleman and an accused in the same case).
Gupta, as per ED's case, created offshore corporate structures to "launder" proceeds of crime generated by Khaitan and Haschke as "kickbacks" from the VVIP choppers deal.
On January 1, 2014, India scrapped the contract with Finmeccanica's British subsidiary AgustaWestland for supplying 12 AW-101 VVIP choppers to the IAF over alleged breach of contractual obligations and charges of kickbacks to the tune of Rs 423 crore paid by the firm for securing the deal.

‘ED aa gayi': Bhupesh Baghel posts as agency raids ex-Chhattisgarh CM's Bhilai home in connection with case against son
The Enforcement Directorate on Friday carried out new raids at the residence of Chaitanya Baghel, son of former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, as part of an ongoing money laundering investigation related to an alleged liquor scam, officials reported. Chaitanya Baghel's house in Bhilai town, which he shares with his father, is being searched by the ED under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) based on receipt of fresh evidence in the case, they said. Senior Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel later posted on X, revealing that the ED had arrived at his Bhilai residence on the final day of the assembly session. The federal investigation agency had previously conducted similar raids on Chaitanya Baghel in March of this year. The ED has alleged that a cartel of government officials, politicians, and liquor businessmen ran a scheme that illegally collected around ₹ 2,161 crore from the sale of liquor in the state between 2019 and 2022. The alleged scam involved manipulation of the liquor supply chain, where a cartel controlled the sale and distribution of alcohol through government-run shops. The agency has earlier conducted multiple raids, including on politicians and bureaucrats linked to the previous Congress-led government in Chhattisgarh. (This is a developing story.)

A 20-year-old girl from a small village has become the pride of Rolls-Royce! Interestingly, she couldn't even qualify for a seat through the NEET exam and then gave up the pursuit of her UPSC dream. She did not give up on herself — she went on to pursue a degree in robotics. Today, she has a job with a whopping Rs 72 lakh package! Rithuparna K S once believed her dreams had been lost—she was unable to secure a government seat through NEET and finally, she decided to let go of the dream of UPSC aspirant. What started off as a secondary plan soon transformed into her core passion. 'From day one at college, I started exploring,' she was quoted as saying to a leading daily. With energy from automation, she specialized in Robotics and Automation Engineering. After watching my seniors' work, she started to pursue projects with real work value and purpose. Rithuparna and her team created a robotic sprayer and harvester for arecanut farmers which won a gold medal and a silver medal at the INEX international conference in Goa, with entrants from countries such as Japan, Singapore, Russia, and China. She also worked on robotic surgery research at NITK Surathkal and was instrumental in the development of a mobile app for solid waste management, working closely with Mullai Muhilan MP, the Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada. Desiring an international experience, Rithuparna contacted Rolls-Royce for an internship. At the outset, the company questioned her ability to complete any work, stating that she wouldn't be able to finish even one task in a month. 'I asked them for a chance,' Rithuparna K S was quoted as saying by EconomicTimes. They had a challenge with a deadline of one month—but Rithuparna was able to complete it all in a week. Because of her efficiency, the company started assigning her projects that were even more difficult and managing an intense work-load of projects and interviews that spanned more than eight months—and while also engaged in her sixth semester of college. At times this involved working from midnight to 6 AM IST to coordinate with the work hours in the UK. In December 2024, she accepted a pre-placement offer with a package of ₹39.6 lakh per year. By April 2025, her performance and phenomenal achievements led to a revision of her offer letter for ₹72.3 lakh in a year.
