On World Environment Day, Singareni announces complete ban on plastic usage

Hyderabad, June 5 (UNI) On the occasion of World Environment Day, with the global theme 'Let's put an end to plastic pollution globally', state-owned Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) on Thursday declared a complete ban on plastic usage across all its areas, including the Hyderabad office.
Singareni Chairman and Managing Director N. Balaram made this impactful announcement, emphasising particularly that plastic bottles must not be used under any circumstances.
At a plantation drive held in the office premises at Singareni Bhavan here, Balaram stated that the company has already been undertaking various eco-friendly measures and in some areas had reduced plastic use. However, aligning with this year's global slogan, the company is now enforcing a total ban on plastic-made items like bottles, plates, and similar materials across its offices, mines, and departments.
He appealed to all officials, employees, and workers of the organisation to extend their support to this initiative and advised them to minimise the use of plastic even at home.
Balaram shared that he has personally planted over 19,000 saplings across Singareni areas out of his deep commitment to environmental conservation.
Inspired by this, the company's directors and employees have also begun actively planting trees, which he described as an encouraging development.
He urged every individual to plant at least three saplings and informed that SCCL would distribute saplings free of cost to all those interested.
He noted that three decades ago, temperatures in the Singareni regions used to rise above 50 degrees Celsius during summer. Thanks to the extensive plantation efforts by SCCL, many of these saplings have now grown into forests, helping to bring down temperatures to about 40 degrees Celsius.
In contrast, in Naini, Angul district of Odisha, where SCCL operates a coal mine, local residents have reported temperatures exceeding 50 degrees. Hence, he mentioned that Singareni is now ready to undertake large-scale plantation activities in that area as well.
The event was attended by Executive Director (Coal Movement) S.D.M. Subhani, General Manager (Marketing) N.V. Rajasekhar Rao, and other senior officials and employees from various departments.
The CMD also presented prizes to winners of the essay competition conducted on the theme of environment and distributed jute bags to all participating employees.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian arrives in Lahore as part of two-day visit to Pakistan

Tehran/Lahore, Aug 2 (UNI) Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian arrived in Lahore today, as part of his two-day visit to Pakistan where both Tehran and Islamabad will explore avenues for strengthening bilateral cooperation, reports Geo News. The Iranian president — who was welcomed in Lahore by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and PML-N President Nawaz Sharif — was accompanied by a high-level delegation, including senior ministers and other high-ranking officials. He went on to pay a visit to the mausoleum of Allama Iqbal where he received a guard of honour from personnel of the Pakistan Armed Forces. In light of his visit, security in Lahore was severely heightened, with major roads leading to the Iqbal Mausoleum and government guesthouses being placed under strict surveillance. As per his schedule, President Pezeshkian will meet President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad on Sunday. The federal capital has been adorned with welcome banners and the national flags of both countries. Speaking to reporters in Tehran ahead of his departure, Pezeshkian — who has embarked on his first official visit to Pakistan as president — had said the purpose of the visit was to enhance bilateral trade and economic cooperation between Iran and Pakistan. "The objective of this trip is to boost commercial and economic ties," he stated. The Iranian president added that matters related to border security and regional peace would also be discussed during the visit. "We believe that cross-border markets and connectivity can open new avenues for mutual cooperation," he remarked. The Iranian President further expressed hope that bilateral trade between the two countries could be raised to $10 billion, highlighting Iran's active interest in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a key component of the One Belt, One Road (OBOR) initiative. 'The OBOR project offers Iran an opportunity to connect with Europe,' he noted, adding 'Attempts to undermine the Islamic unity between Pakistan and Iran will fail.'

Fitch revises GDP forecast, believes limited tariff impact on India

New Delhi, Aug 2 (UNI) Fitch Ratings Inc. revised India's GDP forecast to 6.3 per cent for the current fiscal year and termed 'higher US tariffs will have a limited direct impact' in its India Corporate Credit Trends report. Initially, the agency predicted a forecast of 6.4 per cent in its Global Economic Outlook Report in April. Fitch Ratings Inc. is an American credit rating agency that oversees the creditworthiness of debt issuers. Fitch noted, 'We expect India's GDP growth of 6.3 per cent and robust infrastructure spending to underpin healthy demand for cement and building materials, electricity, petroleum products, steel, engineering and construction (E&C) companies in FY26.' The report also highlighted that funding needs in FY26 are supported by the adequate cash buffers at many of the corporations. Also noted the country's healthy banking conditions, the likelihood of possible interest rate cuts in 2025 amid robust economic growth. The Fitch report also noted that higher US tariffs will have a direct, limited impact due to the generally low to moderate US export exposure of Indian corporates. 'We forecast median EBIDTA net leverage to fall 3.1 times in FY26 as EBIDTA growth offsets high capex-driven negative cash flow in many sectors,' the report added. UNI SAS GNK
