Steelers HC Mike Tomlin drops hilarious Tomlinism on Aaron Rodgers at training camp

USA Todaya day ago
The Tomlinisms are alive and well at Steelers training camp.
At Thursday's press conference, HC Mike Tomlin addressed how the Steelers will maintain their identity and culture after bringing in an accomplished veteran like Aaron Rodgers — dropping a hilarious one-liner for reporters.
"When in Rome, he's going to be Roman," Tomlin said. "And it's our job to teach how we do things."
Tomlin made it clear that he doesn't run from the challenge of educating new arrivals on what it means to be a Steeler — he embraces it, stating that the players have been receptive to learning the Pittsburgh way.
The longtime head coach will tell you himself — talk only gets you so far. And with a completely overhauled roster, the Steelers' opportunity to silence the doubters and make a deep playoff run feels inevitable.

Steelers announce Ben Roethlisberger, Joey Porter, Maurkice Pouncey to join Hall of Honor

The Pittsburgh Steelers are honoring three core members of the organization this December. The team will induct quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, center Maurkice Pouncey and linebacker Joey Porter into the Steelers Hall of Honor as part of the Class of 2025. Roethlisberger, who was under center for the Steelers from 2004 to 2021, spent more than a decade as the face of the franchise. The six-time Pro Bowler led Pittsburgh to two Super Bowls, in 2006 and 2009. Roethlisberger will be inducted alongside Pouncey, his longtime center from 2010 to 2020. Porter, who played for the Steelers from 1999-2006, played with Roethlisberger for the team's Super Bowl XL win. The inductees will be celebrated with an on-field ceremony on Dec. 15, as Pittsburgh hosts the Miami Dolphins for Monday Night Football. Longtime Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, who coached both Roethlisberger and Pouncey, congratulated the trio in a video posted to social media, calling them "a small and really special group." "I can't wait to have you guys back," Tomlin said. "Well deserved." Porter's son, Joey Porter Jr., also took to social media to congratulate his father. Porter Jr., a cornerback, was selected by the Steelers in the 2023 draft, and has spent the past three years with the team. "Shout out to my dad for being a part of this year's class. It was an honor and a privilege to watch you play throughout your career, and see you put on for Steeler Nation," Porter Jr. said. "Thank you for showing me what it means to be a Steeler." The Steelers Hall of Honor, which was established in 2017, has honored players, coaches and contributors every year. Roethlisberger, Pouncey and Porter will join the 58 people who have already been inducted into the hall over the past eight years. In order to be recognized, former players must have been retired for at least three seasons and have to have played for the team for at least three seasons. (As a result, this is the first year that Roethlisberger could be honored.) Former coaches and contributors had to have made "significant contributions to the team and community." Three members of the Rooney family, who own the team, are in the Hall of Honor, including team founder Art Rooney Sr.

Did NY Giants' QB Narrative Shift Russell Wilson's Thinking?

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Since there were a lot of questions regarding the starting quarterback position for the New York Giants, the team's head coach, Brian Daboll, didn't want the conversation to be steered in the wrong direction for much longer. Before the Giants kicked off training camp, Daboll made it clear that Russell Wilson was the team's starter. Wilson didn't seem to need that assurance throughout the offseason, since he signed a one-year deal with the Giants, and that remains the case this week. Whether Wilson was named the starter—or placed in a quarterback battle for the spot—the approach remains the same. "I'm always just focused on being the best version of me every day," Wilson told reporters in response to Daboll's comments. "For me, my mentality is always to be the best in the world. I don't know anything else other than that. I'm just trying to have that mentality and helping our football team win. I think that's the big thing that I'm really focused on is elevating our practice, elevating our play, elevating our mentality, and having the championship mentality daily. I think that we're on that path, but we've got to keep doing it daily, and it starts with me and my mindset, my energy, and the way I step into the huddle every day. That's important." Russell Wilson #3 of the New York Giants in action during training camp at Quest Diagnostics Training Center on July 24, 2025 in East Rutherford, New been in the league long enough to know what it takes to lead a team at the highest level. Since landing on the Seattle Seahawks in 2012 as a third-round pick, Wilson has been in the shoes of a Jaxson Dart, who is going through his rookie season as a pro. But he was never one to have to hold the clipboard where he was drafted. It wasn't until recent years that Wilson's status as a starting veteran came into question. Two seasons with the Denver Broncos and a one-year stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers have resulted in the quarterback fighting against a negative narrative about what he can bring to the table at this stage of his career. Last season, Wilson got the chance to play in just 11 games for the Steelers. He threw 336 passes, completing 64 percent of those attempts for 2,482 yards and 16 touchdowns. Wilson maintained the starting position in the playoffs, appearing in just one game. He tossed for 270 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions in the Wild Card loss. The Steelers have moved on to their next veteran, adding Aaron Rodgers. Wilson moved to the Big Apple to play for the Giants. While his leash might be short, the veteran has the support of his coaching staff and organization as the starter for the time being. Steelers rookie Kaleb Johnson reveals hidden part of his game at training camp

Rookie RB Kaleb Johnson has been a human highlight reel so far at training camp — and he appreciates the opportunity to showcase some of the more underrated aspects of his game. Coming out of college, there were elements of Johnson's skill set that flew under the radar — and it's those very tools that have caught the attention of fans in Latrobe. The Steelers rookie believes his overlooked abilities are helping him build trust with his quarterbacks — especially in the passing game. "To be honest, I feel like the hidden part of my game was my speed and my pass-catching ability," Johnson told reporters on Saturday. "And I feel like I can really contribute with my catching ability and protections, stuff like that. So, with [Aaron Rodgers] and just all the quarterbacks, I feel like they're trusting me now and trusting that I can make really good plays from a pass perspective." Drafted with the 83rd overall pick in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft, Johnson could see a massive workload right out of the gate — as Najee Harris' Steel City departure left Pittsburgh without a de facto RB1. Johnson could form one of the best one-two punches with RB Jaylen Warren in the rushing attack this season — but the success may fall on whether the offensive line can take the next step in 2025.
