Fake Judges, Court Hearings: UP Man Loses Rs 1 Crore In Digital Arrest Fraud
Uttar Pradesh Police on Wednesday arrested seven men who allegedly impersonated officials from the ED and the CBI to "digitally arrest" a Shahjahanpur resident and swindle more than Rs one crore through a fabricated online court proceeding, an official said.
The gang's modus operandi involved convincing the victim, 60-year-old Sharad Chand, that he was under investigation for an alleged illegal transaction of Rs 2.8 crore, the officer said.
The fraudsters allegedly first contacted him via phone on May 6, posing as ED and CBI officers. Then they escalated the deception by impersonating a judge and conducting fake virtual hearings through WhatsApp for almost a month, according to the police.
Digital arrest is a term used in cyber frauds where victims are falsely told they are under surveillance or legal custody through digital means. They are often isolated via continuous video or call surveillance by fraudsters posing as officials, and manipulated into following instructions without alerting others - often leading to extortion or fraud.
Shahjahanpur Superintendent of Police Rajesh Dwivedi told PTI that during these "virtual hearings", fake lawyers and judges allegedly intimidated Chand, ultimately coercing him into transferring Rs 1.04 crore across 40 bank accounts belonging to nine alleged "advocates." The victim, associated with an NGO, did not inform anyone at the time of the "digital arrest" but reported the matter to the police once he realised that he had been conned.
During the investigation, police discovered suspicious transactions of Rs nine crore in a bank account linked to the case. That account is also under scrutiny, Dwivedi said.
Those arrested have been identified as Sachin, Prashant, Gautam Singh, Sandeep Kumar, Syed Saif, Aryan Sharma, and Pawan Yadav - all aged between 20 and 28 years.
They have been booked under sections 318 (cheating), 319 (cheating by impersonation), 204 (impersonating a government official) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and sections 66(c) and 66(d) of the IT Act. All have been sent to jail, the police added.
Uttar Pradesh Police has cautioned citizens against cyber frauds like digital arrest and asked them to report any such experiences to their nearest police station or on the dedicated helpline number 1530.

Dhami leads with bold reforms: UCC and anti-cheating laws set national model; reservation restored for statehood activists
Pushkar Singh Dhami, Uttarakhand's Chief Minister, has garnered national recognition for his decisive leadership. He implemented the Uniform Civil Code and stringent laws against cheating in exams and forced religious conversions. Dhami's administration also reinstated job reservations for statehood movement activists and enacted measures to recover damages from rioters, significantly impacting governance and law enforcement in the state. NEW DELHI: Pushkar Singh Dhami , the youngest Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, has established a strong record of taking bold decisions and implementing them effectively. In his four-year tenure so far, he has made a mark at the national level through landmark moves like the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), the anti-cheating law, and the anti-conversion law. He has also gained recognition within the state as a people-centric leader by reintroducing reservation in government jobs for Uttarakhand statehood movement activists. Anti-Cheating Law To break the nexus of cheating mafias in government recruitment exams, the Dhami government enforced a strict law from February 2023 titled The Uttarakhand Competitive Examination (Measures for Prevention and Prevention of Unfair Means in Recruitment) Act . This law has become a model for the country. Since its implementation, recruitment exams in Uttarakhand have been conducted transparently and on time. Earlier, recruitment processes took an average of two to three years to complete; now they are being concluded within a year. The law prescribes life imprisonment for those found guilty of leaking exam papers, facilitating cheating, or using unfair means. It also includes provisions for fines up to Rs 10 crore and the confiscation of the property of offenders. Punjab and Haryana chief justice recuses from Gurugram builder trial
Punjab and Haryana high court chief justice Sheel Nagu on Thursday recused himself from hearing a petition filed by a Gurugram builder that sought to quash an FIR in a corruption case. Gavel and law books (Getty Images/iStockphoto/ Representational image) The move came after the petitioner's lawyer raised objection to the chief justice continuing to hear the case. Chief justice Nagu on May 10 in an administrative order had withdrawn the case from another judge who was set to pronounce the final judgment and listed it before his own bench. The withdrawal was prompted by 'oral and written complaints', chief justice Nagu had said. The petition filed by real estate firm M3M's director Roop Bansal seeks to quash an FIR filed by the Haryana anti-corruption bureau in April 2023 against himself and others including former special CBI court judge Sudhir Parmar. During subsequent hearings, the petitioner's counsel objected to the withdrawal of the case but the chief justice had maintained that the decision was taken to 'preserve the dignity and honour of the institution' and to 'protect the reputation' of the judge. On Thursday, appearing for the builder, senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi submitted that he had instructions from his client to 'raise objection' to the chief justice continuing to hear the case. 'It is our duty to advise the court on principle. There are innumerable examples where the chief justice of India has refused to deal with the case on the judicial side when it has dealt with it on the administrative side. ..best example is also administrative judges who never deal with the cases which they have dealt on administrative duty,' Singhvi said. On the other hand, Zohair Husaain, counsel for ED, which has sought impleadment in the case, said what the office of chief justice does on the administrative side 'never comes in the way of the judicial side.' However, in view of the submissions, the chief justice ordered the listing of the case before some other bench. ED's interest in the case comes from the fact that Parmar was presiding over ED court and ED is investigating Bansal. The case stems from an April 2023 FIR, registered against Sudhir Parmar, Roop Bansal, and others under sections 7, 8, 11 and 13 of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Section 120-B of IPC for offences relating to a public servant being bribed, a public servant taking undue advantage without consideration from person concerned in proceedings or business transacted by such public servant, criminal misconduct by a public servant and criminal conspiracy. Sudhir Parmar, who was then special CBI judge, Panchkula, was accused of alleged favouritism towards Bansal and others who were accused in some FIRs being investigated by CBI and ED, pending before his court.
