Delhi Announces 'Freedom From Garbage' Campaign For Cleanest Constituency
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday announced cash rewards ranging from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 1 crore for the cleanest RWA, ward, and assembly constituency, based on their performance in the 'Delhi Freedom from Garbage' cleanliness drive.
During a preparatory meeting for the 'Delhi Freedom from Garbage' cleanliness drive aimed at transforming the capital into one of the cleanest and greenest cities in the country, Ms Gupta said the best-performing Resident Welfare Association (RWA) will be awarded Rs 25 lakh, while the second and third positions will receive Rs 15 lakh and Rs 10 lakh, respectively.
The cleanest ward will get Rs 50 lakh, and the cleanest assembly constituency will receive Rs 1 crore in funding, she added.
RWAs and organisations participating in the campaign are required to upload before-and-after photos on a dedicated portal, which will be used to evaluate performance and disburse the prize money, she added.
Ms Gupta said Rs five crore has been allocated to the MCD for the campaign, assuring full government support to all those contributing to a cleaner Delhi.
"We are writing a golden chapter in Delhi's history. For the first time, agencies like the MCD, Delhi government, PWD, Delhi Police, and others are working together in full coordination," Ms Gupta said, urging every citizen to take ownership under the campaign's motto "Meri Delhi, Meri Zimmedari" (My Delhi, My Responsibility).
The drive will run from August 1 to 31, with the first two days focused on clearing backlogs in schools, hospitals, and offices. Every Saturday and Sunday, efforts will be concentrated on unauthorised colonies and JJ clusters.
Special clean-up drives are also planned at Yamuna ghats on August 14, 21, and 28, while Ring Road will be cleaned on August 29 and 31.
Meanwhile, taking a dig at the previous AAP government, CM Gupta said it had created a negative image of Delhi but under the leadership of the prime minister, a "positive and united front" is now working to address the city's long-standing issues starting with the problem of garbage.

Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Friday dismissed the plea of actress-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut for quashing the summoning order against her by a local court in Bathinda in a defamation case over her farm protest remark against an elderly woman farmer. "There are specific allegations against the petitioner who is a celebrity, that false and defamatory imputations by her in the retweet have dented the respondent's reputation and lowered her in her own estimation, as also in the eyes of others. Therefore, filing of the complaint to vindicate her rights cannot be termed mala fide," Justice Tribhuvan Singh Dahiya observed. The defamation complaint against the BJP's Member of Parliament was filed by Mahinder Kaur (73) of Bahadurgarh Jandian village in Bathinda district, alleging that Kangana had defamed her in a post on the social media platform X by identifying her wrongly as Bilkis Bano of Shaheen Bagh fame and implying that such women could be hired to protest for Rs 100. In her retweet, Kangana had commented: "Ha ha ha, she is the same dadi who featured in Time magazine for being the most powerful Indian... And she is available for 100 rupees. Pakistani jurno's have hijacked international PR for India in an embarrassing way. We need our own people to speak for us internationally." This was in reference to a tweet by Gautam Yadav, which carried the photograph of the complainant, Kaur, who contended that the defamatory content not only hurt her pride and honour, but also lowered her reputation among fellow protestors. Kaur asserted she had no connection with the Shaheen Bagh protests or the woman featured in Time magazine, and that the imputations were wholly false. Kaur said she belonged to a farming family, actively participated in the farmers' agitation, and that the remarks made by Kangna Ranaut had subjected her to public ridicule and caused mental distress. After hearing the matter at length, the High Court found no merit in the petition and dismissed it. The post, which was later deleted, targeted Mahinder Kaur during her participation in the farmers' agitation at Delhi's borders. On February 22, 2022, the judicial magistrate in Bathinda issued a summons asking Kangana to appear before the court. Aggrieved by the lower court order, she had approached the High Court, contending that the trial court had misapplied Section 202 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

Ashwini Vaishnaw responds to questions over reinstating concessions for senior citizens in railways
Train concession for senior citizens: It has been over five years since Indian Railways withdrew the concession for senior citizens travelling by train. In a statement on March 19, 2020, the national transporter announced the decision citing travel-related risks during the COVID-19 pandemic. 'In order to contain the spread of COVID-19 virus and to minimise the travel-related risks to elderly citizens, Indian Railways has taken steps to discourage senior citizens from undertaking non-essential journeys by removing special incentives which presently exist for their travel. 'Indian Railways has done this by withdrawing concessional booking of tickets to senior citizens for Unreserved & Reserved segment form 00:00 hrs of 20th March till further advisory. This step has been taken to discourage them from making non-essential journeys,' the railways had said. However, despite other pandemic curbs being lifted, the Ministry of Railways has not yet reinstated the concession for senior citizens. The issue has been raised multiple times by Members of Parliament, urging the government to bring back the benefit. In the ongoing Monsoon session of Parliament, Rajya Sabha MPs Dr John Brittas, Sandosh Kumar P, and Milind Murli Deora once again raised the matter with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The MPs questioned the government and sought reasons for not reinstating the concessions extended to senior citizens. They also inquired whether the government plans to reintroduce the concession for senior citizens this year. Responding to this, Vaishnaw on Friday (July 31, 2025) in a written statement said that Parliament Standing Committee on Railways has advised to review and consider concession to senior citizens at least in sleeper and 3 AC. He added that the government provide affordable services to all strata of the society and gave subsidy of Rs. 60,466 crore on passenger tickets in 2023-24. This amounts to concession of 45% on an average, to every person, travelling on Railways,' the Railway Minister replies. On subsidy, he stated that it is continuing for all passengers. 'Further, concessions beyond this subsidy amount are continuing for many categories like 4 categories of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjans), 11 categories of patients and 8 categories of students,' the minister added.

Nara Lokesh Accuses Jagan Reddy Party Of Cancelling Agreements With Singapore
Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh launched a scathing attack on the previous YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government, accusing it of systematically destroying the state's brand and obstructing development. He said the state suffered significant losses due to the cancellation of key agreements and the hostile environment created by the previous administration. Lokesh specifically cited the cancellation of agreements with the Singapore government for the joint development of Amaravati, as well as the exit of companies like Amara Raja and Lulu, as examples of the previous government's detrimental policies. He asserted that while other states have prominent economic hubs like Bengaluru and Chennai, Andhra Pradesh's brand is synonymous with the leadership of Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu. The IT Minister further alleged that the YSRCP is actively working to sabotage investments in the state. He claimed that a person named Muralikrishna, with links to YSRCP leaders, sent an email to Singapore officials to block investments by falsely stating that the AP government would change soon. Lokesh also pointed out that YSRCP leaders had gone to court to challenge the TCS land allocation. He criticized this behaviour, stating that while parties in Tamil Nadu and other states work together for investments, the opposition in Andhra Pradesh is actively working to deter them. Lokesh appealed to the YSRCP to stop its "destructive politics" for the sake of the state's youth and development. He warned that if such actions continue, it would be the people of Andhra Pradesh who would suffer. He reiterated the government's commitment to job creation and development, citing that the government brought in more investments in its first 14 months than the YSRCP did in its entire term.
