CM Devendra Fadnavis sets Sept 30 deadline for Navi Mumbai airport inauguration

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday said the state government has set a September 30 deadline to inaugurate the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA).
'Today we have set the target as we have to seek an appointment of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. We have set a target of September 30. This is an ambitious one but we have told officials of Adani, Navi Mumbai airport authority and CIDCO that you double or triple the 13,000 workers currently working here,' Fadnavis said. He was speaking to reporters after inspecting the ongoing construction work of NMIA along with Deputy CM Eknath Shinde.
The CM said all the licenses for the airport are in place. 'Because for commercial operations, you need certain licenses after completion of work. We have told them to initiate that simultaneously. So that we can inaugurate this around September 30, as per the convenience of the PM,' he said.
Fadnavis said the PM laid the foundation stone of the airport and he will inaugurate it. 'In two and a half years (of MVA rule) all infrastructure projects were delayed. But we returned to power and put them on fast track. However, the cascading effect of that (MVA rule) is on all infrastructure projects. We wanted to complete the work by April and initiate flight operations by August. Which is not possible now. However, the ongoing progress is satisfactory. We are hopeful that the September 30 deadline will be met,' Fadnavis said.
Earlier, Fadnavis said the physical work of the airport is 94 per cent complete, with runaway and terminal building work over. Work on the interiors is underway while an efficient system for baggage counters has been set up. 'This will be bigger than the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International airport with two runways,' he said, adding that it will be a green airport. All airport vehicles will be EV or alternate fuel driven.
Fadnavis said the airport will have good connectivity. 'A coastal road from Atal Setu is under progress which will be completed by March 2026. Shinde has suggested an elevated road from Thane. In addition all modes of transport such as suburban rail, metro and water transport will be developed for the ease of passengers,' he said. 'In the second phase, an underground metro will connect all the terminals,' he added.

Maharashtra Special Public Security Bill has safeguards to prevent misuse, critics haven't read it: CM Fadnavis

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis asserted on Sunday that critics of the Maharashtra Special Public Security Bill, which according to him would curb 'urban Naxalism', had not read it thoroughly. 'Those opposing the legislation have not studied it. And Those who have read are supporting it,' Fadnavis told reporters in Nagpur. Reiterating that the stated objective of the legislation was to prevent unlawful activities of left-wing extremist organisations with a focus on 'urban Naxalism', Fadnavis said, 'The safeguards in the legislation are so strong leaving no scope for its misuse.' Passed in the Legislative Assembly and Council, the Bill will now be referred to Governor C P Radhakrishnan for his consent, paving the way for its enforcement. 'I have repeatedly stated that the objective of the Bill is to combat Naxalism and banned Maoist extremist outfits. And take action against those organisations that are systematically operating to create anarchy. They are challenging the Indian Constitution, Parliament and institutions…' Fadnavis said. More than 12,000 suggestions received from various organisations and the public were taken into consideration while making the final draft of the Bill, the chief minister said. Fadnavis did not mention any individual leader or organisation. 'This legislation is not directed at any political parties or agitation or critics. All those working within the framework of the Indian Constitution and democracy have no reason to fear. Their rights and freedom remain intact,' he added. On Friday, Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray voiced strong opposition to the legislation. 'If the legislation is to combat Naxalism and terror, why are these terms not mentioned? Simply say the Bill is to fight Naxals and terrorism, ' he said while speaking to reporters on Vidhan Bhawan premises. Fadnavis further said that under the Bill, action cannot be taken against an individual but an organisation first. 'It would require consent from an advisory board headed by the chief justice of the high court or a retired judge,' he added. The advisory board will include district magistrates or government pleaders in the high court, and investigating officers will be of the rank of superintendent of police.

Sanjay Raut claims unity between Raj and Uddhav Thackeray needed to keep Mumbai a part of Maharashtra

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut on Sunday said it is necessary that his party chief Uddhav Thackeray and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena head Raj Thackeray form an alliance, claiming it will give a "new direction to the state". Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray (R) and his cousin and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) president Raj Thackeray gesture as they greet the crowd upon their arrival on stage to address a joint rally against the imposition of the Hindi language in primary schools, in Mumbai on July 5, 2025.(AFP) In his weekly column Rok Thok in the Sena (UBT) mouthpiece Saamana, Raut also claimed the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has nothing to do with the fight for Maharashtra's unity and Marathi "asmita" (pride). "The BJP's policy is to first loot Mumbai, then make Mumbai a union territory and play game for a separate Vidarbha and finish the existence of Maharashtra," he alleged. Raut said people have not forgotten Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in the past carrying placards with the message: 'Vidarbha is my only state', during agitations in Nagpur. If the unity of Thackeray cousins and their leadership does not remain intact, then Mumbai will be swallowed by "Adani-Lodha" and one day it will not be part of Maharashtra, the Rajya Sabha member alleged. In April, MNS leader Raj Thackeray sparked speculation about a potential political rapprochement with his cousin Uddhav Thackeray, noting their past differences were "trivial" and uniting for the greater good of "Marathi manoos" (Marathi people) is not a difficult task. The buzz strengthened when Uddhav Thackeray said he was ready to put aside trivial fights provided that those working against Maharashtra's interests will not be entertained, a veiled reference to Raj hosting Shiv Sena head and Deputy CM Eknath Shinde at his residence. On July 5, Uddhav Thackeray said he and his cousin Raj Thackeray have "come together to stay together", while sharing the political stage with the MNS chief for the first time in almost 20 years, after the BJP-led state government withdrew two GRs on the introduction of Hindi language for students from Class 1. Raut claimed the coming together of cousins Raj and Uddhav on July 5 gave confidence to 'Marathi manoos'. "This does not mean all issues of Marathi manoos have been resolved. The issues troubling the Marathi manoos remain as it is. Thackeray brothers came together against the imposition of Hindi but the political alliance (between the two parties) is yet to be announced. It is necessary that there is an alliance. Only then Maharashtra will get a new direction," he said. If anyone has an illusion that Thackerays will succumb to any kind of pressure, then they are fools, he asserted. Raut claimed the unity of Thackeray brothers has rattled the rulers in Delhi and in Maharashtra, a reference to the BJP. CM Fadnavis heats up the political atmosphere by meeting Raj, the Sena (UBT) leader said, adding the MNS president will speak on this and clear the confusion. Fadnavis and Raj Thackeray had met at a hotel in Mumbai last month. Raut said 'Marathi manoos' must first fight a battle for Mumbai and Thane, an oblique reference to retaining power in the civic bodies of the two neighbouring cities the polls for which are likely to be held later this year.
