ReNew Power to set up renewable energy complex in Andhra Pradesh's Anantapur district

The Hindu14-05-2025
ReNew Power, a Renewable Energy (RE) company, is investing about ₹22,000 crore in what it claims to be the country's largest single-site RE complex coming up at Bethapalle village in Anantapur district in Andhra Pradesh.
The ground-breaking ceremony for the project is scheduled on May 16. IT & HRD Minister Nara Lokesh will be participating in it, thereby giving a big boost to the State's RE landscape.
ReNew was the largest RE investor in Andhra Pradesh six years ago, that is, in 2019 with an installed capacity of 777 MW but it had suspended its expansion plans owing to the cancellation of Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) by the YSR Congress Party government.
The company's re-entry into Andhra Pradesh now reflects the investor confidence in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government, and the above project is the first major one being grounded after the State's Integrated Clean Energy Policy (ICEP) came into force in October 2024.
The breakthrough came after Mr. Lokesh's meeting with ReNew chairman Sumant Sinha on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum held at Davos (Switzerland). The project at Bethapalle, which is situated in Guntakal Assembly constituency, would have 587 MW solar and 250 MW wind capacities in addition to a 415 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Phase-I, whose total cost is pegged at ₹7,000 crore.
The cumulative capacity in all phases would be 1,800 MW peak of solar, 1 GW wind and 2,000 MWh BESS with an aggregate investment of ₹22,000 crore. The project aligns with Andhra Pradesh's ambitious target of 72 GW renewable energy capacity by 2029 as announced at RE Invest 2024.
It was stated that in the last eight months, there were major clean energy investments by Tata Power — ₹49,000 crore (7,000 MW), NTPC — ₹1.86 lakh crore (green hydrogen project), Vedanta's Serentica — ₹50,000 crore (10,000 MW), Brookfield — ₹50,000 crore (8,000 MW), and SAEL — ₹6,000 crore (1,200 MW).

Lokesh appeals to Telugu diaspora to invest in Andhra Pradesh and contribute to its growth

Minister of IT and HRD Nara Lokesh said Andhra Pradesh (A.P.) would undergo a dramatic transformation if a sizable chunk of the investments flowing into India from Singapore come to the State, and that the A.P. Government would extend all possible support to the Telugu diaspora living in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Hong Kong and Indonesia, who were keen on investing in the State, and contributing to preservation of Telugu language, culture, and traditions. Participating in a meeting of the Telugu Diaspora from South-East Asia organised by the A.P. Non-Resident Telugu Society (APNRTS) and the A.P. Economic Development Board (APEDB) in Singapore on Sunday, Mr. Lokesh said A.P. was destroyed during the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) rule, and the present NDA Government was rebuilding the State amidst heavy odds under the leadership of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, whose reputation was a big advantage. He highlighted the investment opportunities in A.P., and asserted that the APEDB would extend the necessary hand-holding to Telugu entrepreneurs coming forward to partner with the government of their home State. He said A.P. was following Singapore as a role model in implementing new policies, with focus on 'speed-of-doing business' and it needed the cooperation of the Telugu people in realising Mr. Naidu's vision. 'A.P. has over 1,000 km of coastline, a string of seaports and airports, highways, waterways, land, and connectivity, which make it an ideal place to invest. Also, the State has a rich talent pool,' he said. 'One capital — decentralised development' was the coalition government's slogan, in tune with which industries were being promoted in all the regions of the State, and due priority was given to the Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSME), Mr. Lokesh added.

NTPC Green Energy Ltd inks pact for setting up battery storage projects in Bihar

Government-owned NTPC Green Energy Ltd has inked an MoU with Bihar State Power Generation Company Limited (BSPGCL) to set up renewable energy and battery energy storage projects (BESS) in the state as part of the Centre's policy to reduce the carbon footprint in the country. The agreement was signed between Sarit Maheswari, CEO (NGEL), and Abdesh Kumar Singh, Director Technical (BSPGCL), in the presence of Minister of Energy, Planning and Development, Bihar, Bijendra Prasad Yadav and other senior officials from the state government. The MoU comes close on the heels of NTPC Green Energy Ltd winning a 1,000 MW capacity solar PV power project auction of Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited last month. The company signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) at a discovered tariff of Rs 2.56 per kWh. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, earlier this month, enhanced the financial powers of NTPC Limited from Rs 7,500 crore to Rs 20,000 crore for Renewable Energy capacity addition. As India's leading power utility, NTPC aims to add 60 GW of Renewable Energy Capacity by 2032, which will help the country move towards its larger aim of having 'Net Zero' emissions by 2070. The enhanced financial powers given to NTPC and NGEL will facilitate the accelerated development of renewable projects in the country. This move will also play a vital role in strengthening power infrastructure and ensuring investment in providing reliable, round-the-clock electricity access across the nation, according to an official statement. Renewable Energy projects will also generate direct and indirect employment opportunities for the local people at the construction stage, as well as during the Operations and Maintenance Stage. This shall provide a boost to local suppliers, local enterprises/ MSMEs and shall encourage the entrepreneurship opportunities within the country, besides promoting employment and socio-economic development of the country, the statement said. India has achieved a landmark in its energy transition journey by reaching 50 per cent of its installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources - five years ahead of the target set under its Nationally Determined Contributions to the Paris Agreement. The country is aiming to reach 500 GW of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030.
