Phillies Predicted To Land Two Stars In Huge MLB Trade Deadline Deal

The Philadelphia Phillies desperately need to add to their outfield and bullpen ahead of the trade deadline. While the team is very talented, they fell flat in the postseason last year. Upgrading the outfield and bullpen this week would help prevent that from happening again.
Could they kill two birds with one stone?
ESPN's Paul Hembekides recently predicted the Phillies would acquire both Minnesota Twins reliever Griffin Jax and utilityman Willi Castro in a massive deadline deal.

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - JULY 22: Relief pitcher Griffin Jax #22 of the Minnesota Twins celebrates after striking out Will Smith #16 of the Los Angeles Dodgers for the last out of the seventh inning at Dodger Stadium on July 22, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. More"The Phillies' need for a reliever is well-documented -- Jordan Romano has pitched to a 6.99 ERA, and Jose Alvarado is ineligible for the postseason because of his PED suspension," Hembekides wrote. "Jax's underlying metrics (40.7% chase rate, 39.7% whiff rate, 36.9% strikeout rate) are cartoonishly good and suggest his 3.91 ERA is artificially inflated.
"Philadelphia's need for another bat is likewise acute: Since May 1, second baseman Bryson Stott (60 wRC+) and left fielder Max Kepler (72 wRC+) have been among baseball's worst regulars at the plate. Not only has Castro posted an above-average batting line in each of the past three seasons (105 OPS+ over that span), but the utility player has also logged more than 300 innings this season in both the infield and the outfield."
Jax and Castro would be a pair of huge additions for the Phillies, but it would likely cost a solid prospect return. However, this would be much cheaper than chasing trades for Ryan Helsley, Jhoan Duran and Luis Robert Jr.
The Phillies would have to cut ties with a few prospects, but that's the cost of doing business. If the team wants to win in October, which they're very capable of doing, this is a move that needs to be made.

Phillies announcer thanks Twins for new closer Jhoan Duran after grand entrance: ‘This is unbelievable'
Ryan Hensley isn't the only new NL East reliever with an electric entrance. New Phillies closer Jhoan Duran kept his entrance from the Twins, with the stadium lights going out and 'El Incomprendido' by Victor Cardenas, Farruko and DJ Adoni blaring inside Citizens Bank Park. For Duran's first appearance with the Phillies, the NBC Sports Philadelphia broadcast didn't go to break in between innings so it could show the entire entrance. 4 Jhoan Duran during his entrance. AP It ended up being the right call. The duo of Tom McCarthy and John Kruk didn't say a word as Duran jogged out to the mound and was introduced, letting the pictures do all the talking. 'This is unbelievable,' McCarthy said. 'It's been a long time since something like this has happened at Citizens Bank Park. I don't think it's ever happened. I mean, seriously, John. Thank you to the Twins for passing this on to the Phillies.' 'Yeah, this is beautiful,' Kruk said. 4 Jhoan Duran recorded the save during his Phillies debut. Bill Streicher-Imagn Images 4 The graphics during Jhoan Duran's entrance. @AwfulAnnouncing/X Duran made good on the hype by setting the Tigers down 1-2-3 in the ninth to close out a 5-4 come-from-behind win as the Phillies jumped ahead of the Mets in the NL East. The star closer could change the equation for the Phillies, whose bullpen has been a longstanding issue. 4 John Kruk (l) and Tom McCarthy (r) during a 2024 game. @phillies/YouTube Duran has a 1.97 ERA this season and should shore up the ninth inning for Philadelphia. The Phillies, who entered Saturday leading the division by a half-game, traded a pair of top prospects, Eduardo Tait and Mick Abel, to Minnesota for Duran. Philadelphia is also preparing to welcome David Robertson to its bullpen after signing a pro-rated deal earlier this summer. Duran was part of a mass exodus from Minnesota, which also included Carlos Correa waiving his no-trade clause to return to the Astros due to the Twins trending downward.

Red Sox Open Intriguing New Path For Fan-Favorite Prospect To Reach MLB
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Boston Red Sox have so many good young position players that it's become difficult for the next wave of prospects to carve a path to the big leagues. This season, the "Big Three" of Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer, and Kristian Campbell all debuted, while rookie catcher Carlos Narváez has won the starting job behind the plate. Last year, it was Ceddanne Rafaela and Wilyer Abreu getting their first extended looks, and both have become instrumental pieces of the outfield. That leaves the outfield picture overcrowded, as many Red Sox fans are keenly aware. And it leaves little room for top prospect Jhostynxon Garcia, a fan-favorite minor league outfielder nicknamed "The Password," to make his big-league impact. FORT MYERS, FLORIDA - MARCH 14: Jhostynxon Garcia #91 of the Boston Red Sox walks into the dugout before an exhibition game against the Minnesota Twins at JetBlue Park at Fenway South on March 14,... FORT MYERS, FLORIDA - MARCH 14: Jhostynxon Garcia #91 of the Boston Red Sox walks into the dugout before an exhibition game against the Minnesota Twins at JetBlue Park at Fenway South on March 14, 2025 in Fort Myers, Florida. More Maddie Malhotra/BostonGarcia, the No. 88 prospect in baseball according to MLB Pipeline, has raked in Double-A and Triple-A this season, but he's primarily played center field. It was somewhat surprising he wasn't traded at Thursday's deadline, but perhaps the Red Sox see a new path forward for him to arrive in Boston. According to Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic, the Red Sox intend to get Garcia some reps at first base at some point this season. McCaffrey initially reported that tidbit on Tuesday, but it picked up traction when she wrote a separate post about it on Friday. "Red Sox farm director Brian Abraham ... said getting Garcia reps at first is something they've discussed. Still, since Kristian Campbell was optioned to Worcester and has seen increased time at first, alongside Vaughn Grissom, there's been less playing time available to introduce Garcia to the spot," wrote McCaffrey. "He suggested they'd try to get Garcia reps at first base at some point later this season." First base has been the most unstable position for the Red Sox all season, with Triston Casas' injury, Rafael Devers' refusal to play the position, Campbell learning in the minors, and Abraham Toro and Romy Gonzalez continuing their platoon for the last three months. If Garcia, who has a .921 OPS in 52 games at Triple-A, can learn the position, perhaps he has a long-term future in Boston after all. And though he's played adequate defense in center this year, he does have more of a first baseman's build. By no means has Garcia yet secured his long-term spot in the Boston lineup, but this could be a key step in that direction.
