'Saath ghoomna theek hai, par match nahi?': Ex-Pakistan pacer after India vs Pakistan called off in WCL

NEW DELHI: "Public ke saamne yeh dikhate ho ki hum nahi khelenge, aur saath mein ghumoge and shopping karoge, yeh unfair hai [You show the public that you won't play each other, but behind the scenes you travel together and go shopping — that's unfair]," former Pakistan pacer Abdur Rauf Khan said scathingly after the
India Champions vs Pakistan Champions clash was cancelled
in the World Championship of Legends (WCL) in Birmingham on Sunday.
The match was scrapped after social media furore and eventually players pulling out for the contest. Those on social media questioned the hypocrisy of the players for changing tune less than two months after cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor.
Rauf didn't hold back in his criticism of Indian players like
Yuvraj Singh
,
Harbhajan Singh
,
Shikhar Dhawan
, questioning their public stance versus their off-field camaraderie.

'They hang around together, eat together, party together — then when it comes to playing a match, why do they portray a different picture in front of the public?' Rauf asked.
"It's not just Pakistani players — even Indian players feel it. We've played together, shared dressing rooms, eaten together, gone shopping on tours, stayed in each other's hotel rooms — we're friends off the field. To then portray such a hard divide to the public — like 'we won't play them' — that creates unnecessary hype," Rauf said.

"Behind the scenes, the reality is very different. The fans, who come with so much excitement and emotion, are left disappointed. It's not a good look for cricket. We owe better to the game and its fans," he added.
India-Pakistan sporting relations had hit a roadblock due to the fallout from the April attack in Pahalgam.
Shikhar Dhawan was the first to make his stance public. He posted a screenshot on X stating: "This is to formally reiterate that Mr Shikhar Dhawan will not be participating in any matches against the Pakistan team in the upcoming WCL League...
In view of our current geopolitical situation and prevailing tensions between India and Pakistan, Mr Dhawan and his team have taken this position after due consideration..."
Rauf, who represented Pakistan in 3 Tests, 4 ODIs and 1 T20I, appealed for politics to be kept out of cricket.
"My consistent view has been — keep politics and cricket separate. A year or two of tension may halt cricket, but once relations normalize, matches resume anyway.
So why stop in the first place?... So yes, both governments should sit down and sign an agreement that cricket and sports will continue regardless of external conditions. Political tensions may come and go, but sports should not suffer," he said.
"You can't permanently shut this down. Tensions might last for a year or two, but ultimately the countries reconnect. So why halt sports in the first place?... That's why I believe there should be a clear framework or agreement ensuring continuity.
Political issues will persist due to geographical realities — but let sports breathe. Let it flourish," he added.
"The issues between India and Pakistan have been long-standing. Sometimes they escalate, sometimes relations improve. When relations are good, cricket resumes. When tensions rise, everything is shut down. Unfortunately, the fans are the ones who suffer the most... I believe there should be a formal agreement that regardless of political tensions, ICC-sanctioned events or bilateral tournaments should continue uninterrupted," Rauf concluded.

All-India Affair: Koneru Humpy to meet Divya Deshmukh in FIDE Women''s World Cup final

Grandmaster Koneru Humpy held her nerves to score a come-from-behind victory over China'sTIngjie Lei in the tiebreaker to set up an all-Indian summit clash against Divya Deshmukh at the FIDE Women's World Cup here on Thursday (July 24, 2025). Humpy will clash with Divya Deshmukh in the final starting after a day's rest starting on Saturday. With Humpy winning, both she and Divya have now qualified for the Women's candidates' tournament next year. Having drawn the first two games in the normal time control Humpy had to settle up with another 1-1 draw in the tiebreaker that comprised two games with 15 minutes for both players with an increment. After two draws here, Humpy had to really work hard in the next set of tiebreak games that had 10 minutes for both players with another increment. Lei got in the lad early in the set of these two games and Humpy erred in the middle game to lose a pawn and get in to a difficult endgame. What followed was pretty logical as Lei got in command and even thought the position was closer to a draw Humpy did not find the best defensive resources to equalize. Humpy lost another pawn on the queen side and despite the presence of opposite coloured Bishops in the endgame, white's influence on both flanks tilted things decisively in her favour. It was a win on demand wherein Humpy dominated the next game. The Queen pawn opening was good enough wherein Humpy was in command right from the word go. Humpy won with her superior technique and also her absolute determination to turn the tide in her favour from any given position. In the third set of tie-break games Humpy drew white in the first game and crushed Lei in all departments of the game. Winning this game meant that just a draw was needed for her to get in to the final and in the return game Humpy was at her technical best as she won again out of an Italian opening. If there is one title that has eluded Humpy it's the World Cup and world championship. Apart that Humpy has won everything under the sun.

BFI announces Rs 17.5 Lakh prize money for Indian Medal Winners at Brazil and Astana Boxing World Cups

World Boxing Cup medalists with Boxing Interim Committee Chairman Ajay Singh, Olympic Medalist Vijender. (PIC - X) The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) has announced a prize purse of Rs 17.5 lakh to reward the 17 Indian boxers who brought home medals from the recent World Boxing Cup legs in Brazil and Kazakhstan. Each gold medallist will receive Rs 2 lakh, silver medallists Rs 1 lakh, and bronze winners Rs 50,000, as India builds momentum toward the World Boxing Cup Finals to be held in New Delhi later this year. The announcement comes at a time when India's national core group continues high-intensity training at the Patiala camp in preparation for two key international events: the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool in September and, later, the World Boxing Cup Finals on home soil. In a further boost to the development pipeline, the BFI has been approached by China to explore a strategic partnership spanning junior, sub-junior, and elite levels, including potential joint training camps and sparring exchanges. Commenting on the pugilists' success and the path forward, BFI President-Chairman, Interim Committee, Mr Ajay Singh, said: 'I want to congratulate our boxers for a fantastic showing on the world stage. Our efforts are beginning to bear fruit. India has made a huge mark in the first two cups and our fifth in the world. It's a matter of pride. When you go to these championships, people come up to congratulate the contingent, to tell us what a great job India is doing in boxing. We have also been approached by China for a strategic relationship for boxing development, reflecting how highly the world is looking at Indian boxing.' 'But this is just the beginning. There are many Mary Koms and Vijender Singhs out there; we must nurture them and ensure they're prepared to deliver at the biggest stages, including the Olympics,' he added. The dual World Boxing Cup performance brought India a total of 17 medals, including 4 gold, with standout showings from Sakshi (54kg), Jaismine Lamboria (57kg) and Nupur (80+kg) in Astana, and Hitesh Gulia (70kg) in Brazil. Notably, both Hitesh and Abhinash Jamwal (65kg) secured medals at both events—a gold and silver for Hitesh; two silvers for Abhinash—underlining consistency across weight categories. In addition to the gold medallists, India's medal tally included silvers for Pooja Rani (80kg), Minakshi (48kg), Jugnoo (85kg), and Hitesh and Abhinash in Astana, while Sanju (60kg), Nikhil Dubey (75kg), and Narender (90+kg) earned bronze. From the Brazil leg, bronze medals were also secured by Jadumani Singh (50kg), Manish Rathore (55kg), Sachin Siwach (60kg), and Vishal (90kg). Speaking at the ceremony, guest of honour Mr Vijender Singh, India's first Olympic boxing medallist, said: 'You all have done very well, all the boys and girls. We have to keep going. There are a lot of hurdles in life, and we have to move ahead without being satisfied, always hungry for more success.' The recognition reflects the Federation's continued push to reward performance and sharpen India's international boxing ecosystem with depth, structure, and continuity at its core. Earlier this year, India clinched a rich medal haul at the Asian Boxing U-15 and U-17 Championships, underscoring the strength of its talent pipeline. At the Thailand Open, India's second- and third-in-line boxers delivered silverware, showcasing bench strength across categories. Domestically, the recently concluded Elite Women's Boxing Tournament in Telangana offered high-quality exposure for top contenders and a platform to identify the next tier of national talent.
