Haleon captures over 20% market share in Egypt, locally manufactures 90% of product portfolio

Haleon, the global consumer health leader, has reinforced its footprint in Egypt following its demerger from GSK in July 2022. The company now holds over 20% of Egypt's consumer health market and manufactures approximately 90% of its flagship brands locally, according to Asif Alavi, General Manager for North Africa at Haleon.
Speaking to Daily News Egypt, Alavi said that local production covers trusted household names such as Sensodyne, Parodontax, Panadol, Otrivin, and Voltaren Emulgel, underscoring Haleon's commitment to supply chain resilience and economic contribution through technology transfer and export capabilities. Egypt serves as a key regional base for exports to the Maghreb, Gulf countries, and Saudi Arabia.
Alavi emphasized that local manufacturing has helped shield the company from global economic volatility, including inflation, currency fluctuations, and supply chain disruptions. 'Our strategy has significantly minimized exposure to global shocks, enabling us to maintain stability and accessibility in the Egyptian market,' he noted.
Globally, Haleon is advancing its innovation pipeline, including a £130m investment in a new Global Oral Health Innovation Centre in Weybridge, UK, slated to open in 2027. The facility will support Haleon's category leadership in oral health and accelerate R&D for key brands like Sensodyne, which Alavi described as resilient due to its therapeutic value and strong dentist recommendations—even during economic downturns.
Recognizing the price sensitivity in emerging markets, Haleon has adopted a multi-format, tiered pricing strategy to ensure broad accessibility.
The company also champions self-care as a cornerstone of sustainable healthcare. Alavi cited research by the Global Self-Care Federation, which estimates self-care interventions have already delivered $119bn in global healthcare cost savings and $1.9trn in welfare gains—figures projected to rise to $179bn and $2.8trn, respectively.
Looking ahead, Alavi reaffirmed Haleon's long-term vision in Egypt: 'We are committed to being a core contributor to the Egyptian healthcare ecosystem—by making everyday health more accessible, inclusive, and sustainable.'

Egypt, UK deepen economic, development ties ahead of Madbouly's visit to London

Egypt's Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation, Rania Al-Mashat, held talks with UK Minister of State for International Development, Baroness Jenny Chapman, on the sidelines of the G20 Development Ministers' Meeting in South Africa. The meeting focused on advancing bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, and global development reform ahead of the upcoming visit by Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly to the UK. Both officials underscored the strategic significance of the visit, describing it as a pivotal step toward transforming Egyptian-British relations into a deeper partnership. The visit also aligns with Egypt's broader push to strengthen ties with the European Union. Discussions centered on reforming global financial systems to make them more inclusive and accessible for developing countries. The ministers stressed the urgency of implementing international recommendations for greater transparency in financing and called for reforms to the UN's development frameworks to ensure stronger national ownership and coordination. Al-Mashat highlighted Egypt's expanding collaboration with the UK in key areas such as food security, entrepreneurship, and SME development. She noted that the UK remains one of Egypt's top foreign investors, with significant engagement in energy, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, and consumer goods. The meeting also reviewed the role of key British financial institutions—including the World Bank, UK Export Finance (UKEF), and British International Investment (BII)—in supporting Egypt's development priorities. BII, which considers Egypt a key market, is actively investing in areas like renewable energy and infrastructure. The ministers acknowledged the contribution of the British-Egyptian Business Association (BEBA) and the Egyptian-British Chamber of Commerce (EBCC) in fostering stronger commercial links. Al-Mashat outlined the forthcoming launch of Egypt's 'National Narrative for Economic Development,' a strategic initiative aimed at accelerating structural reforms, boosting industrial output, and attracting foreign direct investment. She emphasized that economic measures introduced since March 2024 have stabilized the macroeconomic environment and improved investor confidence. Climate cooperation was also a major theme, with discussions on Egypt's NWFE (Nexus of Water, Food, and Energy) platform and BII's role in financing green hydrogen and clean energy projects. The UK's support for global climate funds—including the Climate Investment Funds (CIF) and the Green Climate Fund (GCF)—was noted, along with the joint 'Green Growth: Egypt–UK' initiative, which continues through COP30. Baroness Chapman reaffirmed the UK's commitment to its partnership with Egypt, praising Cairo's historical and humanitarian leadership—particularly its role in supporting Gaza. She also reiterated the UK's call for a sustainable ceasefire to ensure unimpeded humanitarian aid. The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to deepening economic and development cooperation and advocating for global financial reforms that empower developing countries.

MSMEDA expands partnership with Japan's JICA to boost youth-led industrial projects

Bassel Rahmy, CEO of Egypt's Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Development Agency (MSMEDA), has met with Yu Ebisawa, the newly appointed Resident Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Egypt, to discuss expanding bilateral cooperation aimed at supporting youth-led industrial and productive enterprises. This marks Ebisawa's first official visit to MSMEDA since assuming his post in 2025. The meeting was attended by Raafat Abbas, Deputy CEO of MSMEDA, along with senior officials from both MSMEDA and JICA. Rahmy reaffirmed the agency's commitment to deepening its collaboration with JICA to transfer Japanese expertise to Egyptian industrial enterprises. He stressed the importance of helping small and medium-sized businesses improve production quality, meet international standards, and increase their ability to serve domestic demand and access global markets. This approach, he noted, aligns with Egypt's broader strategy to reduce imports and preserve foreign currency reserves. The discussions also reviewed the progress of an ongoing technical cooperation project between MSMEDA and JICA, which provides business development services to enhance enterprise competitiveness. Current efforts are concentrated in the food processing sector in Minya and the plastics manufacturing sector in Alexandria. Rahmy noted that future cooperation will focus particularly on expanding support for industrial and feeder industries—sectors that play a critical role in integrated value chains and have significant potential for job creation and economic impact. For his part, Yu Ebisawa expressed his appreciation for the strong and productive partnership with MSMEDA and affirmed JICA's readiness to continue and strengthen cooperation in support of small enterprise development and enhanced productivity across Egypt.

Al-Sisi reviews transport, industry projects, urges drive to make Egypt global logistics hub

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi held a meeting on Sunday with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Transport and Industry Kamel Al-Wazir, and Presidential Financial Advisor General Ahmed El-Shazly to review the progress of key transport and industrial development projects, according to a statement by the presidency. Presidential spokesperson Mohamed El-Shennawy said the meeting focused on advancing railway projects, particularly the Arish–Taba line and the Bir Al-Abd–Arish extension, which are designed to spur development in the Sinai Peninsula and create a logistics corridor linking the Red Sea to the Mediterranean. The discussions also included updates on the development and modernisation of major seaports, including Ras Sudr, Gargoub, Abu Qir, Greater Alexandria, New El-Mex, Ain Sokhna, Taba, and Damietta, recognising their central role in Egypt's national economic strategy. Progress on Cairo's fourth metro line and the high-speed electric rail network was also reviewed, as part of broader efforts to modernise Egypt's transport infrastructure and enhance connectivity across the country. The meeting further addressed plans to develop industrial zones in Upper Egypt, particularly in Wadi Al-Saririya and Al-Matahara in Minya, as well as northern Fayoum. These projects aim to stimulate industrial activity in underdeveloped regions and create employment opportunities, especially in labour-intensive sectors such as textiles and ready-made garments. President Al-Sisi stressed the importance of completing all projects according to schedule and directed continued work to establish integrated logistics corridors that seamlessly connect industrial zones to Egypt's upgraded ports. He underlined that these initiatives must be integrated with the country's modern network of roads, highways, and railways to strengthen Egypt's position as a global trade and logistics hub.
