Alphabet's Google Offers Buyouts to U.S. Staff Amid AI Push
Tech giant Alphabet (GOOGL) is offering buyouts to U.S. employees within some of its core teams. Google sent an internal memo yesterday informing staff about the buyouts, which apply to its Knowledge and Information (K&I), central engineering, marketing, research, and communications teams. Meanwhile, employees from DeepMind, Google Cloud, YouTube, and central ad sales are excluded from the buyout offer.
Confident Investing Starts Here:
Google is focused on ramping up its artificial intelligence (AI) ambitions and seeks to reduce costs and avoid ugly layoffs through these measures. Alphabet has set a massive $75 billion capex budget for AI infrastructure this year. The buyouts come as a prelude to potential layoffs, as earlier experiences have shown that employees prefer being offered buyouts rather than being laid off instantly.
Google Tightens Return-to-Office Policy with Buyouts
Along with the buyouts, Google has also mandated that employees who live near the office return to a hybrid work model. A buyout is a Voluntary Exit Program (VEP) offered to certain employees, allowing them to choose whether or not to accept the offer. In its memo, Google said that employees who are excited about their work and feel energized and motivated are encouraged to continue working at the company. In contrast, those 'having difficulty meeting the expectations of your role' could opt to take the package. Google is reportedly offering staff up to 14 weeks of severance, and the offer will be available through July 1.
Notably, Google's K&I team includes some of its most popular functions, including those of Search, Ads, and Commerce teams. The decision to cut staff within the K&I team could be related to Google's loss in a landmark antitrust case alleging dominance in Search and Ad Tech. Google awaits the remedial decision in both cases, with one possible outcome being the divestiture of both units.
Google resorted to mass layoffs in 2023, cutting roughly 6% of its workforce. The company faced severe criticism for this step and has since decided to rely on VEPs or buyouts for future workforce reductions. Until now, Google has downsized staff in its Pixel, Chrome, Android, Assistant, HR, Finance, and Legal teams. It remains to be seen whether Google undertakes another round of layoffs from these teams in the future.
Is GOOGL Stock a Buy or Sell?
On TipRanks, GOOGL stock has a Strong Buy consensus rating based on 27 Buys and nine Hold ratings. Also, the average Alphabet price target of $198.50 implies 11.1% upside potential from current levels. Year-to-date, GOOGL stock has lost 5.4%.

Asia shares track Wall St gains before payrolls test
By Wayne Cole SYDNEY (Reuters) -Asia shares firmed on Monday as seemingly unquenchable demand for technology companies lifted S&P 500 futures to another all-time peak, while the dollar dipped on concerns U.S. jobs data will show enough weakness to justify larger rate cuts. Investors were also keeping a wary eye on the progress of a huge U.S. tax-cutting and spending bill slowly making its way through the Senate, with signs it may not make it by President Donald Trump's preferred July 4 deadline. The Congressional Budget Office estimated the bill would add $3.3 trillion to the nation's debt, testing foreign appetite for U.S. Treasuries. There was no doubting the demand for the U.S. tech sector and megacap growth stocks including Nvidia, Alphabet and Amazon. Nasdaq futures rose another 0.3%, while S&P 500 e-minis added 0.2%. The bullish sentiment spilled over into Japan's Nikkei which rose 1.0%, while South Korean stocks gained 0.5%. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan firmed 0.1%. A holiday on Friday means U.S. payrolls are a day early, with analysts forecasting a rise of 110,000 in June with the jobless rate ticking up to 4.3%. The resilience of the labour market is a major reason the majority of Federal Reserve members say they can afford to wait on cutting rates until they can gauge the true impact of tariffs on inflation, so a weak report would stoke speculation of a rate cut in July rather than September. "While initial jobless claims retreated somewhat from their recent high, continuing claims jumped higher yet again," noted Michael Feroli, head of U.S. economics at JPMorgan. "Consumers' assessment of labor market conditions also deteriorated in the latest confidence report." "Both of these developments suggest that the unemployment rate in June should tick up to 4.3%, with a significant risk of reaching 4.4%." The latter outcome would likely see futures push up the chance of a July easing from the current 18% and price in more than the present 63 basis points of cuts for this year. DOLLAR DOLDRUMS Fed Chair Jerome Powell will have an opportunity to repeat his cautious outlook when he joins several other central bank chiefs at the European Central Bank forum in Sintra on Tuesday. The prospect of an eventual policy easing has helped Treasuries weather worries about the U.S. budget deficit and the huge amount of borrowing it entails. Yields on 10-year Treasuries were steady at 3.27%, having fallen 9 basis points last week. The dollar has not fared so well, in part due to concerns tariffs and chaotic policies from the White House will drag on economic growth and erode the country's claim to exceptionalism. The euro was near its highest since September 2021 at $1.1731, having climbed 1.7% last week, while sterling stood near a similar peak at $1.3719. The dollar was down a fraction at 144.48 yen, after losing 1% last week, while the dollar index dipped to 97.163. James Reilly, a senior markets economist at Capital Economics, noted the dollar had fallen by more at this stage in the year than in any previous year since the U.S. moved to a free-floating exchange rate in 1973. "At this point, further weakness could become self-reinforcing as underhedged European/Asian portfolios chase the move," he added. "So, we suspect that this could be a pivotal period for the greenback – either it turns around here or there is another 5% or so fall around the corner." In commodity markets, the general revival in risk sentiment has undermined gold, which slipped to $3,266 an ounce and further away from April's record top of $3,500. [GOL/] Oil prices continued to struggle on concerns about plans for increased output from OPEC+, which contributed to a 12% slide last week. [O/R] Brent dropped a further 55 cents to $67.22 a barrel, while U.S. crude eased 68 cents to $64.84 per barrel. 2 Top Stocks Down 40% to Buy With $1,000
Reddit's data could be a valuable asset that Wall Street is overlooking. Marvell is well-positioned to benefit from data centers for AI workloads. 10 stocks we like better than Reddit › Buying shares of competitively positioned companies that are experiencing robust growth for their products can put you on the road to financial freedom. Sometimes the market gives you the opportunity to buy quality stocks at big discounts that can set you up for outstanding results. If you have $1,000 you don't need for at least five years, there are a few growth stocks that Wall Street is currently sleeping on that could deliver great returns over the next few years. Reddit (NYSE: RDDT) is a popular online platform that is built around discussion threads on an endless number of topics. Over 400 million people visit Reddit on a weekly basis. This has driven strong growth in the company's advertising revenue, which is the primary means it monetizes its platform. The stock is down 39% from its recent highs. This can be attributed to two things. First, it was due for a correction after climbing to a high price-to-sales multiple of around 25. It now trades at a lower multiple of 19. Second, Wall Street has been concerned about Alphabet's Google's launch of new artificial intelligence (AI) features in Search. Google's AI Overviews, for example, is taking content from Reddit and summarizing it in Google Search results. This could lead to less traffic going directly to Reddit's platform and limit its revenue growth prospects. However, Reddit continued to report extremely strong growth in the first quarter. Revenue grew 61% year over year, with 108 million daily active users. Advertisers continue to invest in Reddit's platform, given the high engagement from these users, not to mention that many people visiting Reddit are researching a product to buy, making it more likely they will click on an ad. All the discussions and comments across Reddit's communities are not only leading to strong advertising growth, but also opening up new growth opportunities. In fact, Reddit is starting to make a significant amount of money licensing its data to companies building AI models. Its "other" revenue grew 66% year over year in Q1, representing about 9% of its quarterly revenue. This growth in data licensing signals a competitive advantage for Reddit not fully reflected in the stock price. This makes the stock a compelling buy after the recent dip. There is substantial investment pouring into data center infrastructure (e.g., advanced chips and networking systems) to lay the groundwork for an AI-driven economy. Marvell Technology (NASDAQ: MRVL) is riding this wave, yet the stock is down 41% from its recent high, setting up a buying opportunity ahead of a potential bull run. Marvell is a leader in supplying custom chip solutions and networking products for data centers. Its data center business totaled 76% of its revenue last quarter and also, coincidentally, grew 76% year over year. The chipmaker has benefited greatly from its partnership with Amazon Web Services, the leading cloud services provider for enterprises. In late 2024, it signed a new five-year deal to supply AWS with custom AI chips and networking products, which are needed for faster data transfer in AI workloads. Marvell also has a partnership with Nvidia to integrate its chips in Nvidia's NVLink Fusion. NVLink is a game-changing product that brings together custom chip solutions from multiple suppliers on a single platform. This could spell more demand for Marvell's accelerator processing units (XPUs). These agreements with AWS and Nvidia significantly bolster Marvell's long-term prospects. The stock looks expensive, trading at high multiples of sales and earnings. But keep in mind that it is seeing margins improve from growing demand. Adjusted earnings more than doubled year over year to $0.62 in the first quarter. Wall Street analysts expect 46% annualized earnings growth over the next few years, which could support significant upside in the stock. This Handy Device Can Clean Your Phone
Bad news: Your phone screen is pretty gross. According to previous HuffPost reporting, phones can carry thousands of germs, even more than most toilet seats, and if you're putting those germs next to your face all the time, experts say it can even exacerbate acne, rosacea or other pre-existing skin conditions. So how can you make sure you're getting rid of that bacteria? Enter: PhoneSoap, a nifty little device that uses UV-C light to sanitize your device and kill bacteria and viruses. Former HuffPost editor Danielle Gonzalez reviewed an older model of the PhoneSoap back in 2020, and confirmed with Dr. Charles Gerba, a microbiologist and professor at the University of Arizona, that UV light does work well to kill germs and sanitize your phone. This third-generation model of the PhoneSoap has garnered 4.5 stars across over 15,000 ratings on Amazon. Available in six colors, the device is like a case for your phone that provides 360-degree disinfection in 10 minutes. The light from the UV-C bulb bounces off the reflective interior to hit every spot on your phone. The PhoneSoap's interior dimensions are 6.8 by 3.74 by 0.78 inches, able to fit larger iPhone and Android models — just make sure to check the specs for your specific device. But that's not all; just because it's called PhoneSoap doesn't mean you can only use it for your phone. Germs collect on a bunch of high-contact surfaces like your headphones, jewelry, keys, credit cards and so much more. Depending on the size of your personal items, you can use the PhoneSoap to sanitize basically anything that fits. But the PhoneSoap is still useful, as one reviewer points out: 'The UV light does the trick and sanitizes my phone. Second, every time I stick in ― which I do every day or so, whenever my phone needs charging, as the device charges my phone as well as sanitizes ― It reminds me to wipe the face of my phone down and remove all the oil and bacteria that accumulates each day. It's like having a new phone every day.' Other reviewers also mention that using chemical cleaners on their phones adversely affected their skin, making the PhoneSoap a great alternative. Below, check out more promising reviews for the usefulness of the PhoneSoap and the peace of mind it can provide, or just go ahead and add it to your cart. Your skin will thank you. Get it from Amazon for $51.95+ (available in seven colors).
