Army veteran among blood donors honoured at MRC Kapit event
KAPIT (July 27): The Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) Kapit branch hosted a special dinner at the civic centre here on Saturday to convey appreciation to 231 local blood donors.
From the total, 25 were 'diamond' donors—those who contributed between 101 pints and 125 pints, 26 'gold' donors (71-100 pints), 73 'silver' donors (35-50 pints), and 107 'bronze' donors (at least 25 pints).
Among the 'Diamond Award' honourees was retired army sergeant Ari MS Maniam who recorded a total of 125 pints.
Apart from the certificate of recognition, the 65-year-old veteran also received a hamper from Deputy Minister in the Premier's Department Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyat, who was the event's guest of honour.
Hailing from Johor but currently settled in Song, Ari—nicknamed 'All Black' in his former Army Explosives Unit—said he began donating at age 20 back in 1979.
'Up to Dec 31, 2024, I have donated 125 pints. I feel this is the best way to help those in dire need.
'In the past, I would travel to Kapit Hospital to donate blood, once every four months. Now, I do it at Song Health Clinic because the facility is there.
'I still want to donate, although my children have been advising against it as I am getting old,' he told The Borneo Post.
Other Diamond honourees were Poh Ah Bee and Wong Ting Seng who donated 111 pints and 109 pints, respectively.

MRC Miri lauded for nurturing volunteerism, compassion among youths

Lee said MRC Miri currently operates several essential services including the Kidney Dialysis Centre, the Sunflower Centre for children with special needs, a 3R Recycling Centre, as well as first aid and ambulance support. 'MRC also runs training institutes for first aid, disaster relief response teams, and community outreach efforts for low-income groups (B40) under the care of Dr Devi Uma. The latest, a fundraising bakery, also contributed to sustaining operations,' he added. This year's parade, held at MCC Field, saw participation from 24 contingents representing primary and secondary schools as well as MRC Miri staff and Miri Sunflower Centre. 300 Tanah Merah Students To Benefit From MRC's 'Tuisyen Pintar Santuni MADANI' Programme
TANAH MERAH, May 30 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Rubber Council (MRC) has launched the 'Tuisyen Pintar Santuni MADANI' programme aimed at benefiting 300 students, particularly from Kampung Padang Siam and Kampung Sat here. MRC chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Suparadi Md Noor said the programme is implemented under the 'Satu Pemimpin Satu Kampung' initiative, also known as Santuni MADANI. Its goal is to enhance the potential of villages and the capabilities of communities through direct monitoring and engagement, aiming to identify socioeconomic issues and local needs. "This tuition programme is a community education initiative designed to enhance academic performance among students preparing for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination, particularly those in this district. "It will run from June to November this year concurrently at Masjid Mukim Padang Siam and Sekolah Menengah Ugama (Arab) Al-Fitrah, Kampung Sat, as an intensive preparation for SPM candidates," he told Bernama after launching the programme at Masjid Mukim Padang Siam here today. Mohamad Suparadi added that the programme is structured around four core objectives that complement each other in strengthening the community education ecosystem. "First, it aims to increase access to quality education for students in need, especially those from low-income families, through the provision of intensive and structured tuition classes. "Second, the programme focuses on improving academic performance in core subjects, namely Bahasa Melayu, English, History, Mathematics, and Science. This focus was chosen due to the importance of these subjects in public exams and their relevance to students' academic future and careers," he said. He added that the initiative also aims to create synergy among parents, teachers, and students by encouraging comprehensive and collaborative support for the learning process, thereby fostering a competitive educational environment.
