Previewing Oregon Ducks' July recruiting schedule with major commitments on tap

Yahoo04-07-2025
After a relatively slow start to the 2026 class for Dan Lanning and the Ducks, things turned around in the month of June as Oregon turned up the heat on the recruiting trail.
Over the last several weeks, we saw a long list of 5-star and 4-star players come to Eugene for official visits, and a handful of blue-chip players ultimately committed to the Ducks. Players like 5-star safety Jett Washington, 4-star WR Messiah Hampton, 4-star QB Bryson Beaver, and 3-star IOL Koloi Keli all verbally committed to the Ducks, boosting Oregon back inside the top 25 of the national recruiting rankings.

While those commitments and visits made for a fun June, the heat is about to get cranked up in July, and the Ducks could be in for a hot streak. Over the next several weeks, we expect to see a handful of commitments announced from top-ranked players, many of whom are heavily favored to choose the Ducks.
Ahead of those commitments, let's take a look at who is scheduled to announce soon and who could end up in Oregon's 2026 class by the time we reach August.
Commitment Date Set: 4-star S Devin Jackson
Commitment Date: July 3
National Ranking: No. 213
Position Ranking: No. 18
Commitment Buzz: Oregon Ducks Predicted

The former Florida Gators commit opened up his recruitment after nine months of being with his hometown Gators, and the Ducks are now the front-runner to land the 4-star safety when he announces his commitment on Thursday.
Commitment Date Set: 5-star OL Immanuel Iheanacho
Commitment Date: August 5 (But speculated July 4)
National Ranking: No. 8
Position Ranking: No. 1
Commitment Buzz: Heavy Oregon Ducks Lean
Oregon has long been favored to land this 5-star OT, and that only became more clear after his official visit to Eugene in June. Iheanacho has a commitment date set for August 5, but he said after his OV that he could potentially push it up to July 4. We will see this week if that happens or not, but either way, it feels as if the Ducks are the team here.

Commitment Date Set: 5-star WR Calvin Russell
Commitment Date: July 5
National Ranking: No. 21
Position Ranking: No. 3
Commitment Buzz: LSU Tigers Lean
Oregon made a run at Calvin Russell during his official visit to Eugene in June, but it appears that they aren't going to land him, with other schools like LSU, Miami, and Florida leading the way in his recruitment.
Commitment Date Set: 5-star S Jireh Edwards
Commitment Date: July 5
National Ranking: No. 23
Position Ranking: No. 2
Commitment Buzz: Heavy Alabama Crimson Tide Lean
There was a time when it looked as if Oregon was going to get Jireh Edwards out west with a massive commitment, but things have since swung back to the SEC's favor, with Kalen DeBoer and the Alabama Crimson Tide taking over as the heavy favorites to land the 5-star.

Commitment Date Set: 4-star WR Jalen Lott
Commitment Date: July 8
National Ranking: No. 49
Position Ranking: No. 5
Commitment Buzz: Oregon Ducks Trending
It's been an eventful recruitment for Lott, who is deciding among Oregon, USC, and Texas. While all three schools have felt good about where they stand over the last month, it appears that the Ducks are currently leading with a week to go until his commitment.
Commitment Date Set: 4-star LB Nick Abrams
Commitment Date: July 16
National Ranking: No. 229
Position Ranking: No. 14
Commitment Buzz: Anyone's Game
At this point, it's a bit too early to tell who is going to land Abrams, one of the most coveted uncommitted linebackers in the class. The likes of Oregon, Georgia, Alabama, and Michigan are all in it, and all have a realistic chance of landing the 4-star. This will be an eventful one to watch over the next two weeks.

Commitment Date Set: 4-star CB Davon Benjamin
Commitment Date: August 2
National Ranking: No. 35
Position Ranking: No. 5
Commitment Buzz: Oregon and Michigan Battling
While this commitment will take place after July turns to August, it is a big enough one to deserve mentioning. Oregon has long been considered the front-runner for Benjamin, one of the top cornerbacks in the nation, but they are going to have to fight to land him, with teams like Michigan, Washington, and USC all working hard as well.
Commitment Date Unknown: 4-star OL Tommy Tofi
National Ranking: No. 97
Position Ranking: No. 6
Commitment Buzz: Oregon the Heavy Favorite
Advertisement
Tommy Tofi was an Oregon lean, then he surprised everyone with a commitment to the California Golden Bears. However, he decommitted from Cal on Monday and was predicted to commit to Oregon. We will see when the final decision takes place, but it could happen any time now.
Commitment Date Unknown: 5-star EDGE Anthony 'Tank' Jones
National Ranking: No. 16
Position Ranking: No. 3
Commitment Buzz: Alabama the Team to Beat
Oregon is trying hard to land Tank Jones, and they're doing a good job of it, but it's going to be difficult to get him away from the Crimson Tide. Jones is an Alabama kid, growing up as a Crimson Tide fan, so luring him away from the SEC isn't going to be easy. The Ducks are going to have to play the NIL game if they want to land this 5-star EDGE.

Commitment Date Unknown: 5-star LB Tyler Atkinson
National Ranking: No. 9
Position Ranking: No. 1
Commitment Buzz: Georgia the Team to Beat
Much like Anthony Jones with Alabama, it's going to be hard to lure Tyler Atkinson, a Georgia kid, away from the Bulldogs. Atkinson has been to Eugene several times and appears to like the Ducks a lot, but getting him out of Kirby Smart's backyard is going to be no easy task. The Texas Longhorns are also deep in his recruitment as well.
Commitment Date Unknown: 4-star DL Deuce Geralds
National Ranking: No. 73
Position Ranking: No. 9
Commitment Buzz: Ohio State Trending
Advertisement
The Buckeyes are currently the team to beat for Deuce Geralds, but Oregon seems to be in a good spot here and trending in the right direction. Ole Miss is also in the picture for this high-end 4-star.
Commitment Date Unknown: 4-star OT Kelvin Obot
UPDATE: Kelvin Obot announced on Tuesday that he was committing to the Utah Utes.
National Ranking: No. 131
Position Ranking: No. 9
Commitment Buzz: Oregon Trending
This has been a battle between the Ducks, Utah Utes, and Michigan Wolverines, but it appears that Oregon is trending in the right direction and might be close to landing Obot in the near future. They're going to have to beat out Utah to land the Idaho prospect, but current buzz predicts that they will.

Brittney Griner leads way as Dream hand Lynx their first home loss of the season, spoil Napheesa Collier's 32-point night

The Minnesota Lynx are perfect at home no more. Brittney Griner led the Atlanta Dream to a 90-86 win over the Lynx on Sunday to hand Minnesota its first home loss of the season. The Lynx had previously won 14 straight at home to start the 2025 campaign. The Dream had to fend off a stat-stuffing 32-point effort from Napheesa Collier and a furious late comeback effort from the Lynx to secure the win. But they did both to improve to 15-10 and keep pressure in the East on the New York Liberty (17-7), whose first-place lead over the Dream now stands at 2.5 games. The Lynx still maintain the WNBA's best record with the loss that dropped them to 22-5 and 14-1 at home. Atlanta seized early control of the game and raced out to a 46-32 lead. Griner repeatedly outmatched her opponents in the paint as Atlanta built the lead en route to 22 points, four rebounds and three assists. She scored 17 of her 22 points before halftime and finished the night shooting 8 of 13 (61.5%) from the field. The second half was a different story. Collier, who scored 11 points in the first half, took the game over after the break. Minnesota cut its 14-point halftime deficit to 60-54 by the end of the third quarter, and Collier kept the pressure on en route to 32 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, four steals and two blocks. She one-upped Griner's offensive efficiency with a 14-of-18 (77.8%) effort from the floor, including a jumper that cut Atlanta's lead to 86-89 with 11.1 seconds remaining. But Jordin Canada hit a free throw that pushed Atlanta's lead back to two possessions at 90-86 with 7 seconds remaining, and the Dream ran out of time and chances to complete the comeback. With the win, the Dream cap a six-game road trip with a 3-3 record. They'll return to Atlanta to face the Golden State Valkyries on Wednesday in their first home game since July 7. They'll finish the season with a back-loaded slate of home games that features 11 of their last 19 games in Atlanta, including seven of their last nine. The Lynx will have a chance to start a new home-winning streak on Wednesday in a showdown with the Liberty featuring the two best teams in the league. The Liberty might play that game without All-Star Breanna Stewart, who's dealing with a leg injury but will reportedly travel with the team.

Royals and former All-Star pitcher Seth Lugo finalizing contract extension

One of Major League Baseball's top trade candidates is officially off the table. The Kansas City Royals are finalizing a multi-year contract extension with former All-Star right-hander Seth Lugo, per Jeff Passan. Lugo, 35, was set to hit the open market in the offseason and was heavily involved in trade rumors. The big veteran has put together another quality season for the Royals, posting a 7-5 record with a 2.95 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP in 19 starts. Teams that have had interest in Lugo, like the Toronto Blue Jays and Chicago Cubs, will have to shift their attention elsewhere. The 2024 All-Star was dominant last season, going 16-9 with a 3.00 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP in 206.2 innings. Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp Lugo led the Royals to the postseason for the first time since 2015, when the franchise won its second World Series championship. Kansas City is eight-and-a-half games behind the Detroit Tigers for first place in the American League Central and four games back from the third AL Wild Card spot. Even if the Royals miss the postseason, they've extended one of the most consistent starting pitchers over the past three seasons. Though on the outside looking in, this move may spark the Royals. Kansas City has had a disappointing season thus far, but there is plenty of baseball to be played. While this move indicates Lugo is safe from being traded, it remains to be seen if the Royals will be buyers or sellers at the trade deadline. More MLB:

Bolton football's Joshua Henderson, 16, dies after complications from heat stroke

Joshua Henderson, a Bolton High School football player who'd been hospitalized since collapsing during a July 7 practice, died on July 26, Memphis Shelby County Schools announced in a statement on July 27. "It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of a beloved Bolton High School (BHS) student, Joshua Henderson," said MSCS. "He was not only an exceptional athlete and dedicated scholar, but also a source of light and joy to all who knew him. His kindness, determination, and positive spirit left a lasting impression on classmates, teachers, and our entire BHS community." On a GoFundMe page being used to raise money for funeral expenses, Henderson's family wrote that he suffered a severe heat stroke and had been receiving treatment at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital. "After bravely fighting for his life in the hospital, Josh transitioned due to complications from organ failure caused by a severe heat stroke," the family wrote. "Josh was only 16 years old, full of life, laughter, and promise. He was deeply loved by his parents, siblings, extended family, and all who knew him. His sudden loss has left our hearts shattered and our world forever changed." MSCS said that grief counselors and support staff will be available at the school in the coming days for any students in need. Bolton finished 8-3 last season, and is slated to begin it's season vs. White Station on Aug. 22. Wendell Shepherd Jr. is The Commercial Appeal's high school sports beat writer.
