Cape Town City had been hoping for a last-minute lifeline that might see them reinstated in the Betway Premiership, but those hopes were crushed on Thursday night when the PSL Disciplinary Committee (DC) handed Gallants a R200,000 fine — half suspended — for violating registration rules. That means the MTN8 will go ahead without delay, and the top-flight calendar remains intact, even though the decision leaves many with more questions than answers. City had taken the matter to arbitration through the South African Football Association (SAFA), arguing that Gallants breached league regulations by fielding Mphambaniso in 26 of their 28 league matches last season despite not securing the correct clearance certificate. PSL prosecutor Zola Majavu confirmed on Thursday that Gallants had pleaded guilty to misconduct, acknowledging their failure to follow proper procedure in registering Mphambaniso. 'The PSL finalised a disciplinary matter, in which I had proferred charges of misconduct against Marumo Gallants FC and its player Monde Mphambaniso,' said Majavu. Shalulile currently has two years remaining on his contract with the Betway Premiership kings but has slipped down the pecking order at the club, with Luca Ribeiro and Iqraam Rayners preferred ahead of him. With Kaizer Chiefs in desperate need of a prolific frontman, many pundits have linked the 31-year-old with a move to Naturena. Chiefs have struggled for goals over the last two seasons, and a striker who has scored over 100 goals in the PSL could be a perfect option. However, it seems that Esperance, the former team of Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso, look set to steal a march in the race for his signature, according to an iDiski Times report. Should Shalulile move to Tunisia, this could be seen as a lost opportunity for Chiefs, who are still on the hunt for a new striker with a proven goalscoring record in the Betway Premiership. Meanwhile, Ribeiro's future also appears to be up in the air, with the Brazilian being scouted by clubs in Qatar as well as his home country. However, after winning the PSL's Player of the Season award, Ribeiro has insisted he is not going anywhere, and has put his head down in training as Sundowns prepare for the upcoming season, which kicks off this weekend with an MTN8 clash against Richards Bay on Sunday. Opinion: Why this is Nasreddine Nabi's last season at Kaizer Chiefs
Tunisian coach Nasreddine Nabi had high expectations during his 12 months at Kaizer Chiefs, but ultimately delivered disappointing results. The 59-year-old coach was initially sought after by Amakhosi while he was with Yanga. After parting ways with the Tanzanian club in 2023, he joined FAR Rabat in Morocco. At that time, reports indicated that Chiefs were reluctant to hire him along with his three assistants. Instead, the Glamour Boys appointed Molefi Ntseki, but his tenure lasted just four months before Cavin Johnson took over. Sadly, Johnson also struggled to move the team forward. Eventually, Kaizer Chiefs decided to approach Nabi once more, allowing him to bring his technical team this time. Nabi began the season positively, winning his first three matches across all competitions. However, despite a strong start to the 2024/25 campaign, Amakhosi were unable to maintain their momentum and finished ninth in the Betway Premiership. Their only saving grace was winning the Nedbank Cup, which marked the first trophy for the Khosination in a decade and helped secure the coach's position. With the new season starting this weekend, pressure is on the Tunisian coach. Chiefs will not participate in the MTN8 and will play their opening match next weekend against Stellenbosch. Given the team's recent performances in pre-season, it appears unlikely that they will contend for the league title. With the MTN8 out of consideration, Chiefs' realistic chances for silverware now lie in the Carling Knockout and Nedbank Cup. Since 2013, Nabi has never coached a team for more than two seasons. Despite his success with Yanga, he was only there for two years. After that, he joined AS FAR but lasted just a season before joining the Soweto giants. In May, there were rumours that Kaizer Chiefs might cut Nabi's stay short despite the Nedbank triumph. It appears the Tunisian was given another season to improve the team. With Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns looking sharp, it seems unlikely that Amakhosi will challenge for top honours. A bad start for Kaizer Chiefs will put pressure on the players, forcing Nabi to quit before his three-year contract expires.
