Most headlines will read that the Speedway Classic at the historic NASCAR track in Bristol, Tennessee experienced two rain delays, which forced Major League Baseball to postpone the game. It has been announced that the game will resume at 1 pm on Sunday. However, the meteorologist in me, and yes, I actually am one, knew that they would probably not get the game in Saturday night. Weather warning signs and forecasts were clear. Here's a breakdown of why any narrative saying it 'came without warning' or 'there was no time to prepare for rain' is false. NWS Warned Of Rainfall In The Days And Hours Leading Up To The Game The website stated, 'Following great pomp and pageantry to celebrate the first MLB Speedway Classic, the skies opened above the famous Bristol Motor Speedway and rain delayed the start of the historic contest between the Braves and Reds by two hours and 17 minutes. The game eventually got underway but was suspended with one out in the bottom of the first inning.' The National Weather Service warned of rainfall in the days and hours leading up to the game. In the NWS Morristown weather discussion on Friday morning, meteorologists wrote, 'On Saturday, an inverted surface trough will be across the TN Valley, which should help convection develop in the afternoon. The surface trough retreats west on Sunday as the ridge strengthens, but rain chances persist with the approach of a shortwave trough and jet streak.' There is a lot of meteorological jargon there, but I will translate it. The surface and upper atmospheric conditions were primed for rainfall Saturday and into Sunday. Persistent cloud cover was draped across much of the Southeast and southern Appalachia on Saturday as a frontal system stretched across the region. On Saturday morning at 7:55 am, NWS Morristown, the office responsible for the Bristol area, tweeted, 'Rain showers with a few thunderstorms are expected to develop over us today, bringing rainfall and a low risk of flooding. If looking to attend a certain⚾️ game this evening, light showers may be lingering.' In another Tweet Saturday afternoon, NWS also shared a short-range model showing expected rainfall that evening. It was clearly going to be raining in Bristol at 6 pm (map above) and in subsequent hours. From A Climate Perspective, It Was The Rainiest Time Of The Year In Bristol Certainly, the meteorological signals were there. From a climate perspective, the State Climate Office website at East Tennessee State University provides good context. While Tennessee receives the greatest amount of precipitation during winter and spring months, the site stated, 'A secondary maximum of precipitation occurs in summer in response to thunderstorm activity. This is especially pronounced in the mountains of the east where July rainfall exceeds the precipitation of any other month.' Early August conditions are likely similar. Bristol is in the Tri-Cities region so based on the data above, I would have advised MLB to schedule this game in April, May, or September. As a reminder to all organizations, there are weather and climate experts whom you can consult on these matters, but I digress. Motivated Reasoning As noted earlier, there was a lot of 'pomp and circumstance' surrounding this event. However, as I watched players, fans, and field crews struggle in the rain, my first statement at dinner is, 'This is an epic fail. Why are they trying to play this game?' My wife Ayana is the biggest Braves fan in our home. She added, 'They would never try to play in these conditions in their home stadiums. Someone is going to get hurt.' Throughout my meteorological career, I have lamented about something called motivated reasoning. It causes people to drive through flooded roadways, finish a round of golf while it is lightning, run a 5K in dangerous heat conditions, or stay put as a major hurricane approaches. What is motivated reasoning? It is process by which people or organizations consume information from a biased lens or ignore it altogether because there is a needed outcome. Given the primetime TV exposure, media presence, massive fan presence, and overall hype, I could certainly understand why there would be motivated reasoning to get this game in. MLB is going to try again today. Candidly, they are not quite out of the woods. The official forecast for Bristol, Tennessee calls for partly sunny skies with chance of showers or thunderstorms. The probability of precipitation is 30%. It is also important to remember that 30% is not 0%, so if it rains, that was in the forecast. Let me add one additional meteorological nugget. Complex, mountainous terrain can be a challenge for weather radar beams. Experienced meteorologists can often decipher what they see in these regions better than the average person looking at their favorite radar app.

Bay FC swing back into action on the fringe of NWSL playoff race
After a monthlong break for the NWSL schedule, Bay FC returns to action Saturday night at PayPal Park. As the second-year team seeks a second consecutive playoff berth, the home matchup against the Houston Dash could give them a much needed boost — Bay FC sits just three points behind Gotham for the league's final playoff spot. 'I believe that we've played some really good football in our possession and our shot creation — I mean, it's been so close. The only difference is now we've got to finish our chances,' said head coach Albertin Montoya. 'In this last month here, in our training sessions, our finishing has been better than it has been all season, and we'd love to carry that over.' Bay FC enters the second half still searching for consistency in the attack. Through 13 matches, Bay FC (4-6-3) has 15 points, putting them in a tie for 10th place with Angel City — four points ahead of the Dash. Bay FC's 14 goals rank them 11th in the 14-team league in scoring, despite boasting high-profile talents like Racheal Kundananji and promising rookie Karlie Lema. Kundananji (Zambia) returned to the Bay Area from the Women's Africa Cup of Nations this past week, where she scored three goals before the team fell in the quarterfinal stage in a 5-0 loss to Nigeria. Asisat Oshoala appeared in four matches for Nigeria, scoring one goal to help her team ultimately take home the title. 'We're super proud of both of them, what they do for our club, but also represent on the international stage,' said forward Penelope Hocking. 'They're two incredible players, two incredible teammates, and we're just really thankful to have them here. The games have been on in the hub so it's been really fun to get to watch them and celebrate them.' In the absence of Kundananji and Oshoala, a few players caught Montoya's eye during the two friendly matches Bay FC played during the summer break. Forward Catherine Paulson and defender Maddie Moreau got starts; Moreau's assist to Hocking led to the game-tying goal in Bay FC's 1-1 draw on July 19 against Angel City FC in the match's 57th minute. Kundananji and Oshoala are both expected back in the starting lineup, but Montoya didn't confirm whether that would immediately be the case at practice earlier this week. 'There are some players that haven't been with us, and obviously they want to be in that starting lineup this week,' Montoya said. 'Then there's players that have proved themselves and have done very well over this last month, and they also want to see themselves on that sheet when we announce the starting lineup, so I'm expecting these players to get after it from start to finish this week.' The club will look to see whether midseason additions and internal development can right the ship. Bay FC recently signed 19-year-old Onyeka Gamero from FC Barcelona, a high-upside winger currently recovering from an ACL injury. Gamero is expected to be a long-term offensive weapon — one that is particularly necessary given Bay FC's troubles putting the ball in the back of the net. But Gamero's recovery timetable has not been disclosed. The Dash (3-8-2) are in a transition phase themselves, led by first-year head coach Fabrice Gautrat and bolstered by the addition of veteran defender Christen Westphal in December 2024. Like Bay FC, Houston has struggled to find cohesion on both sides of the field. In their first matchup on May 24, the teams played to a 2-2 draw in Houston. Montoya observed, 'Playing Houston for the second time and learning from our last game, it was an exciting game with quite a few goals, and now playing in front of (our) fans, I think it will give us that little extra edge that has always helped us in getting the three points.'

MLB Speedway Classic Braves-Reds matchup suspended due to drenching rain
BRISTOL, Tenn. — It was a red flag for Major League Baseball at Bristol Motor Speedway on Saturday night. The Speedway Classic between the Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds was suspended in the first inning because of rain, soaking a record-breaking crowd for the first regular-season game in Tennessee. The plan is to resume the game on Sunday afternoon. The first delay at the historic bullring of a racetrack came after the ceremonial first pitch featuring a pair of Hall of Famers in Johnny Bench and Chipper Jones, joined by NASCAR drivers Kyle Busch and Chase Elliott. Reds pitcher Andrew Abbott showed up Saturday afternoon at Bristol wearing a cut-off version of a NASCAR race suit. 'Just went on eBay and found a couple options, and luckily that was the one that arrived in time. I had a couple of backups. Spencer Strider, who grew up in nearby Knoxville, got a bigger ovation than Reds starter Chase Burns, who is from Hendersonville and played at the University of Tennessee. The Reds stuck with Burns despite the delay. Strider warmed up. The Braves chose not to risk his third start in this situation coming off a second elbow surgery. The track with a racing capacity of 146,000 could host 90,000 or more even with sections blocked off.
