Bay FC swing back into action on the fringe of NWSL playoff race

After a monthlong break for the NWSL schedule, Bay FC returns to action Saturday night at PayPal Park.
As the second-year team seeks a second consecutive playoff berth, the home matchup against the Houston Dash could give them a much needed boost — Bay FC sits just three points behind Gotham for the league's final playoff spot.
'I believe that we've played some really good football in our possession and our shot creation — I mean, it's been so close. The only difference is now we've got to finish our chances,' said head coach Albertin Montoya. 'In this last month here, in our training sessions, our finishing has been better than it has been all season, and we'd love to carry that over.'
Bay FC enters the second half still searching for consistency in the attack. Through 13 matches, Bay FC (4-6-3) has 15 points, putting them in a tie for 10th place with Angel City — four points ahead of the Dash. Bay FC's 14 goals rank them 11th in the 14-team league in scoring, despite boasting high-profile talents like Racheal Kundananji and promising rookie Karlie Lema.
Kundananji (Zambia) returned to the Bay Area from the Women's Africa Cup of Nations this past week, where she scored three goals before the team fell in the quarterfinal stage in a 5-0 loss to Nigeria. Asisat Oshoala appeared in four matches for Nigeria, scoring one goal to help her team ultimately take home the title.
'We're super proud of both of them, what they do for our club, but also represent on the international stage,' said forward Penelope Hocking. 'They're two incredible players, two incredible teammates, and we're just really thankful to have them here. The games have been on in the hub so it's been really fun to get to watch them and celebrate them.'
In the absence of Kundananji and Oshoala, a few players caught Montoya's eye during the two friendly matches Bay FC played during the summer break. Forward Catherine Paulson and defender Maddie Moreau got starts; Moreau's assist to Hocking led to the game-tying goal in Bay FC's 1-1 draw on July 19 against Angel City FC in the match's 57th minute.
Kundananji and Oshoala are both expected back in the starting lineup, but Montoya didn't confirm whether that would immediately be the case at practice earlier this week.
'There are some players that haven't been with us, and obviously they want to be in that starting lineup this week,' Montoya said. 'Then there's players that have proved themselves and have done very well over this last month, and they also want to see themselves on that sheet when we announce the starting lineup, so I'm expecting these players to get after it from start to finish this week.'
The club will look to see whether midseason additions and internal development can right the ship. Bay FC recently signed 19-year-old Onyeka Gamero from FC Barcelona, a high-upside winger currently recovering from an ACL injury. Gamero is expected to be a long-term offensive weapon — one that is particularly necessary given Bay FC's troubles putting the ball in the back of the net. But Gamero's recovery timetable has not been disclosed.
The Dash (3-8-2) are in a transition phase themselves, led by first-year head coach Fabrice Gautrat and bolstered by the addition of veteran defender Christen Westphal in December 2024. Like Bay FC, Houston has struggled to find cohesion on both sides of the field. In their first matchup on May 24, the teams played to a 2-2 draw in Houston.
Montoya observed, 'Playing Houston for the second time and learning from our last game, it was an exciting game with quite a few goals, and now playing in front of (our) fans, I think it will give us that little extra edge that has always helped us in getting the three points.'

Cowboys may have stumbled into a superstar as a second-round pick angles toward starting

The Dallas Cowboys needed help at defensive end for the 2025 season. Facing the loss of long-time starter and multiple-time Pro Bowler DeMarcus Lawrence, the team needed reinforcements. The club had drafted the position, highly, but had yet to reap any dominating rewards. So when the opportunity presented itself to secure themselves the potential steal of the 2025 draft, they jumped on it Dallas secured the services of perhaps the best pass-rushing defensive end of the draft when they drafted Boston College's Donovan Ezeiruaku. But pre-draft accolades don't matter if it doesn't manifest itself on a pro field, and while training camp isn't the real thing, what Ezeiruaku has shown in Oxnard has a lot of people extremely excited. Rundown Position: Defensive End Age: 21 Height: 6-foot-2 Weight: 248 pounds Hometown: Williamstown, NJ High School: Williamstown College: Boston College (Highlights) Draft: 2025 Second Round (No. 44 overall) Acquired: 2025 draft Contract: Four-year contract (2025), $10.2 million 2025 Base Salary: $840,000, $1.85 million cap hit Profile With Micah Parsons not participating in practice due to his contract dispute, Ezeiruaku has been declaring himself as a true force to reckon with. Lining up primarily as a left defensive end, Ezeiruaku has shown a complex rush attack that is far beyond his years. He's also displayed the ability to set the edge, looking like he's ready to take on a starting role sooner rather than later. Dallas brought back Dante Fowler, who left for a season in Washington, and the expectation was that he'd be starting opposite Parsons, but that may not be the case and if it is may not be for long. The Cowboys also signed Payton Turner, a former first-round pick like Fowler, as veteran depth. They join last year's second rounder Marshawn Kneeland as Parsons' supporting cast. That's before mentioning 2022 second-round pick Sam Williams, who is looking to return from an ACL injury. Together, the Cowboys have assembled a tremendously pedigreed group at defensive end, but Ezeiruaku looks like a potential breakout star amongst the room. Tennessee Titans training camp: 5 takeaways from Day 9

The Tennessee Titans were back on the practice field Sunday and went through an emotional and intense practice. Like every practice in training camp, there were highs and lows, and the physicality got tempers flaring, setting off the first altercations of training camp. The defense bounced back and won the day, while the offense struggled after back-to-back solid outings. Here are five takeaways from the Titans' ninth practice of training camp. Tempers flare With the intensity of practice ramping up over the past few days, it was only a matter of time before players started to lose their cool, and it happened twice on Sunday. First, Mason Kinsey and Jarvis Brownlee got into a shoving match that teammates quickly broke up. This comes as no surprise, as Brownlee has been feisty and physical during camp, and caught the ire of Calvin Ridley on Saturday. The festivities didn't stop with Kinsey and Brownlee, as veterans Jeffery Simmons and JC Latham decided to take their physical battle up a notch before being separated by their teammates. Offensive struggles The offense started with a solid 7-on-7 period and went downhill from there. They weren't crisp; balls hit the ground, and the unit took a step in the wrong direction. Not only did the defense set the tone, but it also let the offense know about it, and eventually, head coach Brian Callahan joined in and made it clear that their performance on the field was lacking on Sunday. Tight ends are making plays The early 7-on-7 work in the red zone might have been the only real positive for the offense, and the tight end unit was the catalyst. Gunnar Helm, David Martin-Robinson, and Drake Dabney all pulled in touchdowns. There is a good battle taking place within that unit, and it appears to be one of the deepest positions on the roster. Starter Chig Okonkwo has been solid and flashing even more big-play potential, and Helm, Martin-Robinson, and Josh Whyle have flashed in recent days. Slye bounces back Kicker Joey Slye bounced back after a rough day and showed the accuracy that the Titans are counting on in 2025. He was a perfect 6-of-6 on Sunday with a long of 54 yards. Sley is now 31-of-36 in camp. Of course, these kicks lack game pressure, so monitoring how he does against the air will be important as the Titans progress through training camp. Injury front The Titans saw a couple of players leave the field on Sunday, including rookie safety Kevin Byard and defensive tackle Carlos Watkins. While Winston was planned, as the team is monitoring his knee after missing the offseason recovering from ACL surgery, Winston was not. The team once again held out T'Vondre Sweat, Blake Hance, and Chandler Brewer due to injury, but all three are considered day-to-day. After practice, offensive line coach Bill Callahan spoke about center Lloyd Cushenberry and was excited about his potential return, stating he is optimistic he will be returning sooner rather than later. Kevin Zeitler was given the day off.

Trinity Rodman strikes game-winning goal in first NWSL game in over 3 months

The NWSL saw the return of one of its stars in a big way on Sunday, Aug. 3, as the Washington Spirit's Trinity Rodman struck a game-winning goal against the Portland Thorns in her first match since April 12. Rodman, who battled back from a nagging back injury, entered the match in the 76th minute to a rousing ovation from the home crowd at Audi Field in Washington D.C. The cheers only got louder when Rodman scored in the second minute of second half stoppage time, catching a ball mid-bounce and firing it over keeper Mackenzie Arnold for the game-winner. "Holy cow, that was just the hardest thing I've had to go through with injury and everything," an emotional Rodman said after the game. "So, being back with the team, especially at home, with the stadium and the crowd behind me, scoring a goal like that – you saw I buried it. I was not going to miss it. I'm just really happy to be back. I missed the team. I missed doing what I love." WHAT TO KNOW AS NWSL SEASON RESUMES: How will Trinity Rodman fare? Who will win MVP? A 2024 Olympic gold medalist, Rodman has openly said her back is unlikely to ever get back to 100%. Rodman's only game for the U.S. women's national team since the Paris Olympics last summer came April 5. She scored just over five minutes into that 2-0 victory. Washington's next match will be Aug. 9 against Gotham FC, as the No. 2 team in the NWSL looks to make a push with Rodman at the helm. After the game-winner Sunday, it looks like things are off to a promising start. This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: Trinity Rodman strikes game-winning goal for Washington Spirit in NWSL
