DAP's stance on Sabah corruption claims ‘clear,' says Warisan aide

Borneo Post24-04-2025

KOTA KINABALU (Apr 24): DAP has made its stance on high-profile corruption allegations involving several state assemblymen, including the Speaker of the Sabah State Assembly.
Yong Tain Vui, Political Assistant to Warisan deputy president Darell Leiking, said the public is well aware of DAP Sabah's stance, as reflected in multiple statements issued by DAP leaders over the past months.
For instance, he said DAP Sabah chairman Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe, in a statement dated 20 January 2025, reaffirmed that DAP remains a part of the GRS-led state government. He also emphasized that while Sabah DAP operates autonomously without needing direct approval from DAP Secretary-General Anthony Loke, it must take into account the coalition's collective position — particularly PKR's firm commitment to support the Sabah Government until the end of its term and to continue working with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS).
Additionally, DAP Central Executive Committee member and MP for Sandakan, Vivian Wong, publicly thanked the Chief Minister for his commitment to safeguarding Sabah's natural resources despite the ongoing corruption allegations, Yong said in a statement on Thursday.
He was responding to the call of Kepayan Community Development Officer (PPM) Cyril Liew to DAP Sabah to clarify its stance on the high-profile corruption scandal ahead of the upcoming 17th State Election, warning that continued silence could erode trust and cost the party at the ballot box.
Yong added in response to growing political speculation, GRS chairman and Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor himself has also stated that GRS will explore the possibility of collaborating with Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the next state election.
'It is important to note that questions from grassroots supporters are no longer centered on DAP Sabah's stance — this has been made abundantly clear. Instead, the public is more concerned about whether the next state government will demonstrate genuine resolve in combating corruption to build a better Sabah.
'While DAP and PH leaders in Sabah continue to hold ministerial and key positions within the current administration, none of them resign from the current government – there is unnecessary to question their stances on corruption allegation, the answer is very clear,' said Yong.
He added it is also important to point out that DAP has not openly challenged or called for the resignation of any of the state assemblymen implicated in the corruption allegations — unlike the firm anti-corruption stance the party has championed in the past. This inaction further reinforces the perception that their position on this matter is, indeed, crystal clear.
Lastly, in an earlier interview with Cai Jin, veteran DAP leader Teresa Kok acknowledged the challenges of openly criticizing fellow coalition partners while serving in government. She noted that there are times when DAP must adopt a 'quiet party' approach in order to preserve coalition stability.

Dismissive attitude towards Borneo Bloc led to political shift: Hajiji

Published on: Monday, July 28, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 28, 2025 By: Jonathan Nicholas Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor ( pic ) said the lack of respect shown towards the Borneo Bloc by the previous federal leadership prompted him to reconsider his political alignment. He recalled a meeting in Kuala Lumpur with Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun and Datuk Seri Jeffrey Kitingan where a senior federal leader dismissed the idea of a united Sabah and Sarawak voice. According to Hajiji, the leader's comment, declaring himself as 'the Master,' signalled a clear disregard for the Borneo Bloc's aspirations and Sabah's role in shaping its future. Speaking during the Gagasan Rakyat AGM on Sunday, Hajiji, who is also Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) Chairman and Gagasan Rakyat President, said the incident led to deep reflection and eventually convinced him that change was needed for the sake of Sabah. He said the Unity Government under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had taken Sabah's longstanding concerns seriously, particularly those related to the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). Hajiji stressed that GRS backs the current government because it respects Sabah's dignity and has begun to deliver on long-overdue commitments such as the devolution of powers. He confirmed he would join Anwar during his visit to Sabah today, with cross-border cooperation and regional concerns in the Sulawesi Sea expected to be among the key matters discussed. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Federal leader's insult pushed GRS into unity govt, says Hajiji

GRS chairman Hajiji Noor said many of Sabah's demands were approved by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, whereas previous leaders found difficulty in devolving power to the state. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : A federal leader's disdain for the proposed 'Borneo Bloc' political cooperation led Gabungan Rakyat Sabah into supporting Anwar Ibrahim's formation of the unity government after the 2022 general election, GRS chairman Hajiji Noor said today. Speaking at the annual convention of Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah, he said a former federal leader, whom he did not name, had dismissed the idea of Bornean cooperation. 'I was with Masidi Manjun and Jeffrey Kitingan in a meeting with a big leader over there (in Peninsular Malaysia) at the time. The person said they were the masters. He did not like the Borneo Bloc. He did not want us to share our experiences and stories with our neighbouring state of Sarawak,' he said. 'I was shocked by his words. I thought about them for a long time. What did they mean? What was his intent? As I thought about it, I lost heart (tawar hati) in these people,' he said in a video of his speech published on Facebook by Sabah Media. Hajiji said it was after much thought that he finally decided that GRS would support the unity government being formed by Anwar. Since then, he said Anwar's government 'has listened to our voices, and we have been treated well', and reiterated that GRS remained in support of the prime minister. Hajiji said many of Sabah's demands under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 were approved by Anwar, as opposed to previous leaders who found difficulty in devolving power to the state. 'So what are we hoping for? If the unity government is good for our state, why shouldn't we support it?' he said. In March, deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof said the unity government had successfully resolved nine key claims related to MA63, including power to regulate gas supply in Sabah, the administration of the judiciary in Sabah and Sarawak, and guidelines on land reserved for federal purposes in the two states.

GRS Reaffirms Support For MADANI Government- Hajiji

KOTA KINABALU, July 27 (Bernama) -- Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) reaffirms its support for the MADANI Government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, says its chairman, Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. Hajiji, who is also the Chief Minister, said this was because many of Sabah's demands under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) had been approved and implemented for the benefit of the people, leaving no reason for GRS not to support the MADANI Government. 'I would like to reiterate that GRS remains supportive of the Prime Minister. Many of our initiatives and demands under MA63 have been approved by him. bootstrap slideshow 'Previously, it was very difficult to devolve powers or approve our requests... if the MADANI Government is good for our state, why wouldn't we support it?' he said here tonight. Hajiji, who is also president of Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat), said this in his winding-up speech before adjourning the Gagasan Rakyat Annual General Assembly. Hajiji further explained that GRS decided to shift its support to the MADANI Government after the previous administration was said to have expressed dislike for the term 'Borneo Bloc'. bootstrap slideshow 'I was shocked by those remarks... I reflected on it for a long time and eventually lost heart in them. After much consideration, I made the decision (to support the MADANI Government),' he said. Meanwhile, Hajiji told reporters that he would also be attending the Malaysia-Indonesia Annual Consultation in Jakarta, which, among others, would discuss matters concerning the Sulawesi Sea. -- BERNAMA
