Another Jets QB calamity averted as Justin Fields suffers dislocated toe

Whatever good feelings and optimism the New York Jets and their fans might have had about their new era — with their new brain trust of Coach Aaron Glenn and General Manager Darren Mougey — were put to a severe test Thursday. On only the second day of training camp, quarterback Justin Fields left the practice field riding in a cart after suffering a toe injury on his right foot while participating in a drill. The Jets signed Fields in March to replace Aaron Rodgers after Glenn and Mougey informed Rodgers that his disappointing, injury-marred stay with the franchise would end after two seasons. What a truly Jets-esque beginning to a new era, right? Perhaps not. The Jets said later it was determined after medical evaluation that Fields suffered a dislocated toe. His playing status will be listed as day-to-day, the team said, adding Fields 'avoided serious injury and significant missed time.' Another quarterback calamity may have been averted. Barring another setback, Fields presumably will be in the lineup for their Sept. 7 season opener against, fittingly, Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Meadowlands. 'I don't know the severity of the injury,' Glenn said at an earlier news conference, just after Thursday's practice. 'But I do know it's a toe on his right side. And, listen, we have an outstanding backup in Tyrod [Taylor], who's been in this league for around 14 years. So the leadership that he brings, listen, we're all good.' Glenn spoke at some length about his level of confidence in Taylor. 'If anything does happen to Justin, I don't think there's any drop-off as far as what we're going to do when it comes to play-calling,' Glenn said. 'Very similar when you talk about skill sets. So that was, like, enticing for us. And the leadership ability, things that we heard about him. I played against him before. And you can just tell the players really gravitate to him. When he says something, everybody really listens, even the coaching staff. He's been around this league a long time. He knows what it takes to win.' It's generally not a good sign when a coach professes his faith in the backup QB on Day 2 of training camp. And all of this came against the backdrop of the Jets' lucklessness and extended lack of on-field prosperity. Their 14-season drought without a playoff appearance is the longest current streak among all teams in the NFL, NBA, WNBA, NHL and MLB. The Jets have not made the postseason since the 2010 season, when they reached their second straight AFC championship game with Rex Ryan as their coach and Mark Sanchez as their quarterback. They've had nine straight losing seasons. And when hopes were raised with their blockbuster trade for Rodgers in 2023, the four-time MVP promptly suffered a torn Achilles' tendon on his left leg four offensive snaps into his debut. Before becoming a top coaching candidate with his work as defensive coordinator with the Detroit Lions, Glenn played eight seasons as a cornerback for the Jets and was selected to two Pro Bowls while with the team. He played for legendary coach Bill Parcells. He knows the issues and the angst involved. 'I've been there and done that,' Glenn said Thursday. 'And again, I just talked about what we did in Detroit. It becomes a mentality, for the most part. The thing that I have to do is to make sure that I can transition that mentality to everybody else. And I understand how this league is. I understand how social media starts to take over and everybody starts to panic. One thing I would say is we have a number of men in that locker room that wants to win. And we have a number of men in that locker room learning how to win. It's my job to make sure I push that over the edge. And that's my plan.' The Jets just signed wide receiver Garrett Wilson and cornerback Sauce Gardner to four-year contract extensions worth $130 million for Wilson and $120.4 million for Gardner. They are the foundational players of the Jets' rebuilding efforts. The Jets can only hope Fields can be added to that category after being signed in March to a two-year, $40 million deal. He played well in helping the Steelers to a 4-2 start last season before being benched by Coach Mike Tomlin in favor of Russell Wilson. Before that, Fields had an uneven three seasons with the Chicago Bears after being selected 11th overall in the 2021 NFL draft. A toe injury on the right foot of a right-handed quarterback could hinder his passing motion, given that it's his plant foot while throwing. And Fields is a quarterback who utilizes his mobility. So Thursday's injury initially was rather ominous. But maybe, just maybe all will be fine. Now, wouldn't that be a sign that times indeed have changed? 'I understand the outside noise,' Glenn said. 'I understand [what] the fans go through. I understand what you guys [reporters] go through. But it's really early. We have a lot of time. So we're going to focus on that.'

Lions' Dan Campbell shuts down practice after superstars fight multiple times

The Detroit Lions seem ready to hit someone in a different uniform. Unfortunately for the Lions, it's still only July. Lions head coach Dan Campbell had to shut down practice for the second consecutive day due to scuffles. This time, it was superstar wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown getting into it with defensive star Brian Branch. The Athletic's Colton Pouncy shared this information: "Dan Campbell stopped practice today after several scuffles broke out in the early portion. Brian Branch and Amon-Ra St. Brown went at it multiple times. Second day in a row practice was stopped. On Tuesday, it was for tackling in shorts. Pads go on tomorrow. They're ready." MORE: Micah Parsons risks temporary retirement, frozen contract if he leaves training camp Often, especially with teams with high expectations, this energy is just waiting to be harnessed for a common goal. The Lions certainly have a single pursuit: Win the Super Bowl. St. Brown and Branch will both be huge parts of that aspiration, and they know it. Back out on the field, they're clearly amped up and ready to shoot for the stars. The intensity should certainly continue when pads get put on for Friday's practice. The Detroit Pistons have signed former Washington Wizards wing Colby Jones to a two-way contract, a source confirmed to the Free Press. Jones was drafted 34th overall by the Sacramento Kings in 2023, following a three-year career at Xavier where he averaged 15 points, 5.7 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.3 steals while shooting 50.9% overall and 37.8% from 3. The 6-foot-6 wing was considered by draft pundits as a versatile two-way player, capable of knocking down shots, making smart passing reads and defending across positions. MORE: What to do with Jaden Ivey among 3 Detroit Pistons offseason questions He played limited minutes with the Kings before being dealt to the Wizards in February, where he averaged 8.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.3 steals across 15 games.
