UNESCO appoints Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation to high-level committee overseeing global teacher study
The decision was announced during the most recent meeting of the Teacher Task Force Steering Committee, held within the framework of Education 2030 goals. The session was attended by Ms Stefania Giannini, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Education, and Dr. Khalifa Al Suwaidi, Executive Director of Hamdan Foundation, alongside international experts and task force members from various countries.
Dr. Khalifa Al Suwaidi stated that the Foundation's inclusion in the High-Level Committee reflects its longstanding regional and international leadership in supporting teachers and promoting educational initiatives, under the direction of Sheikh Rashid Bin Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Supreme President of the Foundation.
His Excellency emphasized the Foundation's commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for teachers through improved policies, development opportunities, and societal recognition—factors that directly influence the sustainability and quality of education systems.
The UNESCO-led study is a landmark initiative designed to establish a robust and evidence-based understanding of the challenges facing teachers and the teaching profession globally. It comes at a time of increasing teacher shortages and declining interest in the profession among younger generations. The study also aims to inform international policy and strategy development to enhance teacher support, improve working conditions, and elevate the professional status of teachers.
Hamdan Foundation's participation in the committee underscores its role as a strategic partner in global efforts to advance education—particularly in reforming and innovating teacher preparation and training systems. Through its membership, the Foundation will provide technical and knowledge-based support to help ensure the success of this global initiative, in line with its mission to enhance education quality and promote educational excellence.
Ms Stefania Giannini expressed her appreciation to participating institutions, commending the Teacher Task Force for keeping the issue of teachers at the forefront of the global education agenda. The High-Level Steering Committee includes leading education experts, representatives of international organizations, and academic institutions. 'Tanamor': The Arabic word for bullying has bite
There is a bite to this Arabic word of the week. Tanamor, which means bullying, refers to an ill-judged action that is targeted and repetitious, whether through language, gestures or silence. Like most Arabic words, one of the most revealing aspects of tanamor is found in its trilateral root letters – noon, meem and ra – which spawn the derivative nimr, meaning tiger. That connection is not accidental. Tanamor evokes the ferocity and dominance associated with the tiger. Historically, the link was used positively, with tanamor referring to someone displaying unabashed bravado, but over the years – particularly in education and psychology texts – it has been reframed to mean bullying, both in the real and online world. Therefore, the word 'tanamor' is now prevalent in anti-bullying campaigns, particularly variations of the phrase ma'an did al-tanamor, meaning 'together against bullying,' which has been adopted by the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), Dubai Police and schools in Saudi Arabia. Perhaps because of its gravity and increasingly institutional tone, the word has been largely absent from the cultural sphere, including song lyrics and film titles. On the flip side, the Arabic language offers equally weighty words to celebrate qualities that stand in contrast to tanamor. One of these is a word we may use casually without fully registering its meaning – Al Karama. It may be popularly known to UAE residents as a Dubai suburb or a central Abu Dhabi street, but its definition – dignity – also features in anti-bullying texts. Once a word that celebrated boisterous behaviour, the evolution of tanamor reflects the dynamism of the Arabic language in giving shape to human experiences as they develop.

Sharjah's Faya added to UNESCO's World Heritage List
The UAE marked a milestone in heritage preservation as the UNESCO World Heritage Committee officially inscribed Sharjah's Faya Palaeolandscape on the World Heritage List. Recognised under the Cultural Landscape category, Faya was the only Arab site added this year and the second from the UAE after Al Ain's cultural sites were inscribed in 2011. Located in Sharjah's central region, Faya Palaeolandscape holds one of the world's oldest and most continuous records of early human habitation in arid environments, dating back over 200,000 years. It is an intact fossil desert landscape. Faya's critical role as a repeated destination for habitation has fundamentally altered our understanding of prehistoric life in Southeast Arabia, and represents a significant milestone in human evolution. Faya's inclusion came after a rigorous evaluation based on UNESCO's standards of Outstanding Universal Value. The achievement reflects Sharjah's long-standing vision to integrate heritage, education and sustainable development, in line with the commitment of H.H. Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, official ambassador of the nomination file, expressed gratitude to the World Heritage Committee for recognising Faya's significance. She said the inscription affirms Sharjah's role in early human history and highlights the Arabian Peninsula's position in the story of human migration from Africa. 'The stone tools found at Faya are testimony to the ingenuity of our ancestors and the deep roots of cultural tradition in our region,' she said, adding, 'We remain fully committed to protecting this site and ensuring its legacy continues to inspire future generations.' Eisa Yousif, Director-General of the Sharjah Archaeology Authority, said the inscription reflects shared ownership of world heritage. 'Faya now belongs to all peoples of the world, just as it did over 200,000 years ago,' he said, noting that this milestone represents the culmination of scientific research, cultural preservation and international cooperation. The UAE and Sharjah have adopted a comprehensive conservation plan for 2024–2030 to protect Faya's universal value, with a continued focus on research, education and sustainable tourism. For over a decade, Faya has also been a key site in UNESCO's Human Evolution, Adaptations, Dispersals and Social Developments (HEADS) Programme, alongside world-renowned locations such as Klasies River Caves and Wonderwerk Cave. Faya's inscription brings the total number of World Heritage sites to 1,226 across 168 countries, including 955 cultural, 231 natural and 40 mixed sites. The Arab region now hosts 96 such sites across 18 countries.

UAE summer: How to safely handle electric appliances, gas connection amid heat
With UAE currently in the hottest, driest phase of summer, authorities have warned residents to be aware of the adverse effects that heat has on different aspects of the house, transport, health and more. With high temperatures meaning that residents crank up energy usage lot more, it is essential to know how to handle appliances safely. Abu Dhabi has launched a campaign to promote awareness specifically on electricity- and gas-related risks during the summer. "At the start of summer, the difficulties linked to energy usage grow, be it inside residences or within commercial and service facilities," said Eng Abdul Rahman Al-Alawi, Health, Safety, and Environment Director at the Department of Energy (DoE). "The 'your safety is our priority' campaign is a clear manifestation of our duty to enhance a culture of safety." Tips to safely handle electrical appliances Do not connect multiple high consumption devices to a single power outlet Use a high-quality, certified power extension and avoid overloading it Ensure your air conditioning units are maintained and the filters are cleaned regularly Conduct regular inspections to ensure the safety of electrical appliances and wiring Always replace worn-out wires with new ones. Avoid covering them with adhesive tape Unplug unused devices to prevent overheating and reduce the risk of fires When leaving home for travel, disconnect the power from electrical devices and do not leave them running Avoid performing any electrical connections or repairs without consulting specialistis Approval from Taqa distribution must be obtained for any new electrical connections or modifications to existing approved connections Tips to safely handle gas connection Store gas cylinders in a well-ventilated area Cylinders must not be exposed to direct sunlight or any flame sources Avoid storing cylinders in vehicles or enclosed spaces Regularly check gas connections using water and soap, and never use a flame to detect leaks Always close the gas valve after each use, especially before going to sleep or leaving the house Ensure cylinder is properly and safely connected to appliances Ensure storage location allows easy access in case of emergencies Make sure to use national companies' gas cylinders Children and domestic helpers should be familiar with basic safety practices Ensure that gas leak detectors are installed and emergency contact numbers are clearly displayed in a visible and easily accessible location In case of a gas leak, do not use electrical devices or switches, close the gas valve, open the windows immediately, and seek help without delay During the safety campaign, Abu Dhabi authorities will distribute digital awareness materials via social media and websites. The department will also organise workshops and visits. The DoE has called on all residents and establishments in the emirate to actively engage with the campaign. It stressed the importance of following campaign updates and daily tips shared on DoE's official social media channels and website. 'Prevention is rooted in community awareness. Therefore, this campaign was conceived to connect with people through straightforward language and actionable content that aids in reducing accidents and encourages the sustainable consumption of energy," Al-Alawi added.
