Bihar election 2025: Tejashwi Yadav claims his name missing from Bihar voter list, BJP says, 'fake news alert'
With just months to go before the Bihar Assembly elections, the voter list revision process has sparked a political uproar, especially after RJD Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav discovered his own name missing from the electoral rolls during a live Press conference in Patna. In a dramatic moment, Yadav used the Election Commission of India's mobile App to check his voter status by entering his name and EPIC number, only to find no results.
Displaying the outcome to the media, he remarked sarcastically: 'My name is not in the voter list after the revision. It means I am not a resident of Bihar and I cannot contest the election.'
He added: 'As I am currently in Bihar, I can physically verify my details. But what about the poor and migrant voters who are working outside the state? If their names don't appear on the app, how will they know? Is the Election Commission is running a fake app?'

— Tejashwi Yadav (@TejashwiYdvRJD) August 2, 2025 Tejashwi Yadav alleges mass voter deletion ahead of elections
Tejashwi Yadav has raised serious concerns after more than 65 lakh voter names were reportedly deleted across Bihar during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) 2025 drive carried out by the Election Commission. This accounts for nearly 8.5 per cent of the total voters in the state.
Yadav said that he had properly submitted his voter form, which was collected by the Booth Level Officer (BLO) from his home. Yet, he says his name and those of many RJD staff members, a senior IAS officer, and his wife have gone missing from the voter list.
He claimed that 20,000 to 30,000 names have been removed from every Assembly constituency, and questioned whether this was a mistake or done with a political motive.
'There was no transparency. Political parties weren't even told before deleting names,' Yadav said, adding that even Supreme Court guidelines were not followed during the process. Tejashwi Yadav slams Election Commission, calls for voter list transparency
Yadav has strongly criticised the Election Commission, accusing it of acting under political pressure. He called it a 'Godi Commission,' a term used for institutions seen as supporting the ruling party without question. Yadav claimed, 'The Election Commission is taking orders from Gujarat. It has become a puppet.'
He demanded that the Commission make public all details of the deleted voters, including EPIC numbers, full addresses, and polling booth information, so that political parties can cross-check and ensure no genuine voter has been wrongly removed.
He said the lack of this information makes it hard to hold anyone accountable and affects fair democratic processes.
Yadav also shared that an RJD team met with the Election Commission on Friday to raise their concerns, but their issues were not taken seriously.
Due to the large number of deleted names, Yadav urged the Commission and the government to reconsider the election timeline and give more time for people to file objections and corrections.
'Lakhs of people can't be removed from the voter list without notice. People should be given a fair chance to raise objections and get their names added again,' he said. EC denies Tejashwi's claim
The ECI denied the allegation, stating that Tejashwi's name was indeed present in the roll. BJP leader Amit Malviya also posted a screenshot of the draft roll on X, showing Tejashwi Yadav's name at Serial Number 416. 'Fake News Alert. Tejashwi Yadav's claim that his name is missing from the electoral roll post Special Intensive Revision is false. His name appears at Serial Number 416. Please verify facts before amplifying misinformation. Deliberate attempts to mislead voters must be called out,' Malviya said on X.
As per the current guidelines, voters can still submit their claims and objections until September 1, 2025. Anyone whose name has been wrongly deleted can fill out Form 6 along with the required documents to restore their name in the list.
Patna has the highest number of 46,51,694 electors followed by Purvi Champaran (33,73,055), Muzaffarpur (32,03,370), Madhubani (30,24,245), Gayaji (29,01,493), Samastipur (28,61,415), Saran (28,60,885) and Darbhanga (27,99,852). Sheohar accounts for the lowest number of voters at 2,95,929, followed by Arwal (5,11,568), Lakhisarai (7,33,600), Jahanabad (7,81,313) and Munger (9,75,222).

UP CM attacks Cong, other oppn parties on Malegaon case, Op Sindoor

Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday attacked Congress and other opposition parties stating that as soon as the truth in the Malegaon case came to light, Congress's conspiracies were exposed. Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath and other BJP leaders at a party meeting in Lucknow on August 3. (HT photo) He was speaking at the BJP's organisational meeting held at the Indira Gandhi Pratishthan to discuss the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign and other organisational matters. Addressing the gathering, the CM said those who branded the saffron as a symbol of terror, thereby tarnishing the country's faith, now stand exposed before the public. He was referring to the special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court's acquittal of all seven accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case. On the occasion, Yogi also targeted Congress and opposition accusing them of spreading misinformation about 'Operation Sindoor'. 'The opposition is acting as a shield for anti-national forces,' he said. The CM also described the voter revision campaign as the foundation of democracy, emphasising that the task is not just an administrative process but also a political responsibility. He urged every BJP worker to ensure that no eligible voter is left out from their booths' voter list, saying adding young voters who have turned 18 is a sign of organisational maturity. On the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign from August 13 to 15, CM Yogi asserted that the campaign and the mantra of 'Swadeshi Products in Every Hand' are crucial steps towards realising the vision of a self-reliant India. He called upon the workers to join the campaign by hoisting the Triranga at their homes, taking selfies, engaging people and promoting local crafts by adopting swadeshi products like ODOP. This, he said, is the most powerful way to economically strengthen India and give a strong response to those who try to blackmail the nation. The CM was referring to the trade tariff sanctions imposed by US President Donald Trump on India. BJP state chief Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary said the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign, inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has become a powerful expression of national patriotism. 'This campaign aims to awaken every citizen's sense of pride, faith, and responsibility towards the nation,' he said. Chaudhary criticised the opposition for spreading lies and negativity while the BJP government worked tirelessly for public welfare. He urged BJP workers to engage wholeheartedly in the voter revision campaign, keeping in mind the upcoming elections. Also speaking on the occasion, deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya described the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign as a national revolution of patriotism. He said the campaign has become a powerful medium to connect every individual with reverence, faith, and self-pride towards the Triranga. Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak said the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign is a national festival marking the spirit of patriotism. It's not just about hoisting flags but a medium to spread India's identity, unity and self-respect to every home, Pathak added. He emphasised that a BJP worker is not just a representative of the organisation but a carrier of the consciousness of nation-building. 'By taking the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign to every village and city, workers must ensure that the Tiranga, a symbol of India's honour and glory, is established in every citizen's heart and home,' Pathak said. The meeting was attended by senior BJP leaders, including state general secretary (organisation) Dharmpal Singh, national co-convenor of the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign Rituraj Sinha and national convenor of the election contact campaign Om Pathak. Party's state general secretary Govind Narayan Shukla conducted the meeting.

CPI(M) and Congress accuse BJP of claiming credit for the nuns' release to score political brownie points

Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] and Congress have accused Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to score brownie points with the sizeable Christian community in Kerala and the influential Church leadership in allegedly trying to rack up political credit for the release of two Kerala nuns on bail from a prison in BJP-ruled Chattissgarh on Saturday. The sisters, Preeti Mary and Vandana Francis, were remand prisoners in the Durg Central jail since their arrest on July 25 on charges of attempting to spirit out three women to Agra for conversion to Christianity. BJP State president Rajiv Chandrasekhar's comment that Congress and CPI(M) 'political theatre' in front of the Durg Central Prison had impeded the BJP-ruled Central and Chattissgarh State governments efforts to secure early bail for the sisters seemed to snuff out the geniality that politicians from Kerala briefly displayed while rubbing shoulders and distributing sweets to welcome the nuns at a convent in Chhattisgarh after their release on bail on Saturday. CPI(M) State Committee member John Brittas, MP, on Sunday stated that secular parties had championed the cause of justice for the sisters because they viewed the unjust arrest through the prism of the Constitution and not political expediency. Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan had earlier accused the BJP of shedding crocodile tears for the nuns while allowing the serious charges of human trafficking and forced conversion slapped on them to stay. Divergent views Meanwhile, schisms seemed to develop in the Church leadership over the question of whether the BJP national leadership had genuinely come to the aid of the nuns, as the party has claimed. For one, the Irinjalakuda diocese read out a pastoral letter in Churches on Sunday, claiming the Central and Chhattisgarh governments had done little for the nuns' release despite a national outcry. Irinjalakuda Diocese Bishop Mar Pauly Kannookadan dismissed the suggestion that some prelates, notably Archbishop Joseph Pamplany, praised Prime Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for intervening on the nuns' behalf. 'The Church has a clear political view. However, it is not politically partisan,' he added.

PM Modi, Amit Shah meet President Murmu separately

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday called on President Droupadi Murmu separately within hours at the Rashtrapati Bhavan here. It was not known the reasons behind the subsequent meetings of the prime minister and the home minister with the President. "Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan," the Rashtrapati Bhavan said on 'X'. Hours later, the Rashtrapati Bhavan again wrote on 'X', "Union Minister for Home Affairs and Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan." The home minister also wrote on 'X' sharing a picture of his meeting with President Murmu. "Called on Hon'ble President Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji at Rashtrapati Bhavan." However, there is no words so far from the prime minister's office. This was the first meeting of the prime minister with the President after his recent visit to the United Kingdom and the Maldives. The meetings came against the backdrop of the logjam in Parliament over the Opposition's demand for a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar ahead of the assembly elections in the state. Except discussions in both Houses on Operation Sindoor, Parliament has seen little business ever since the Monsoon session began on July 21. Also, the Lok Sabha last week approved the extension of the President's rule in Manipur for six more months, while the Rajya Sabha is yet to take up the motion for discussion. The President's rule was imposed in the Northeastern state on February 13. The prime minister's meeting with the President also came days after US President Donald Trump announced 25 per cent tariffs on exports from India and an unspecified penalty because of New Delhi's purchases of Russian military equipment and oil. The meetings also came nearly two weeks after Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21 tendered his resignation as vice president to the President citing health grounds. The vice president also functions as the chairman of Rajya Sabha. The Election Commission last week announced that election of vice president will take place on September 9. The electoral college for the vice-presidential election comprises all elected and nominated members of the Rajya Sabha and all members of the Lok Sabha.
