Fugitive wanted in 12-year-old fake currency case extradited by UAE

New Delhi, Jun 20 (PTI) A fugitive with a 12-year-old Interpol red notice against him and wanted by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in connection with a fake currency racket was extradited by the UAE on Friday in an operation coordinated by the CBI, officials said.
Beary was wanted by the NIA in a case of counterfeiting Indian currency notes, cheating and criminal conspiracy.
He was arrested in the UAE in 2015 and since then his extradition proceedings were going on.
He allegedly procured high-quality Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICNs) in Dubai and transported the same to Bengaluru through Sharjah.
'The CBI got the Red Notice published against the subject on December 30, 2013, through Interpol on the request of NIA. The accused subject was arrested in the UAE and an extradition request was sent to the UAE through MHA and MEA,' the spokesperson said.
The NIA said that soon after the recovery of FICNs from four different locations in Kasaragod district in Kerala, it secured the revocation of Baery's passport and a red corner notice was also issued.
'In 2015, the absconding accused was located and arrested by the UAE authorities, following which an extradition request was sent to that country by the NIA. On completion of the process, the UAE authorities extradited the accused on June 19,' the NIA said in a statement.
NIA investigations into the case revealed that Beary, a native of Karnataka's Udupi district, conspired with the co-accused to procure high-quality FICNs with a face value of Rs 31 lakh from the UAE, it said.
'The FICNs were trafficked into India by another accused, Usman, by flight through Bengaluru. The accused then circulated the FICNs in and around Kasaragod district,' the statement said.
The NIA has so far chargesheeted six accused, including Beary, in the cases under various sections of IPC, it said. PTI ABS AKV ARI

610 antiquities retrieved from six countries including US during 2020-24: Govt
New Delhi, Jul 21 (PTI) A total of 610 antiquities were retrieved from the US, the UK and four other countries over the last five years, the government informed Parliament on Monday. Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat shared this information in a written reply to a question on whether the government has conducted any survey or study regarding theft of Indian artefacts in the last five years; and details of the total number of artefacts recovered, still missing and unaccounted for over the same period. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) maintains up-to-date data of theft cases in respect of protected monuments, sites and museums under its jurisdiction, he said. On retrieval of antiquities from abroad, according to the data shared by him, in 2020, three artefacts were brought back from Australia and five from the UK. In 2021, 157 antiquities were brought back from the US and one each from Canada and the UK. In 2023 and 2024, the figures stood at 105 (the US) and 297 (the US) respectively. For the US, the total number of retrieved antiquities for 2020-24 stood at 559, and for Australia, the corresponding figures stood at 34. The total number spanning the six countries — the US, the UK, Australia, Canada, Italy and Thailand — for 2020-24 stands at 610. In response to another query, Shekhawat said, a total of 655 antiquities have been retrieved from foreign countries since 1976. Army jawan held for 2020 Vapi double murder
Surat: Sleuths of the Valsad local crime branch on Monday arrested an Army jawan, Pankaj Kumar Shah (34), for his alleged involvement in the Jan 2020 double murder at Chanod Colony in Vapi town of Valsad district. Shah allegedly shot two women dead with a pistol, at the home of one of them, as part of a Rs 2.5 lakh contract killing deal. Police had earlier arrested Bipin Mahanto, the son of one of the victims, his friend Kundan Giri, and Shah's accomplice, Mukesh Singh. Shah had been on the run ever since the crime and kept moving about, investigators said. He was finally caught at a hotel near Cheethwari in Rajasthan. Police said he kept moving between Greater Noida and Rajasthan. On Jan 11, 2020, a brutal double murder unfolded. Rekha Brahmdev Mahanto and her friend Anita alias Durga Shekhar Khadse were fatally shot by assailants on a red motorcycle without a registration number. The investigation revealed a conspiracy allegedly orchestrated by Bipin Mahanto, Rekha's own son. Suspecting that his mother was having an extramarital affair, Bipin allegedly plotted her murder. Shah first scouted around in Vapi in 2019 before returning to execute the killing. Shah roped in Singh, a resident of Bihar, to help in the crime. In Jan 2020, they came to Vapi, where Bipin Mahanto arranged a motorcycle for them. On the day of the killing, Giri, Shah and Singh went to the spot on a motorcycle. Giri got off at KBS Colony and kept watch. Shah and Singh proceeded to Mahanto's residence, where Singh waited outside while Shah went in with a pistol. Shah shot Mahanto and when Khadse emerged on hearing the gunshots, he shot her as well. The trio fled the scene on the motorcycle. The other three accused had been caught earlier while Shah remained at large. The investigation revealed that Shah was posted as a craftsman with 119 FWC 135 Brigade at Manjakote in Jammu and Kashmir. He has been a working member of the 606 Electronics and Mechanical Engineering (EME) battalion based in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, for 15 years.

Two caught with 28kg of gold paste at Surat airport
Surat: The Central Industrial Security Force ( CISF ) thwarted a gold smuggling attempt at the Surat international airport on Sunday and seized 28kg of gold paste, which two passengers from Dubai had allegedly concealed on their bodies. The paste is estimated to contain 23kg of gold, worth about Rs 23 lakh. The customs department is yet to declare the exact amount of gold recovered and its value. After the arrival of Air India Flight IX-174 from Dubai, a CISF soldier monitoring the international arrivals area got suspicious of two passengers who had disembarked at about 10pm. Their unusual behaviour prompted the CISF vigilance team to conduct a thorough examination of their belongings. Working with customs officers, the CISF team discovered the gold paste, ingeniously concealed on the bodies of the two individuals. The gold paste method is commonly used by smugglers to evade detection. Customs officials launched an investigation to uncover the broader network behind this smuggling attempt. The identities of the passengers have not been disclosed as the investigation is ongoing. The accused will likely be produced in court on Tuesday. The process to recover the gold from the paste is underway.
