The accused defrauded these women of ₹40 lakh and had been cheating them for the past six years, according to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Saravanan Thangamani.
The accused, Dayali Uppal, is a resident of the NTPC Police Station, District Pedapalli, Telangana. "Today in Thana, Chitaipur Commissionerate Varanasi, we arrested one suspected person named Dayali Upaliya, who is a resident of NTPC Police station, District Pedapalli, Telangana.
We found out that he had cheated almost 25 plus women by creating fake matrimonial profiles and has defrauded these women to the tune of ₹40 lakhs so far and he has been doing it for the last six years," Thangamani told ANI.
"We recovered army uniforms from him. He also has in his custody fake name plates in the names of Major Amit and Major Joseph. In addition to this, we also obtained a few fake ID cards from central police organisations, including the National Investigation Agency, the Territorial Army, and the Jammu & Kashmir Police," he further said.
The police also recovered printing papers that are used for creating these fake ID cards.
"We also got hold of the printing materials, the papers that are used for creating these fake ID cards, and it also came to our notice that he had already married three women by posing himself as an army officer. Based on the complaint by a lady from Chandauli district who is presently residing in Commissionerate Varanasi, she had made a complaint that she was in a relationship with him and when she was asking to legalise the marriage and asking for documents, he was not ready to give them...Further legal action is being taken...," DCP Crime T Saravanan added.

When asked, accused Dalai Uppal told that he used to contact different girls through a matrimonial site and trap them in love by telling them that he is an army officer and take a huge amount of money from them.
"I trapped the plaintiff in a love trap through a matrimonial site by telling them that I am an army officer by the name of Joseph and married her about five years ago. After marriage, I and the plaintiff lived together. To date, I have taken about six lakh rupees from the plaintiff. The plaintiff is an officer in the bank. When she was not at home, I used to talk to other girls. To date, I am in contact with about twenty-five girls from different states: Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Punjab, Uttarakhand and West Bengal. I am in contact with them and have taken money from them. I had searched the IDs of army officers on the internet and made them myself using a printer. Using them, I could easily trap girls in my love trap," he said.
He said that to impress the girls, he made army uniforms, medals, a fake name plate, fake ID cards of the Army, NIA, Jammu Kashmir Police, Territorial Army and also bought a fake pistol.
"So that no one suspects that I am not in the army. I used to talk to different girls using different fake names and meet them. That is why I had made fake ID cards in different names. I have got my fake ID card, army uniform, printer machine, medals, name plate, Aadhar card and fake pistol recovered by the police. Accepting my crime, I am repeatedly apologising for my mistake," he added. (ANI)

'Love Jihad' Accused Says He Is A Victim, Wants To Convert Again

Agra: A man arrested in a large-scale illegal religious conversion racket has said that he is also a victim and that he wants to convert to Hinduism again, sources told NDTV on Monday. Mohammad Ali is among 10 people who were arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Police from six states in the 'love jihad' case last Saturday. The probe began in Agra in March after two sisters -- aged 33 and 18 -- were reported missing. Agra Police Commissioner Deepak Kumar had said preliminary investigations found that the sisters were targeted by a gang involved in ' love jihad ' and radicalisation. "We found clues about their funding originating from the US and Canada," he had said. . — POLICE COMMISSIONERATE AGRA (@agrapolice) July 19, 2025 Ali, a resident of Rajasthan who was Piyush Panwar before converting, has told the police about the conversion network. Lodged in an Agra jail, he broke down during the initial interrogation by the police and said that he wanted to return home, sources said. He also said he wanted to leave Islam and become a Hindu. He said he wants to apologise to his parents, who broke ties with him after he converted to Islam. How Piyush Panwar Became Mohammad Ali The story of Piyush Panwar becoming Mohammad Ali started in 2021, when he first met Shana, a woman from Rajasthan's Tonk. They then fell in love and decided to get married, sources said. Shana, however, put a condition, saying that Piyush will have to accept Islam. Piyush agreed and changed his name to Mohammad Ali in the same year. Shana then rejected him after he was converted. Ali, whose family had cut ties with him, then decided not to convert again and married a Muslim girl from Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly, according to sources. How Mohammad Ali Became Part Of Conversion Racket While trying to convert to Islam, he had come into contact with Mohammad Gaus, a member of the Popular Front of India (PFI), which was banned by the Centre in 2022 for its alleged links with global terrorist organisations. Through Gaus, he met a cleric, Kaleem Siddiqui, in Delhi, who was convicted in a separate conversion case last year. Ali then went to West Bengal for religious education. He stayed in the madrasas in Asansol, Bardhaman and Katwapara for three months. About a year ago, he came in contact with a woman, Ayesha, from Goa on Instagram. Ayesha, who is also among the 10 people arrested by the Uttar Pradesh police, used to record the names of the girls who were converted to Islam. The police have said that Ali is a close associate of Ayesha. Ali, who was arrested in Jaipur, has also told the police that the members of the PFI and the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) are also linked with their network. Besides Ali and Ayesha, the other accused arrested in the case under 'Mission Asmita', an ongoing initiative aimed at dismantling such illegal syndicates, have been identified as Hasan Ali and Osama from Kolkata, Rahman Qureshi from Agra, Abu Talib from Muzaffarnagar (Uttar Pradesh), Abdur Rehman from Dehradun (Uttarakhand), Mohammad Ali and Junaid Qureshi from Rajasthan, and Mustafa from Delhi. "The modus operandi of the gang involved illegal conversion and radicalisation bears a signature of ISIS," the police had said. The arrests come days after another man, Chhangur Baba, alias Jamaluddin, the mastermind of a religious conversion gang, was arrested by Uttar Pradesh Police's Anti-Terrorism Squad.

UP STF Nabs Woman In Goa For Receiving Foreign Funding To Facilitate Religious Conversion

A 26-year-old woman named Ayesha was arrested in Goa by the UP STF for allegedly receiving foreign funds to facilitate religious conversions in India. In a joint operation between the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) and the Goa Police, a 26-year-old woman, identified as Ayesha, was arrested in Goa on charges related to religious conversion. The development comes as the Uttar Pradesh Police continues to make arrests in alleged links with the Chhangur Baba gang, accused of large-scale religious conversions and receiving foreign funds through the hawala route. According to sources, Ayesha, originally from Odisha and currently residing in Goa with her family, had allegedly converted to Islam and was receiving significant foreign funding. Sources said that these funds were being used to facilitate religious conversions across various parts of the country. The UP Police, with the assistance of local authorities in Goa, took Ayesha into custody and have since brought her to Uttar Pradesh for further questioning. Sources in the STF said the arrest was a major breakthrough as Ayesha was a key link in an international funding network. She received large sums of money from abroad, which were then used to promote religious conversion activities within India. On July 20, eight people, including a woman, were arrested in connection with a case of religious conversion in Uttar Pradesh's Pratapgarh. According to Additional Superintendent of Police (West) Sanjay Rai, acting on a tip-off, a police team searched Kachha Dube Ka Purwa village under Jethwara police station limits and arrested the accused. During the search, police recovered religious posters, a wooden cross, religious literature, and photographs of Jesus Christ, officials said. Police took action after allegations that the accused were involved in religious conversion, luring people to adopt Christianity, they said. Besides, police also arrested a woman whose identity was not disclosed. A case was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 3/5(1) of the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Act, 2021. On July 19, the Uttar Pradesh Police, under Mission Asmita, arrested 10 individuals across six states in a crackdown on an unlawful religious conversion syndicate. view comments First Published: July 21, 2025, 08:37 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
