Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in a statement over the weekend that authorities arrested Steven Eberly after receiving multiple 911 calls about a dramatic scene playing out near Eberly's home in Houston.
Eberly, 36, had allegedly hired a local man 'to help him move furniture' at his house on May 16, according to Sheriff Gonzalez. The man was in the process of helping Eberly move a heavy box on his driveway when he noticed 'a deceased individual' inside the box he and Eberly were attempting to move.
According to home surveillance video obtained by KPRC, the man jumped back into his pickup truck and attempted to flee the scene after discovering the dead body. Eberly then chased the man down as he was driving away, reportedly jumping onto the truck bed and attempting to break the windows of the vehicle in order to stop the man from getting away.
The scene ended when the man's truck struck another vehicle, resulting in Eberly injuring and bloodying his head. Harris County Sheriff's Office Lieutenant Abraham Alanis said at a news conference later outside the home that authorities took Eberly into custody as he was walking back to his house, still with blood on his head.
Eberly was later taken to a hospital for a medical evaluation before being officially arrested and charged with murder, according to police.
Harris County inmate records reviewed by PEOPLE show Eberly remains in custody on a $2 million bond on the murder charge. He was also charged with tampering with evidence and attempting to take an officer's weapon, county jail records show.
'This was a strange one,' Sheriff Gonzalez said in a statement Sunday, adding that officials 'determined the deceased individual at the home was a contractor who had been working at the home.'

The victim was identified as Luis Silva Mendez, USA Today reported. The outlet added that a motive has yet to be determined by police.
'He's just somebody that's probably taking care of his family that had to do housework and had to do mowing and there's no way that what happened to him should have happened,' a neighbor told local KPRC.

'The original call came in at 7:53 in the morning," the spokesperson says. "The deputy did not meet with them at the residence until 9:45, and the deputy advised that the complainant had left the scene at 11:34.' Police confirm that Kelley indicated she "needed to gather items at the house" and escorted her around as she tried several ways to enter the home. However, Kelley was unsuccessful in her attempts as the spokesperson says, "It appeared that the locks on the house had been changed." Per officials, Kelley 'made some phone calls to family, had some conversations with family [but] still wasn't able to gain access into the house and ultimately left.' She "never made contact with anyone" that might have been in the house and it is not known whether anyone was home at the time. "We didn't have any contact with anyone [who might have been at the residence]. But we were never inside either," the spokesperson says. A Toronto-area man known to associates as the "Russian" – accused of conspiring to smuggle cocaine on behalf of a former Olympic snowboarder – has agreed to be extradited to the U.S. Rakhim Ibragimov appeared in a downtown Toronto court Tuesday morning, for what was scheduled to be an hours-long extradition hearing. Instead, Ibragimov's lawyer Harval Bassi told the judge his client was consenting to his surrender to the U.S. "That is correct," Ibragimov told Ontario Superior Court Justice Peter Bawden. The Uzbekistan-born Ibragimov, 48, faces conspiracy charges in Los Angeles, where he's expected to stand trial early next year alongside several other associates of Ryan Wedding. Wedding, who competed for Canada as a snowboarder at the 2002 Olympic Games in Utah, is listed as one of the FBI's 10 most-wanted fugitives. Born in Thunder Bay, Ont., he's suspected of living in Mexico, while leading a cartel-linked drug-trafficking organization tied to multiple murders. Kiran Gill, a lawyer representing the Attorney General of Canada told court Ibragimov had been identified as a "courier" for Wedding's network. According to U.S. investigators, Ibragimov was caught near L.A. in April 2024 as he loaded boxes filled with 375 kilograms of cocaine – apparently destined for Canada – into his rental car. Wedding's network is accused of using the area as a logistics hub for its $1-billion US cocaine and fentanyl smuggling operation. At the time, Ibragimov was detained and then allowed to return to Ontario.
