'When you see two talented guys just competing, it's truly fun to see'
All eyes are on the New Orleans Saints quarterback battle this summer, and that includes the big guys up front charged with keeping the passers clean. Veteran right guard Cesar Ruiz spoke about the competition brewing between second-year backup Spencer Rattler and rookie draft pick Tyler Shough on NFL Network's Good Morning Football program Friday morning, and he's already feeling energized by what the two young guns have shown him.
"Two different quarterbacks, right?" Ruiz began. "Everybody has their superpower, everybody is good at their thing. Spencer has something, and I'm like, 'Hey, he got that.' Tyler will come in there, and I'm like, 'Hey... This is just talent.' When you see two talented guys just competing, it's truly fun to see."
Ruiz acknowledged that, just because the Saints drafted Shough highly at No. 40 overall, it doesn't mean they have to play him if they have a better option. He remembers coming in off the bench to start his rookie season as the No. 24 pick. He remembers seeing a lot of quarterbacks start for New Orleans in his five-year career, too: Derek Carr (27 games) Andy Dalton (14), Drew Brees (12), Jameis Winston (10), Taysom Hill (9), Spencer Rattler (6), and Trevor Siemian (4), plus Ian Book (1) and Jake Haener (1).
He continued, via NFL.com's Nick Shook: "That quarterback competition right now is great to see. It's great because it's two young guys who are both gonna leave their footprint somehow, someway in the NFL, and they're both extremely talented. It's just great to see those two compete and learn and just grow. Both of them are competing. Both of them are progressing. I just love seeing the progress of both of them."
Like it or not, there isn't a more important position in pro sports than quarterback. No single player more greatly impacts the game than the passer, and the Saints will go as far as Shough or Rattler can take them. It says a lot that, whether the questions were presented this way or not, Ruiz spoke about this as a two-horse race. The Saints also have third-year pro Jake Haener and undrafted rookie QB Hunter Dekkers on the training camp roster, but neither of them are expected to threaten the two guys at the top of the depth chart. Barring a big surprise it'll be either Rattler or Shough leading the huddle in September. And as far as Ruiz is concerned? He trusts his coaches to make the right choice based off how those guys compete later this summer.

Rashid Shaheed's 70-yard touchdown catch is the Saints Play of the Day

We're up to Day 70 in our countdown to the New Orleans Saints' season opener, which means our pick for the Saints Play of the Day is this 70-yard touchdown pass from Derek Carr to Rashid Shaheed. You can see the play here, but the whole highlight reel is worth watching. The Saints routed the Dallas Cowboys in Week 2 last season. Hopefully they can do the same when the Arizona Cardinals visit this September. It was a great play by all involved. Carr executed the play action fake and drove upfield, stepping up in the pocket under pressure; he took a big hit from rookie defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa after the throw, but it was worth it. His pass hit Shaheed in stride and the receiver strode untouched into the end zone with a pair of Cowboys defenders trailing him. This gave the Saints a lead they wouldn't relinquish. By the end of the afternoon, they outscored the Cowboys 44-19 and outgained Dallas by 432 yards to 353. It was everything we hoped to see out of them: an efficient passing attack (Carr only threw 16 passes, completing 11 of them for 243 yards) and effective running game that attacked the defense from all angles. The defense buckled down and twice stopped the Cowboys on fourth down, too. It's just a shame they couldn't sustain this success. Injuries hammered New Orleans and their season never returned to these heights, but on this afternoon in Week 2? Things were good, and Shaheed's big play was a big part of it.

Great-grandson fights to honour Southampton football hero

A great-grandson is fighting to see a Saints legend recognised in football history. Ted Drake, the Southampton-born striker who became an Arsenal legend, has narrowly missed out on entry to the National Football Museum's Hall of Fame in Manchester. Advertisement Drake, who played for Saints from 1931 to 1934 before joining Arsenal, has been described by his great-grandson Liam Harding as "arguably one of the greatest players to play the game in his time." Liam, who put forward the nomination, said: "It's really disappointing that my Great Grandfather was denied nomination into the Footballers Hall of Fame. "He is arguably one of the greatest players to play the game in his time alongside the likes of Stanley Matthews, Alex James, Nat Lofthouse etc who are all in the Hall of Fame where he belongs also. "He inspired millions of people and no man since has scored more goals in an English top-flight game of football. Advertisement "It's essential for the history of the game and its supporters that his name is remembered on a national scale for eternity in the Footballers Hall of Fame where he deserves to be for the feats he set." He will automatically be considered again during the next round of nominations in October. During his time at Arsenal, Drake set several records, including scoring seven goals in a single top-flight match on December 14, 1935. Advertisement He remains Arsenal's fastest player to reach 100 goals, achieving the milestone in just 108 games. He also holds the record for most goals in a single season for the club, with 44. After injury ended his playing career, Drake moved into management and led Chelsea to their first league title in 1955. He became the first person to win the English top flight as both a player and a manager. Liam has dedicated much of this year to preserving his great-grandfather's legacy. In February, he worked with Arsenal to install a memorial plaque at Highbury, where Drake's ashes have rested since 1995. He hopes that Drake, currently Arsenal's fifth-highest all-time goalscorer with 139 goals, will be recognised in the next round of Hall of Fame nominations.
