Viktor Gyokeres 'willing to make major sacrifice for Arsenal move this summer' - as Gunners close in on deal for Sporting Lisbon star

Daily Mail18 hours ago
Viktor Gyokeres is reportedly willing to give up a significant amount of his future salary to force through a move to Arsenal this summer.
Mail Sport reported over the weekend how the Gunners are finally closing in on the Swedish striker in a deal worth up to £70million after a lengthy pursuit.
Further talks were taking place on Sunday night over the structure of achievable bonus payments on the fee with the 27-year old having already agreed personal terms on a five-year contract.
Gyokeres, who has been adamant throughout the summer that he only wants to join Arsenal, came back into focus after RB Leipzig failed to budge sufficiently in their valuation of Benjamin Sesko.
Reports have claimed Gyokeres will refuse to return for pre-season training as part of his attempts to force through a move and Portuguese outlet Record say the Sporting star is now happy to go even further.
The outlet suggested that the 27-year-old has expressed his happiness to forego €2million (£1.73m) from his proposed five-year Arsenal contract so that the money could be used to increase the Gunners' bid to Sporting for his services.
Gyokeres is said to have been the driving force behind this move, outlining his determination to play at the Emirates next season.
As a result, the report claims Arsenal's latest bid came in at an initial €65m (£56.2m) with a further €15m (13m) in add-ons.
Meanwhile, the Gunners have been locked in negotiations with Sporting over Gyokeres for a number of months and the situation finally seems to be nearing a conclusion.
Man United head coach Ruben Amorim had looked to reunite with Gyokeres this summer but he was informed last month that his target only wanted to join Arsenal.
The development comes shortly before Arteta's side, who have already added Kepa and Martin Zubimendi this summer, return for pre-season training.
As reported by Mail Sport, Arteta had been keen to sign a new striker before his squad jets out to Singapore on July 19 to begin their tour of Asia.
An irritated Gyokeres had previously accused Sporting of rowing back on an agreement to let him leave for £60m, to which club president Frederico Varandas said he had received no offers and vowed he would not succumb to 'blackmails and insults'.
The forward scored an incredible 97 goals in 102 games over the past two seasons in Portugal and is under contract until 2028. He pushed back on lucrative approaches from Saudi Pro League sides Al-Hilal and Al-Qadsiah earlier this summer.
Gyokeres was also on Juventus' radar but the Serie A giants have missed out, too.
Initially, RB Leipzig's Sesko looked to be Arsenal's primary target at No 9 but attention has shifted to Gyokeres. Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins was also considered.
Gyokeres moved to England in 2017-18 when he joined Brighton, but he made just eight appearances for the club, scoring one goal.
He spent loan spells at St Pauli and Swansea before switching to Coventry, initially on a loan deal, where he scored 43 goals over two-and-a-half seasons.
That form earned him a €24m (£20.7m) move to Sporting and after two superb years in Portugal, Gyokeres is now set to return to the UK for the next chapter of his career.

Ministers in talks with City over climate finance for disaster-hit nations

Senior Cabinet ministers including Rachel Reeves and David Lammy are to meet City chiefs for talks on how to unlock UK private sector climate finance and disaster risk insurance for countries facing extreme weather events. The Foreign Secretary has pledged £12 million from the Government's tightened aid budget in a bid to enable faster payouts for nations experiencing climate shocks like hurricanes and tornadoes. Mr Lammy will join the Chancellor, Energy Secretary Ed Miliband and Environment Secretary Steve Reed for the first meeting between multiple Cabinet ministers and finance leaders on Tuesday. The group is expected to discuss how the sector can play a part in channelling investment into climate initiatives in emerging markets. The Government hopes the £12 million for pre-arranged finance for disaster relief and risk insurance will cut the cost of responding to extreme weather events, and the time it takes for countries to recover from such shocks. This funding is triggered by certain warning signs — such as a forecast or weather event itself — to enable faster payouts, the Foreign Office said. It comes after the Government slashed the UK's overseas aid budget from 0.5% of gross national income to 0.3% in order to pay for increased defence spending. The UK's climate finance commitments come from its aid budget. The Foreign Secretary said: 'The climate and nature crisis is the greatest global challenge we face. Failure to act will cause unprecedented environmental damage, fuelling displacement, conflict and famine. 'Tackling this crisis is also a huge opportunity for people and businesses here in the UK, delivering on our Plan for Change. The green sector is worth trillions of pounds, and I'm determined that we seize on the economic growth, jobs and security it offers. 'The City of London, the world's leading sustainable development financing hub, has a crucial role to play in this.'

Eze makes decision over Arsenal transfer as Liverpool consider hijacking move

Eberechi Eze's preferred club has been revealed after Liverpool entered the race to sign the top Arsenal target. The England international has emerged as a hugely attractive player this summer following an incredible season for Crystal Palace. He produced 14 goals and 11 assists in 43 appearances, including the winner in the FA Cup final against Manchester City which secured the club's first ever major trophy. Both Manchester United and Tottenham had long-standing interest in the attacking midfielder but have pulled out of the race to focus on other targets, namely Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Mohammed Kudus. That has cleared the way for Arsenal to swoop in and sign up Eze, who was released from the Hale End Academy at the age of 13. However, as the Independent report, there are two major obstacles in the Gunners' way. Firstly, Palace insist that their talisman will not be sold for anything less than his £68million release clause – £60m up front and the rest in add-ons. Arsenal have it in their budget to make two massive signings and a number of small purchases like Kepa Arrizabalaga and Christian Norgaard. With Martin Zubimendi and a new striker – very likely to be Viktor Gyokeres – their marquee signings, Mikel Arteta will need to sell off some players first before he can think about Eze. Moreover, personal terms have been agreed with Noni Madueke and with Chelsea wanting £50m for the winger, a deal for the Eagles star becomes even trickier. Secondly, it is said that Liverpool are now considering whether to make a move for Eze having kept tabs on him for a while. The Reds have already spent close to £200m this summer, over half of which on attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz, and are also very interested in signing Palace captain and centre-back Marc Guehi. No club has made a 'concrete approach' to Palace yet, but the good news for Arsenal is that Eze's preference is reportedly to join the Emirates should he leave Selhurst Park this summer. The Gunners are also working on a proposal that would see them pay the release clause in three £20m instalments, which would negate the need to make a major sale. More Trending It remains to be seen how Eze would fit in Arteta's team given his best position is in attacking midfield which is currently occupied by Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard. He can be deployed on the left-flank but would face competition from Gabriel Martinelli and Madueke, should he complete the transfer. If he were to move to Anfield, his first match in red could see take on his former club with Liverpool facing Palace in the Community Shield on August 10. Horse racing tips: ‘He looks sure to score at his beloved track' – Templegate's NAP unstoppable on Tuesday

TEMPLEGATE tackles Tuesday's action confident of building the bank for the Newmarket July Festival. Back a horse by clicking their odds below. TIME PATROL (7.12 Brighton, nap) He can notch up yet another win at his beloved Brighton. Tony Carroll's five-year-old has landed three victories from four visits to the seaside and came home quickly when just denied here last time. The handicapper has left his mark alone and he takes a drop in class which can get him back to winning ways. He gets on well with today's rider Jack Doughty and decent ground is ideal. CRYSTAL MER (8.30 Uttoxeter, nb) He looked a cut above when bolting up over course and distance last month and can strike again under champion jockey Sean Bowen. The six-year-old powered clear with loads in hand that day and still looks well treated for Hughie Morrison who rarely misses when targeting these races. That was his debut for the yard and there's a lot more to come. SHADY BAY (7.42 Brighton, treble) She caught the eye with a five-length win at Nottingham last time out. She showed a blistering turn of pace there and clearly enjoyed dropping to this distance. She is back out quickly under a 5lb penalty and has a big chance of following up under Hollie Doyle. COMMAND THE STARS (4.25 Lingfield, Lucky 15) He showed bundles of promise on debut and then absolutely bolted up at Beverley, pulling four lengths clear despite still running green. That performance marked him out as well above average and this step up to 7f is sure to suit given his stout Sea The Stars pedigree.
