At least two dead and three wounded in shooting at Nevada casino, police say
The gunman who opened fire just outside the Grand Sierra Resort casino shot multiple people before being taken into custody, police said.
"Officers immediately located the suspect at which time an officer involved shooting occurred," police said in a statement.
"The suspect was taken into custody and transported to a local area hospital. The suspect's condition is unknown at this time. There is no known continuing threat to the public."
The conditions of the victims were not immediately known either, said Reno police spokesperson Chris Johnson.
Caroline Ackerman, a spokesperson for Renown Regional Medical Centre, said the hospital's emergency department received several patients with gunshot wounds.
The shooting was reported around 7:30 am Monday outside in the valet area, Johnson said.
More than a year ago, two men were charged with fatally shooting another man who was staying at the resort in January 2024.
Reno police warned residents to stay out of the area. Multiple emergency vehicles, including several ambulances, responded outside the casino.
The Grand Sierra claims to have the biggest casino floor in northern Nevada and sits just a few blocks from the Reno-Tahoe International Airport.
It's also one of the tallest buildings in the city, with nearly 2,000 hotel rooms.
Last year, President Donald Trump held a campaign rally in the resort's main ballroom.
"My heart breaks for the victims, their families, and our entire community. Reno is strong — but we are not immune to the epidemic of gun violence gripping this nation," city council member Devon Reese said in a social media post.

Police investigating Simi Valley assault involving juveniles, racial slurs
The Simi Valley Police Department is investigating after an alleged assault took place outside of a movie theater Friday night. In a news release, the department said officers responded to reports of an assault at 2751 Tapo Canyon Road, the Civic Center Plaza, at about 11 p.m. The victim of the alleged assault was no longer at the scene; however, at around 12:45 p.m., the department received a call from him and his mother, and officers responded to their home. The SVPD did not release additional details on the alleged assault, but said videos of the incident have proliferated online and will be included in the criminal investigation. Several racial slurs were said during the incident, SVPD confirmed. The department also said one of the juveniles believed to be involved is a relative of an SVPD officer. That officer will not be involved in the investigation, the department said. "That relationship has no bearing on this investigation," the news release reads. "A thorough and unbiased investigation will be conducted." No additional details were immediately made available.

Fair Oaks man suspected in deadly West Sacramento hit-and-run that killed 2
A Fair Oaks man was arrested in connection with a deadly hit-and-run in West Sacramento that left two people dead, West Sacramento Police said on Sunday. The hit-and-run happened on Saturday night on Jefferson Boulevard. Police said two female victims were found at the scene, and that it was determined that a hit-and-run had taken place. In coordination with Vacaville Police, officers found and arrested a suspect. West Sacramento Police identified the suspect as 71-year-old David Alison Walker, of Fair Oaks. The Yolo County Coroner's Office will identify the victims. West Sacramento Mayor Martha Guerrero issued a statement following the deadly incident. "Thank you to the West Sacramento Police Department for your swift and dedicated work in apprehending the suspect involved in yesterday's tragic accident that took two precious lives from our community.I also thank our West Sacramento Fire Department Firefighters who were on the scene handling this horrific heart goes out to the families and loved ones who are grieving this unimaginable loss. Please know that the entire West Sacramento community stands with you during this painful time," Guerrero said.
