Another crash on Monufiya ring road kills 10, Sisi orders govt to ‘study' road closure

A crash on the Regional Ring Road in Monufiya killed 10 people on Saturday, marking the second incident of its kind in under 10 days.
The traffic collision has driven another wave of public anger over the government's management of road maintenance and development works.
The victims, most of whom were from the Ashmon area of Monufiya and heading to Sadat City, were killed after two microbuses collided near the Manshiyet al-Qanater area in Giza Governorate.
The part of the road passing through the governorate was the site of another deadly collision on June 27 that killed 19 people, including minors.
According to initial media reports, Saturday's crash occurred when two microbuses collided after one driver lost control of his vehicle at high speed in the absence of road signs and traffic control.
Nine of the victims were killed immediately, while 11 others were injured and transferred to Bagour General Hospital, according to the Health Ministry. One of the injured died on Sunday.
In response, President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi ordered the government to consider 'taking the necessary measures to close the road in areas undergoing renovation and maintenance work,' and develop safe alternatives. He also instructed the Interior Ministry to intensify law enforcement against traffic violations.
A Cabinet statement later announced LE300,000 in compensation per victim's family from the labor and social solidarity ministries.
Labor Minister Mohamed Gobran directed the Central Administration for Irregular Employment Affairs and the Monufiya Labor Directorate to investigate whether the victims are eligible to receive compensation offered to irregular workers.
Among those decrying the lack of official action to ensure the road's safety was Egyptian Social Democratic Party MP Freddy al-Bayady, who spoke out against the 'constant and frivolous bleeding out of Egyptian lives.'
In a request published in domestic news outlets for the transport and interior ministers to appear before the House of Representatives for questioning, Bayady asked, 'When will the road be closed?' and pressed for the resignation of responsible officials. 'Are you waiting for the road to become an open grave?'
Last week's incident on the same road prompted heavy criticism in the media, civil society and the House, with calls for Transport Minister Kamel al-Wazir to resign and condemnation of the neglect of major highway projects constructed during his long tenure.
Wazir lashed out at critics, rejecting any comments against himself or his ministry's performance, and placed the blame entirely on one of the drivers implicated in last week's crash.
Critics also decried the government's initial half-hearted response to the incident at the time, as well as the absence of labor regulations to protect workers and provide them with safe transportation.

Egypt's PM Urges BRICS Nations to Focus on Common Interests, Collective Action to Address Challenges

Taarek Refaat In a key speech delivered on the sidelines of the 17th BRICS Summit, Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly emphasized the need for stronger international cooperation to confront pressing global challenges. Speaking on behalf of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Madbouly participated in the 'Peace, Security, and Global Governance Reform' session, underlining the importance of multilateralism, sustainable development, and peacebuilding. The working luncheon, hosted by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, served as a platform for discussing vital issues surrounding global security, peace, and governance reform. Prime Minister Madbouly began by thanking President da Silva for the opportunity to engage in these critical conversations, particularly in light of the increasingly complex geopolitical climate. Addressing Crisis and Multilateralism Madbouly outlined the intertwining crises facing the world today, with a particular focus on the humanitarian situation in Gaza, which has been exacerbated by ongoing Israeli military actions. He also highlighted the broader impact of these hostilities, which have extended to neighboring regions, including Lebanon, Syria, and Iran. He underscored that these developments reinforce the urgency of strengthening multilateral cooperation, supporting international law, and reinforcing the role of the United Nations in promoting peace and security. 'The catastrophic humanitarian situation we witness today, especially in Gaza, is a stark reminder of why multilateralism and respect for international law are more crucial than ever,' said Madbouly. 'It is our collective responsibility to ensure that the principles enshrined in the UN Charter guide the future of global governance.' Egypt's Role in Promoting Regional Peace The Prime Minister also took the opportunity to emphasize Egypt's longstanding commitment to regional and global peace efforts. He highlighted Egypt's strategic role in conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and post-conflict reconstruction across Africa and the Middle East. In particular, he pointed to Egypt's leadership in addressing regional challenges through diplomatic mediation and capacity building. 'Since 2019, President El-Sisi has served as the African Union Champion for Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development. This reflects Egypt's deep engagement in promoting peace and stability on the African continent,' Madbouly remarked. 'We have developed extensive experience in mediation, dialogue, and reconciliation processes.' Madbouly also referenced the Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping, and Peacebuilding, which has been instrumental in resolving violent conflicts since its founding in 1994. The center's work focuses on mediation, negotiation, and supporting national reconciliation efforts, alongside enhancing local communities' capacity to address emerging security threats. In addition to Egypt's role in regional peacekeeping, Madbouly highlighted the importance of sustainable development as a cornerstone for conflict prevention. 'We must address the root causes of conflict, particularly poverty, and ensure that sustainable development is a key focus,' he stated. He also outlined Egypt's launch of the Aswan Forum for Peace and Sustainable Development in 2019, which provides an important platform for discussing the interconnectedness between peace and development. The forum encourages African-led solutions to peace and security challenges, with the next session scheduled for October 2025 in Aswan. In his concluding remarks, Prime Minister Madbouly emphasized the importance of collaboration between BRICS nations and beyond, urging that 'we must strengthen our cooperation, focus on common interests, and work together to overcome the current challenges and fulfill the aspirations of our peoples.' With global instability on the rise and the urgency for peace-building ever more apparent, Madbouly's call for multilateralism and collective action serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts of Egypt to shape a more peaceful and sustainable global order. His message resonates not only within the BRICS framework but also among the broader international community committed to peace and justice. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream Technology 50-Year Soviet Spacecraft 'Kosmos 482' Crashes into Indian Ocean
