Apple and Google face more UK antitrust scrutiny over mobile ecosystems

Time of India3 days ago
LONDON: Britain's competition regulator said it plans to designate
Apple
and
Google
with so-called
strategic market status
for their role in
mobile ecosystems
, as it steps up scrutiny of what it has described as their duopoly.
The plans announced on Wednesday follows findings by an inquiry group at Britain's
Competition and Markets Authority
(CMA) that a number of markets relating to mobile internet browsers were not working well for consumers or businesses.
Apple's
Safari
and Google's
Chrome
dominate the mobile browser market on iPhones and Android devices, respectively.
A strategic market status (SMS) designation allows the CMA to impose interventions on a firm, such as requiring it to adhere to specific behaviour so as not to undermine fair competition.
In Apple and Google's cases, they could be forced to offer more features and give users the option actively to choose their preferred mobile browser, if recommendations from the CMA's inquiry group are accepted.
Both Apple and Google pushed back against the CMA's proposals, with Google calling the step "disappointing and unwarranted."
"It is ... crucial that any new regulation is evidence-based, proportionate and does not become a roadblock to growth in the UK," Google's senior director for competition, Oliver Bethell, said.
Apple said separately it was concerned that the new rules being considered would undermine the privacy and security protections expected by its users.

WhatsApp may soon let you import your profile photo from Instagram or Facebook: Here's how

Meta is bringing another feature to WhatsApp that will bring its suite of social media apps a little closer. As per a new report by WABetainfo, WhatsApp will soon have an option to import their profile picture from Instagram or Facebok. The new update was spotted by the publication in the WhatsApp beta for Android version up to 2.25.21.23. The feature has reportedly already been rolled out to some beta testers while more users are expected to get the update in the coming weeks. The feature seems fairly simple where users go their profile settings, click on edit to change their profile picture and see two new options of Instagram and Facebook. Currently, WhatsApp allows users to change their profile picture by either capturing a new one directly from the app, choosing it from gallery, selecting an avatar or generating an AI image but with the new feature they will also get the option to use their Instagram or Facebook profile picture as the display picture on the personal messaging app. WhatsApp new feature Theoretically, this should streamline the process for some users who may have lost access to a picture that has been set as their display picture on Facebook on Instagram and instead of taking screenshots and reducing the picture quality, they can just sync the picture across their Meta profiles. As one would imagine using this feature requires a person to first sync their WhatsApp account, Instagram account and Facebook account in the Meta accounts center, if they haven't done so already. Notably, Meta had started providing the option to add WhatsApp to Meta accounts center earlier this year and since then there have been a number of features to create a more integrated experience for users. For instance, users can now share their Instagram status directly on their WhatsApp and vice versa while Business users can add a WhatsApp contact button to their Insta profile, directing potential customers to their WhatsApp number directly.

Alphabet sees increase in net profit, says recently launched AI Mode on Google 'going well' in India

The company's revenue grew 14 per cent year-over-year to $96.4 billion, largely fueled by strong Google Cloud sales. The cloud division proved to be a major driver of growth, with revenue increasing 32 per cent from the previous year to $13.62 billion read more Google's parent company, Alphabet, recorded a 19 per cent year-on-year growth in its net profit in the April-June quarter, worth $28.2 billion. The increase in the tech giant's profit is attributable to the launch of Alphabet's AI model, which has been 'going well'. Alphabet's performance in the previous quarter was driven by the expansion of its cloud computing division and the positive impact of its AI products. 'We had a standout quarter, with robust growth across the company. We are leading at the frontier of AI and shipping at an incredible pace. AI is positively impacting every part of the business, driving strong momentum,' CEO Sundar Pichai said. Cloud platform and AI emerge as stars of the show Alphabet has been witnessing a boom, and the credit goes to the high demand for Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and an expansion of its core products like AI infrastructure and generative AI solutions. To keep up with rising demand for its cloud products and AI-driven services, Alphabet has raised its capital expenditure forecast for 2025. The company now plans to invest around $85 billion this year, up from its earlier estimate of $75 billion. Anat Ashkenazi, chief financial officer (CFO) of Alphabet, said, 'Our updated outlook reflects additional investment in servers, the timing of delivery of servers, and an acceleration in the pace of data centre construction, primarily to meet cloud customer demand.' The company's end-to-end AI search experience on Google, AI Mode, has been launched in the US and India, and 'has received positive feedback'. AI Overview on Google now has over 2 billion monthly users in more than 200 countries. Still, some analysts warned that the higher spending may draw fresh scrutiny from investors, who have largely stayed on the sidelines this year. Alphabet shares are up just 0.5 per cent in 2025, trailing Microsoft's 20 per cent increase and a 22 per cent rise in Meta stock, also held back by regulatory battles that are looking to break its illegal monopoly in the search and ad-tech markets.
