Bhubaneswar: Preparations for Rath Yatra at Sailashree Vihar in Bhubaneswar have entered the final stage as organisers are leaving no stone unturned to complete all arrangements in time.
The celebrations, deeply rooted in tradition and spirituality, are set to draw thousands of devotees from the neighbourhood, all eager to participate with fervour and devotion. Rath Yatra at Sailashree Vihar offers a more intimate setting, allowing locals to immerse themselves in the spiritual essence of the festival. The festival is unique in its inclusivity, with people of all ages, especially women, participating in large numbers.
The annual journey of deities to Sri Gundicha Temple, originally Maa Mangala Temple at Niladri Vihar, located about 1km away, is a significant event where Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra reside for nine days before returning to their sanctum sanctorum during Bahuda Yatra.
Local artisans have been diligently crafting the chariot, with final colouring and clothing being applied. The 40-ft high chariot becomes the focal point of the celebrations.

"The temple was set up and Rath Yatra began in 2003. There is always a different feeling when the holy trinity comes out of the temple to bless the devotees. We are completing all preparations on time," said Hemant Mohapatra, managing trustee of Sri Jagannath Bhakti Trust.
The trust, which manages the day-to-day affairs of the temple as well as Rath Yatra, is keeping a special focus on security during the festival. Like 2024, the trust plans to deploy additional volunteers for the inner and outer cordon of the chariot during Rath Yatra.
As the chariot is pulled, the air resonates with the sounds of bhajans, drums and conch shells, creating an atmosphere of divine celebration. Beyond the procession, the temple trust plans to organise cultural programmes, prasad distribution and spiritual discourses.
Organisers said these side events are set to enrich the festival's experience. Residents are actively engaged in organising, decorating and managing the event, showcasing a vibrant display of devotion and community spirit.
Priests of the temple are performing the rituals while the deities remain in Anasara Gruha. The priests are providing medicines to cure the deities ahead of their annual sojourn.
"Rath Yatra in our locality is more than a festival. The festival brings people together, transcending age and background, in a shared celebration of devotion and spirituality. We are successfully holding the festival with the blessings of the Lord," Gopal Pattnaik, secretary of the trust, said.

Digha looks at Ulta Rath rush, festive mood lingers

1 2 Digha: A day after Rath Yatra, the festive fervour continues in Digha as the seaside town is now gearing up to host Ulta Rath or the return journey of the deities from the 'Masir Bari' or the old Jagannath temple. On July 5 — the Ulta Rath day — hotels are hoping for fresh tourist influx. Though the deities are currently in Masir Bari, a large queue of devotees visited the newly-constructed Jagannath temple on Saturday. They offered prayers to the stone idol permanently installed there. Bipradash Chakraborty, joint secretary of Digha Sankarpur Hoteliers Association, said booking for Ulta Rath had already started. "The hotels and guest houses near the temple are in high demand. We expect that about 70% odd bookings will be completed by Wednesday. Usually, summer and winter vacations are the peak seasons for the hotel industry in Digha. This year, Ratha Yatra has become a new boost for our industry, and we are preparing for an influx of devotees from different states during Ulta Rath." Radharaman Das, a trustee of Digha Jagannath Dham and vice-president of ISKCON Kolkata, said 'Chappanbhog' was being offered to the deities five times daily at the temple. "Additionally, regular rituals are being performed at Masir Bari around 750 metres from the main temple, where the wooden idols have been kept in chariots. We expect footfall of 70,000 to one lakh devotees at the temple daily until Ulta Rath." A local tour operator in Digha stated, "We have been running package tours covering Puri and Digha for a long time. This tour has gained momentum due to the chariot festival, as many people will travel to Digha from Puri for Ulta Rath." Sonia Das, a Garia resident, stated, "The maiden chariot festival of Digha has generated great excitement among people like us. Some of us formed a group in the neighbourhood and travelled to the seaside town. Another group of our neighbours is scheduled to arrive at Digha for Ulta Rath." Meanwhile, police are implementing a three-tier security system in the town keeping in mind the anticipated rush of devotees. Dibakar Das, SDPO of Contai, stated, "Additional security measures are being implemented throughout Digha for the return journey. Focus is also on the beach area." Some devotees have also planned to visit Puri on Ulta Rath.

MTC buses run on paper, not on Tambaram roads

Chennai: At 7pm every day, Tambaram West MTC stop is packed with commuters, most of them waiting for 55 series buses to areas such as Mannivakkam, Mudichur, and Vandalur. "I wait nearly 45 minutes every day for a bus to Mudichur. When it finally comes, it is packed to the brim," says Joy Praveena J, an accountant. Sasikala J, a shop keeper in Tambaram, waits patiently in the evenings because she has time. "But in the mornings, I just take a share auto and spend 40 more because the bus never comes when I need it," MTC officials claimed 12 buses are operated from 7pm-8pm daily, but commiters said this is not true. "I've seen a maximum of five, with just one going to Mudichur. Usually, it's just 2-3 overall," said Venkatesh of Pallikaranai. MTC managing director Prabhushankar attributed such mismatches to flaws in the Automatic Vehicle Location System (AVLS) to monitor and reschedule services. "Sometimes the issue is also with local indiscipline. MTC now deploys 41 mobile checking squads and plans 1,500 new buses by Dec next year. Road work and metro construction have increased travel time per trip. Drivers may not be able to complete scheduled rounds, said V Rama Rao of Traffic and Transportation Forum, an NGO. MTC says it hired 700 new drivers and 625 conductors on contract and that overall services were up. In June, 43 new services were added at Madhavaram depot, and 9 each in Tambaram and Kilambakkam. It also said the combined daily trip capacity across Madhavaram, Kilambakkam, Tambaram, and Poonamallee depots is 6,892, but only 5,925 trips are currently being run. The near 1,000-trip gap raises questions about service consistency across suburbs.
