No fee hike in Telangana engineering colleges for now: Counselling to begin under existing structure; govt to set up panel for fresh review
HYDERABAD: There will be no immediate increase in engineering colleges' fee in the state. The first phase of counselling, starting Saturday for admission to BE/B Tech courses, will proceed as per the existing fee structure. Chief minister A Revanth Reddy on Friday decided to set up a high-level official committee to fix parameters for fee hike. A separate GO constituting the committee and terms of reference, including the time frame to submit its report, is expected to be issued within a week. The revised fee for engineering colleges was scheduled to come into effect from the current academic year. But, for now, students have to pay the fee fixed by the Telangana Admissions and Fee Regulatory Committee (TAFRC) for 2022-23 academic year. A senior official said the CM is of the view that every aspect of colleges such as teaching standards, labs, buildings, etc., should be examined thoroughly, making it the basis for determining fees. The official cited the cases of Islamic Academy of Education vs Karnataka and PA Inamdar and Others vs Maharashtra regarding determination of fees, where Supreme Court held that facilities, labs, salaries, future plans of the college, and decisions taken to increase standards of the college should be taken into consideration. The govt also intends go through the earlier report submitted by the vigilance and enforcement department after inspection of colleges during the previous BRS govt. While welcoming the govt's decision, the Students' Protection Forum urged for stricter oversight to safeguard the interests of students and faculty. In a letter addressed to the CM, they raised concerns over irregularities in engineering colleges affiliated to JNTU-Hyderabad and autonomous institutions. The Forum alleged that many colleges submitted manipulated data in their Fact-Finding Committee (FFC) reports, particularly on infrastructure and faculty. It called for re-inspection of colleges, public disclosure of FFC reports from the last three academic years. They also highlighted exploitation of faculty, claiming that some colleges credited salaries temporarily for compliance and then forced them to return the amount.

Man booked for rape after marrying and abandoning woman post her divorce
Surat: Dindoli police have booked a man for rape after he allegedly assaulted and later abandoned a 28-year-old woman he had married just a month earlier on May 15. The woman, who had divorced her first husband, filed a complaint after the accused disappeared from Surat. According to the police, the victim and the accused, came in contact through social media in 2023. Over the next two years, they developed a relationship, during which the accused proposed marriage and promised to relocate with her to Delhi after securing a job. The woman had been married since 2010 and has two daughters. Due to marital discord, she had started living separately, while her daughters remained with her husband. Following her growing closeness with the accused, she obtained a divorce from her first husband. In June 2024, the accused allegedly took the woman to a hotel in Pal and raped her, assuring her of marriage. However, when she brought up the subject of marriage, he continued to delay it, citing various reasons including the pending marriage of his elder brother. The celebrations, deeply rooted in tradition and spirituality, are set to draw thousands of devotees from the neighbourhood, all eager to participate with fervour and devotion. Priests of the temple are performing the rituals while the deities remain in Anasara Gruha. The priests are providing medicines to cure the deities ahead of their annual sojourn. "Rath Yatra in our locality is more than a festival. The festival brings people together, transcending age and background, in a shared celebration of devotion and spirituality. We are successfully holding the festival with the blessings of the Lord," Gopal Pattnaik, secretary of the trust, said.

Ponda gold theft case: Anticipatory bail to duo denied
Panaji: A North Goa court has rejected the anticipatory bail plea of a 19-year-old and his father, who are accused of purchasing stolen gold from a minor in connection with a theft case that occurred in Ponda in Jan. The court said there was direct material implicating them as receivers of the stolen property and directed them to cooperate with the investigation of Ponda police. 'Merely reporting to the police station without disclosing the whereabouts of the stolen gold will not suffice,' the court held. The 19-year-old student seeking anticipatory bail told the court that he just passed Class XII and is in the process of pursuing further studies. He argued that if arrested, it would cast a stigma on his career, ruin his prospects, and tarnish his image. He said that he was reporting to the police station when called; however, the police alleged that he was not revealing what he had done with the stolen gold.
