Are Labubus possessed? Pop Mart responds after viral demonic conspiracy theories about Pazuzu connection spark mass panic

Time of India2 days ago
If you have not seen a Labubu hanging off any saddle bag, are you even online? These chaotic-cute fuzzy toys with bunny ears, jagged teeth, and undeniable goblin energy have taken over the internet, and real life. What started as a charming character in Kasing Lung's 2015 children's book The Monster Trilogy, inspired by Nordic folklore, is now a billion-dollar empire thanks to a Pop Mart partnership. And yes, they are canonically female.
The rise of the Labubu obsession
With celebrities like Rihanna, BLACKPINK's Lisa, and Dua Lipa flaunting them, Labubus have gone from niche vinyl figures to full-blown cultural icons. Pop Mart even raked in $1.81 billion in total revenue last year, and $410 million of that came from these bucktoothed cuties alone.
But of course, what is virality without a side of chaos?
Are Labubus possessed? The conspiracy theories begin
Things took a sinister turn when Reddit threads and TikTok videos began to suggest the toys were... demonic. Some users called them 'creepy,' others outright claimed they radiate evil energy. One TikToker swore their life unravelled after buying one second-hand, from health scares to a near-death car crash — all of which allegedly stopped the moment the toy was binned.
Naturally, chaos ensued. And just when it could not get weirder, Pop Mart leaned into the madness.
Pop Mart's 'possession' statement goes viral
On April Fools' Day, Pop Mart posted a mock 'recall notice' for Labubu toys due to 'suspicious supernatural activity.' They obviously meant it as a joke, but it only poured more fuel on the already infernal fire.
Internet detectives took screenshots, others debated whether it was marketing genius or a haunted soft launch. Some are still side-eyeing their Bubus just in case.
LABUBU's: Cursed or collectible?
Whether you believe the demonic hype or just think Labubus are ugly-cute collector's gold, one thing is clear: the Bubu army is unstoppable. Maybe they are cursed, maybe they are not, but if the devil wears Prada, perhaps he also carries a Labubu.

Dhurandhar first look: Ranveer Singh and Sara Arjun's 20-year age gap sparks debate, netizens say ‘It's giving dad-daughter vibes'

Fans received a birthday treat on Ranveer Singh 's 40th birthday as the much-anticipated first look video of his upcoming action-thriller Dhurandhar dropped online. The stylish first look not only revealed the film's December 5, 2025 release date but also introduced the leading lady, 20-year-old Tamil actor Sara Arjun , opposite Ranveer . While the video generated buzz for its slick visuals and high-stakes spy-action narrative, it also triggered a wave of online discussion over the 20-year age gap between the lead actors. Social media reacts: It's giving dad-daughter vibes' Though the first look revealed little about the plot or the characters' dynamics, many users quickly voiced concern over the possibility of a romantic pairing between Ranveer and Sara. 'Sara Arjun was 18 when Dhurandhar was being filmed,' a Reddit user on the BollyBlindsNGossip subreddit noted, sharing a screenshot from the teaser. Another comment read, 'It's giving me an ick... even though she's 18 she looks like she's in mid-teen years... it's giving dad-daughter vibes and no chemistry!!' A user added, 'I hope they're not paired opposite each other romantically... otherwise, ugh!' While another remarked, 'I hope it's part of some mission. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Comment se préparer à l'avenir de l'investissement eToro Market Updates Lire la suite Undo Again, I won't be surprised if they are romancing. Others urge patience: 'Don't judge until the film is out' However, several users also came to the film's defense, urging others not to jump to conclusions. 'The casting looks intentional. Unless you watch it, there is no way to confirm if this is a romantic pairing. Maybe stop imaginary run-ups on theories and bash a movie that has a lot of hard work put into it,' one Redditor wrote. Another echoed the sentiment, 'Let us at least wait for the movie to release. If it doesn't fit into the story, then let's criticise.' Movie promotions, fan theories and communities now have a new home: Reddit

Along with tried and tested models of engagement on Instagram, X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook, besides regular media interactions, print and television advertising, movie promotions, and marketing are now finding a new home in news aggregation and social media forum Reddit. Besides official marketing by studios and producers, the platform also hosts movie reviews, fan activity and audience reactions by movie buffs, digital creators and influencers who are slowly building communities with like-minded entertainment enthusiasts. However, industry experts point out that, unlike other platforms that prioritise algorithms or follower counts, every post and comment on Reddit that speaks to hyper-targeted communities is subject to upvotes or downvotes from real users—meaning content must earn its place at the top. While the service does offer brands the opportunity to promote their presence on Reddit, including AMAs (ask me anything), through paid efforts, the smart way is to work with community moderators or run promoted posts that blend in, in order to feel native. Some brands do this well while others get called out. Read more: 'Trash TV' takes off as audiences crave a peek into celebrity lives 'Reddit stands apart in the entertainment and pop culture landscape by fostering authentic human conversations. It enables open, in-depth dialogue across over 100,000 active communities. Many of these communities are deeply immersed in films, OTT content, web series, celebrity culture, and digital storytelling," the platform said in response to Mint's queries. Entertainment is a key driver of engagement on Reddit, and one of the top topics on the platform in India so far this year, it added. Communities such as those on movies, television, Bollywood, and Tollywood have become hubs for trendspotting, fan theories, detailed reviews, and real-time audience reactions that often influence broader conversations in the entertainment industry. Meaningful partnerships To be sure, Reddit has a local team focused on developing entertainment partnerships to offer enhanced community experiences to redditors. Through these partnerships, studios like Zee Studios have brought key talent to Reddit to do AMAs ('Ask Me Anything" sessions, which are online Q&As) about their projects in Indian communities. However, the platform is designed more to foster unfiltered conversations and build communities dedicated to specific interests, ranging from niche genres to new releases. 'We're seeing more film and OTT teams tap into Reddit not just to market, but to listen. AMAs with actors, dropping clues for fans to uncover, even just letting fan theories grow on their own, it's all part of how shows build hype now," said Jagdish Lobo – associate vice-president at QYUKI, a new media company that provides digital distribution and content production services for artists. Global hits like Stranger Things and The Boys have done this brilliantly. 'Even if the studio isn't directly involved, the fan communities do half the job. In India, we're still early in this space, but it's picking up," Lobo added. Entertainment industry experts point out unlike other platforms, Reddit isn't about the most polished video or the biggest follower count. It rewards the most interesting conversation. That's a huge advantage for storytellers. They can test ideas, sense how people feel about characters or twists, and get real feedback, not just likes. 'Reddit is where the internet goes to think out loud. Studios have clocked this and are quietly slipping into subreddits to seed conversations, float theories, leak just enough to spark curiosity—and then let Reddit do what it does best: spiral. Very rarely does this happen through official handles. Most of it unfolds through burner accounts, soft alliances with community moderators, or well-timed posts that feel fan-driven," said Krunal Kanabar, head-strategy and IP, NOFILTR Group, an influencer marketing agency. Community engagement This has played out globally with titles like Everything Everywhere All At Once, and closer home with shows like Scam 1992, where Reddit didn't launch the hype but definitely helped cultify it, Kanabar said. To be sure, the company claims each subreddit operates under its own set of rules and is managed by independent volunteer moderators. These communities are highly engaged and self-regulating, and in many cases, users are quick to identify and question posts that appear to be speculative, agenda-driven, or lacking credibility. Read more: Regional content gains ground on OTTs even as Hindi dominates Yash Chandiramani, founder and chief strategist, Admatazz, a digital marketing agency, said, unlike traditional platforms, Reddit thrives on deep engagement, subculture awareness and long-form discussion. This means it has the users' attention. So any show or movie with a fan following, fan theories, and speculation works well on Reddit and movie marketers have started subtly seeding content as well. 'Reddit's strength lies in its super hyper-targeted, deep communities. Instead of shouting at a mass audience, for example, you can engage horror devotees or Bollywood enthusiasts. The threaded nature of discussions allows fans to dissect every plot twist, create theories, and contribute to shareable moments in real time, sustained engagement that's rarely seen on platforms with vanishing content or short-form formats," Joshua Carvalho, director BC Web Wise, a digital marketing agency, said. 'Reddit's pseudonymous culture encourages a kind of honesty we don't often see elsewhere. When creators show humility and speak candidly in AMAs or comment threads, they earn genuine community advocacy, not the glossy endorsements you'd expect from influencer marketing," Carvalho added.

From BTS J-Hope, Lee Min-ho, to SEVENTEEN: Celebs attend BLACKPINK's star-studded 'Deadline' concert

BLACKPINK, the global K-pop sensation, officially kicked off their highly anticipated world tour, Deadline, on July 4, in Goyang, Seoul, marking a powerful reunion of the quartet following their respective solo endeavours. After months of individual projects and solo releases, Lisa, Jennie, Rosé, and Jisoo have reunited on stage, much to the elation of fans worldwide. The second night of BLACKPINK's Goyang concert drew widespread attention not only for BLACKPINK's electrifying performance but also for the high-profile attendees who filled the audience. From top K-pop idols to leading Korean actors, the venue was brimming with star power. Among the most talked-about guests was BTS' J-Hope, whose entrance reportedly caused quite a stir. A concert-goer remarked, "Someone who attended BLACKPINK's concert today said that he thought there was an earthquake when J-Hope entered the area (sic)." Fans echoed the sentiment, expressing amazement at the crossover of major fandoms in one space. SEVENTEEN members Mingyu, The8, and Jeonghan also made an appearance, further fuelling excitement. One fan hilariously declared, "MINGYU 5TH BLACKPINK MEMBER get him on stage now (sic)," while another couldn't contain their shock: 'OH MY GOD???? JEONGHAN AND KENTARO AT THE BLACKPINK CONCERT???? (sic)' In addition to idol stars, the concert also welcomed renowned actors. Lee Min-ho, Jisoo's 'Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint' co-star and one of Korea's most celebrated actors, drew admiration from fans after sharing photos from the event. One fan posted, "Jisoo's master is here! #LeeMinHo went to BLACKPINK's concert & took photos to show appreciation (sic)." Another wrote warmly, 'Wow!!! Actor #LeeMinHo out here on his ig supporting #BLACKPINK_DEADLINE tour & being an amazing bestie to pretty #JISOO. Go girls, fighting (sic).' Lee Hyeri, actress and singer, was also spotted at the venue, along with a host of other celebrity attendees, leading fans to compare the concert's atmosphere to a major year-end music show. One viral reaction read: "Is it a BLACKPINK concert or SBS Gayo Daejeon 2018 cause wtf?? BTS TWICE SEVENTEEN WINNER GIDLE RED VELVET are attending the show (sic)." Fans were also thrilled by the performance itself, especially the live encore segment. After years of relying on backing tracks, the group gave a rare live encore performance, sparking excitement across social media: "BLACKPINK SINGING REALLY DURING ENCORE IT'S BEEN 6 YEARS (sic)." As always, Jisoo's close connections were highlighted, with a shoutout to her Snowdrop castmates in attendance: '#JISOO with her Snowdrop family at BLACKPINK Deadline World Tour Concert in Goyang Day 2 (sic).' What stood out to many was the show of unity among celebrities, transcending fandom rivalries. One fan wrote poignantly: "The way these artists always support their fellow artists, while the fans are busy fighting over unnecessary things. It just proves the beef is all in your heads (sic)." Indeed, BLACKPINK's Deadline concert did not merely serve as a musical spectacle, but also as a celebration of camaraderie and mutual respect within the South Korean entertainment industry. As one fan perfectly summed it up: 'BLACKPINK is literally insane for collecting both senior and junior groups. They are truly the celebrity of all celebrities (sic).' With such a dazzling start in Seoul, BLACKPINK's Deadline world tour promises to be an unforgettable journey, not just for BLINKs, but for the entire entertainment world watching closely.
