Bung to Armizan: Sabah BN won't wait for 'green light' from others
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Barisan Nasional (BN) is ready to face Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) in the upcoming state election, stressing that it does not rely on "green lights" from others to make political decisions.
Sabah BN chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin said the coalition welcomed healthy democratic competition and would only engage in political cooperation based on sincerity and mutual respect.
"We do not wait for signals from any party to determine our position or course of action.
"More importantly, this issue must be viewed in the broader context of political legitimacy, strategic autonomy, and sincerity in cooperation.
"BN is not against cooperation. But we do not want partnerships that merely serve to boost numbers or lend legitimacy to a fragile rule," said Bung, who is also the Sabah Umno liaison committee chairman, in a statement.
The Lamag assemblyman was responding to a statement by GRS deputy secretary-general Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, who said yesterday that the Sabah-based coalition should face BN in the coming state polls.
The domestic trade and cost of living minister had said that a contest between the two coalitions would allow the people to decide who they wanted to govern the state.
Bung added that if GRS was indeed ready to compete democratically, Sabah BN welcomed the challenge.
"In a democracy, contests are not to be feared.
"They present opportunities to determine who truly has the people's trust, based on real strength, not borrowed support or shortcuts."
He stressed that Sabah BN would not shape its political direction based on the statements of others, and that past experience had made the coalition wary of entering political alliances lightly.
"Cooperation without sincerity is like building a house on mud. It may stand briefly but will collapse under pressure. We have learned our lesson.
"The people have also witnessed how alliances without sincerity result in weak, inconsistent, and unconvincing governments.
"In politics, legitimacy is not defined by seat numbers alone, but by the people's trust in the sincerity of one's struggle."

Defence minister: Govt will continue to enhance defence in Sabah
KUALA LUMPUR, June 30 — Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the government will continue to strengthen defence in Sabah even though the state is currently safe. He said in a statement posted on his Facebook page that serious attention is being given to addressing any form of threat in this territory, considering that the risk of threats is more pronounced due to its geographical position. At the same time, he also urged the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) veterans to continue to play their role as members of society in supporting the MAF to realise the 'Whole of Government, Whole of Society' approach. Meanwhile, he said that during a working visit to Tawau today he had the opportunity to officiate the Malaysia Service Medal Award Ceremony. 'On behalf of the nation, I express my gratitude to the MAF veterans for their bravery and sacrifices towards the security of the homeland. The peace we enjoy would not be felt without their contributions. 'As citizens, we need to appreciate their struggles and take the necessary advice for a better future for the country,' he said. He expressed his commitment to continue promoting the welfare agenda for the MAF veterans as a recognition of their services and contributions, and this can be seen as the annual allocation for veteran affairs has significantly increased each year. Mohamed Khaled also hoped that the struggles of the MAF veterans would continue to inspire the new generation to build a stronger Malaysia, becoming future warriors who are always ready to defend the homeland. — Bernama

Apas has among most PGRS members
Published on: Monday, June 30, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 30, 2025 By: Lagatah Toyos Text Size: Nizam (front, centre) with party delegates. TAWAU: The Apas state constituency has emerged as one of the largest divisions under the Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (PGRS), with more than 11,000 registered members, making it one of the 74 most populous divisions in the state. Apas PGRS Division Chief, Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan, said the division has so far successfully established 180 registered branches, with three more expected to be registered in the near future. What makes the figures more significant, he said, is that nearly 10,000 of these members are registered voters in the Apas constituency, giving the party a strategic advantage ahead of the upcoming state election. Nizam, who is also the Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, said the growing number of members reflects rising public interest in PGRS and growing trust in the leadership of Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor, who is both party president and Chief Minister. 'The Chief Minister is a visionary leader whose Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) development agenda has brought real progress and wellbeing to the people of this state. 'This is why people continue to place their confidence in his leadership as both Chief Minister and PGRS President. His clear and consistent direction has earned increasing support from the grassroots,' he said. Nizam, who is also the Apas assemblyman, was speaking to the media after officiating the PGRS Apas Annual Division Conference for the main body, Women's, Youth and Youth Women's wings, held at the Tawau Community Hall on Saturday, which drew nearly 3,000 delegates and observers. He said the large turnout at the event demonstrated the strong commitment of Apas PGRS members to ensure the seat remains with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) in the upcoming 17th State Election (17th GE). On preparations for PRN17, Nizam said he was satisfied with the level of readiness and commitment shown by the PGRS Apas Polling District Centre (PDM) committees. 'Thank God, Apas is ready. PDM operation rooms have been set up, and our party machinery has been activated. Grassroots engagement is ongoing to identify voters and ensure a strong turnout during the polls. 'I am very pleased with the commitment shown. Now we're simply waiting for the official announcement of 17th GE,' he said. As for the conference, Nizam said it would be the last before the next state election, as the current term is set to expire in November. He added that a large delegation from Apas will attend the PGRS Annual General Assembly scheduled to be held at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) in Kota Kinabalu from 25 to 27 July. Among those present at the conference were PGRS Treasurer-General Datuk Ghulam Haidar Khan Bahadar; Tawau MP Datuk Lo Su Fui; Balung assemblyman Datuk Hamild Awang; Kukusan assemblywoman Datuk Rina Jainal; and representatives from other GRS component parties. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Trump says ‘very wealthy' group to buy TikTok
WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump said Sunday a group of buyers had been found for TikTok, which faces a looming ban in the United States due to its China ties, adding he could name the purchasers in two weeks. 'We have a buyer for TikTok, by the way,' Trump said in an interview on Fox's Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo. 'Very wealthy people. It's a group of wealthy people,' the president said, without revealing more except to say he would make their identities known 'in about two weeks.' The president also said he would likely need 'China approval' for the sale, 'and I think President Xi (Jinping) will probably do it.' TikTok is owned by China-based internet company ByteDance. A federal law requiring TikTok's sale or ban on national security grounds was due to take effect the day before Trump's inauguration on January 20. But the Republican, whose 2024 election campaign relied heavily on social media and who has said he is fond of TikTok, put the ban on pause. In mid-June Trump extended a deadline for the popular video-sharing app by another 90 days to find a non-Chinese buyer or be banned in the United States. Tech experts quickly described the TikTok kerfuffle as a symbol of the heated US-China tech rivalry. While Trump had long supported a ban or divestment, he reversed his position and vowed to defend the platform -- which boasts almost two billion global users -- after coming to believe it helped him win young voters' support in the November election. 'I have a little warm spot in my heart for TikTok,' Trump told NBC News in early May. 'If it needs an extension, I would be willing to give it an extension.' Now after two extensions pushed the deadline to June 19, Trump has extended it for a third time. He said in May that a group of purchasers was ready to pay ByteDance 'a lot of money' for TikTok's US operations. The previous month he said China would have agreed to a deal on the sale of TikTok if it were not for a dispute over Trump's tariffs on Beijing. ByteDance has confirmed talks with the US government, saying key matters needed to be resolved and that any deal would be 'subject to approval under Chinese law.
